General Moshee Dayan, IsraeFs chief of staff; Israeli President Itshak Ben-Zvi; Premier David Ben-Gurion and Brigadier Crador, are in stand. (International) Quotes From the News By UNITED PRESS London Soviet Communist party boss Nikita Khrushchev on interncontinental guided missiles: "I am quite sure we will have very soon a guided missile with a hydrogen bomb warhead which could hit any point in the world." London Khrushcher on the H-bomb: "II remains fact that w were ihe first to explode an H-bomb from a plane. The Americans are only intending to do so because the previous explosion was not of an H-bomb but of an H-inilalla-lion." New York Secretary of State John Foster Dulles on expan sion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization into a political and economic force as well as a bulwark against Communism: "The historic weakness of the West has been its disunity. Out of this disunity came wars, which have taken the lifeblood of its finest youth and weakened its economies." New York Playwright Ben Heehi in his eulogy of playwright Charles MacArthur: "We were lavish fellows and we gave no damn for anything except our youth and how to keep it going in the teeth of bald spots and greying sideburns, and God forgive us, even paunches." Jerusalem Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett on the arms deal between Egypt and Communist Czechoslovakia: "This arms deal is in direct conflict with the Russians' pro fessed aim to persistently seek measures for the reduction of in ternational tensions." Barman Nichols Dr. Howard Mitchell, the conductor, is five feet, 11, slender, dark and hand some. The baton flipper has a lot of fans, and his fan mail comes in mountains. Or did. Most of the teen-agers wrote in to ask if he was married. He gave them an honest answer: "I have five kids." ;T; Dr. Mitchell started out as a cellist the head man on the cello row. He sawed away for 15 years. He hasn't forgotten the trick, either. If one of the boys in the cello section comes down with a sore digit, the maestro can still pitch away his stick, run into the pit, and pick up a bow and start whacking away. As Dr. Mitchell puts it: "There is nothing worse than a bandaged finger in an orches tra pit. Actually, he is a percussionist, the hammer man on the brass cymbals. Freddie Begun, a man who hits the kettle drum, has his own fan club. A bunch of young girls who think Freddie looked like Eddie Fisher, and he does, always sits on the side next to his spot on the stage. Made Nuisance of Self A couple of years ago, one fan took ' a fancy . to Helen Briesmiester, - a pretty blonde who is hot stuff oh the cello. He was a persistent fellow and kept writing and waiting outside the dessing room and otherwise making a nuisance of himself. Helen finally fixed his wagon for good. She married the cello player sitting next to her. She then sat down and wrote the guy a letter, giving him all the information he needed. Helen and her man still sit side by side in the cello section. The past went away. Mrs. Luce Warns Against Complacency Milan, Italy (U.R) U. S. Ambassador Clare Booth Luce thinks Italy's post war progress has been "astounding." But she warned both Italy and her own country against becom ing complacent in the face "of relative prosperity. Mrs. Luce spoke to the Amer ican Chamber of Commerce here last night. It was the third anniversary, of her arrival in Italy and "American Day" at the Milan industrial fair. "Italy's progress in the last 10 years is astounding, well nigh miraculous ..." Mrs. Luce said. "Barely a decade after seemingly hopeless chaos had engulfed this land, Italy is on the threshold of the most pros perous decade of her entire his tory." With crucial nationwide local elections only 34 days away, she sounded a noe of caution. "In times of prosperity, peo ple tend to go soft," she said. . . . A frustrating paradox of human affairs is that when things go well and when prob lems could be most easily solved. Ihey are not often solved the catastrophe, greater or less, strikes and men are forced to do in pain and confusion what they might have done in ease and in reason." NAT She's in bad company BRENDA A few years ago my husband's uncle was a candi date for office in our town and my husband was very eager to help him. As a result I became interested in political activity and the social side of politics. Now I am active in a political organization and get a great deal of satisfaction out of getting to know all kinds of people and sometimes being on the inside of public situations. My husband, however, finds fault with what I am doing and, although he urged me to get into this in the first place, now com plains tha,t it is unwomanly and vulgar for me to be in politics. I don't like to displease him, but 1 find the prospect of a com plete withdrawal difficult t o take. My whole social life has shifted and my sense of values has changed very much since I became interested in politics. I do not think that I could go back to nothing but housework with an afternoon bridge party every now and then.- What makes the situatoin all the more difficult for me to take is that it is pretty obvious that my hus band is motivated by jealousy, when I have given him no cause whatever. NAT My wife is being fussed over because she is a woman and a pretty one. If she knew some of these men as I know them she would understand my objections. It is true that I got her into this, but that is no excuse for getting in too deep. I wanted to help my uncle, and you can't run a political organization suc LJ1 When You See GEORGE LEWIS ROGUE TRAVEL SERVICE A FREE SERVICE We Reserve and Sell Airline and Steamship Tickets PHONE 2-6779 LOBBY HOTEL JACKSON On The Side (Distributed by King Features Syndicate. History Qulx , How would you do on a quiz program with United States his tory as your category? Can you answer following quick as a flash? Who said, "I'd rather be right than President?" And un der what circumstances?- Just in case the query baffles you, the answer is that it was Henry Clay. He made the statement when told his advocating of the Missouri Compromise of 1850 might injure his chances for the presidency. Asides What were you doing when you were 17? When Charles Laughton, the actor, was 17, he was an officer in the British Army and saw plenty of action at the front in World War I. . . . Blue eyes are not especially fas cinating in women. Council cessfully and get too choosy about the characters whose help you will accept. Some of the people my wife now associates with are pretty, crummy, and they play up to her because there are very few women' of her breeding and appearance who would as much as look at them, let alone allow them to visit her home and call them on the telephone. Of course, . I'm jealous. I haven't the time or the unearned money to carry on as extravagantly and as courtly as these bums do. - - THE COUNCIL B r e n d a should recognize that there is not a little justice in her hus band's complaint. It is very true that a pretty and smart woman would be quite outstanding . in any political circle; and it is also true that there are seamy char acters who manage to behave like gentlemen, thanks largely to the special privileges they enjoy as politicians. Brenda should tell herself truthfully whether her husband is abnormally jealous, . or just humanly jealous. The test is whether his jealousy is directed primarily against the political characters he dislikes or wheth er he imagines fantastic situa tions and makes wild charges. From what he says, we see no indication that he is extremely jealous and we think his wife should pay some heed to his point of view. She surely has a right to her political interest, but she would be wise to lift it to a higher plane than clubhouse politics. There are ample opportunities to join study groups and civic groups where politics is ' on a higher plane. (Copyright 1956, General Features Corp.) - By E. V.
