April 24. 1958 Quadruplets Born To Puerio Rican; Doctor Shocked New York OJ.P) A 96-pound Puerto Rican woman whose twins are only one year old gave birth Monday to quadruplets in a New York hospital. Officials at Flower-Fifth Ave nue Hospital said Mrs. Carmen Medina, 25, and three of the quads were "doing fine." The fourth, and smallest quad, was in "fair" condition. "I can't believe it," Ciprian Medina, gasped, Monday when told his wife had given birth to the quads, two boys and two girls. "We just expected one. I think I'd better earn more money. Dr. Leinard Hirsch, who had suspected Mrs. Medina was car rying twins, said he was sur prised when the third child was born and shocked when he saw there was to be a fourth. He thought for a time he was about to preside over the birtn of quin tuplets. When Hirsch informed Mrs. Medina that she had given birth to quads she sat bolt upright on the delivery table. The Medinas, who were mar ried in Puerto Rico in 1947, came to the United States six years ago. Medina recently had to quit a job as a luncheonette counter man to take a night job with a plastics company because doc tors told him he was too run down. The youngsters were placed immediately in an incubator. The girls weighed two pounds, seven ounces and three pounds. The boys weighed three pounds, three ounces and two pounds 15 ounces. The quads each are 15 inches long. ish Prisoners Being Rehabilitated London (U.R) Warsaw Radio announced last night that Po- j land's Communist regime al- j ready has begun to rehabilitate ! prisoners convicted in the Josef ! Stalin era. ! The broadcast quoted Josef Cyrankiewicz, chairman of the j Polish council of ministers, as saying "rehabilitation of people wrongly convicted already is under way." Cyrankiewicz told his parlia ment, the broadcast said, that "deep changes" in Poland began more than a year ago and have intensified since the 20th Com munist Party Congress in Mos cow in February. The first official indication that the anti-Stalin campaign had reached into Poland came last week with the announce ment that several top officials had been relieved of their posts. Then Sunday came the an nouncement that the govern ment planned the release and re duction of sentences for 70,000 more. Cyrankiewicz' statement was the first notice that this al ready was under way. Pelton Project, Builders Rapped Portland (U.R) The Pelton dam project in general and Port land General Electric Company In particular came under fire here last night at a meeting of the Save the Deschutes Commit tee. PGE is building the dam on the central Oregon stream. Rollin E. Bowles, chairman of the committee, challenged state officials to stop construction of the dam. He claimed the power firm went over the heads of Oregon authorities and refused to submit to a hearing before th State Water Resources Board Bowles said the people grant ed PGE its charter and "they can take it away." Erskine Wood, attorney, said the Supreme Court's opinion up holding a license granted by the Federal Power Commission was based on a five-year-old license and on the supposition that the project was solely on federal property. "The EPC permit makes the regulating dam a condition of the whole project. .That's where they intend to im pound the river and that part is on private property," he said. Tax Cuf Possibility Declared Ruled Out Washington (U.R) Repub lican congressional leaders said today after a White House con ference that present administra tion estimates of the govern ment's financial surplus appear to rule out any possibility of a tax cut this year. Hopes for a tax cut had risen in Congress last week when the ; staff of the Senate-House Eco- j nomic committee predicted that j the federal surplus for the cur- j rent 1956 fiscal year would run to about S2,000,000,000 instead cf the $200,000,000 forecast ear-1 tier by the administration.
