U.R) The Idaho-Oregon Hells Canyon as sociation has reactivated its tri Ftate organization in the Pa cific Northwest and pledged a continued fight for a high gov ernment dam in the Snake river canyon. Lynn Tuttle, Clarkston, was elected chairman of the tri-state group. Vice-chairmen are Elmer Mclntire, Boise, for Idaho; May nard Kendall, Clarkston, for "Washington and Al Ullman, Bak er, for Oregon. The keynote of the meeting was that chances for a high gov ernment dam were not dead de spite a Federal Power commis sion decision to let the Idaho Power company build three low dams in Hells canyon between Idaho and Oregon. Press Case The association heard that the case for a high government dam would be pressed in courts and on the floor of Congress. Wilfred Woods, publisher of the Wenatchee Daily World, told a banquet audience that work by Hells canyon supporters of both major political parties was need ed to get the project done. He said his father had fought for 25 years to see the Grand Coulee project brought to completion and warned the Hells canyon fight also could be a lengthy one. The association urged Baker county, Oregon, to press for a test of the Idaho Power com pany's right to build the Brown lee dam without a permit from the state of Oregon. (International Soundphoto) Airman May Survive Rare Heart Surgery Knoxville, Tenn. (U.R) Phy sicians voiced hope Saturday that a 19-year-old airman may become the first patient ever to withstand a rare operation to repair the ruptured inner walls of a heart. Although the airman, Clyde Mantooth, remained in critical condition at East Tennessee Bap tist hospital, he has been con scious and talking. Doctors said there had been no complications since the surgery two weeks ago and they said the patient "is ex pected to make a full recovery'-" Mantooth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Mantooth of Sewell, N.J., and formerly of Newport, Tenn., of Hells canyon on grounds such an arrangement would "require taxpayers to shoulder the bur den for the benefit of private gains." was injured in an automobile accident near Newport April 4 when another man was killed. The airman was admitted to3the hospital with a rupture of the inner-heart wall. Each beat of his heart pumped blood through the ruptured wall overcrowding the lungs, instead of sending the blood to other regions of the body. Doctors said 13 such previous cases have been recorded in the medical annals but all of the patients died within 30 minutes to a few days. However, the physicians said that septum holes found at birth have been repaired, they decid ed to attempt a repair in this case. They put the youth to sleep and chilled him in ice water to lower his metabolism so that his blood circulation would not be interrupted. Three Arrested in Armed Robbery Case Roseburg lU.R) Three young men were being held in Douglas county jail Saturday on armed robbery charges stemming from the holdup of the Airport Inn here early Friday. Sheriff Ira Byrd said Ray Oorentzen, 20, and LeRoy K. Taylor, 16, both of Roseburg, were arrested Friday night. They joined Charles Chote, 27. Roseburg, in the county jail. Chote was arrested earlier. Byrd said the three had ad mitted holding up the restaurant and taking S165. They were identified by George Dahl, man ager of the inn. Medical Society Switches Stand Portland (U.R) The Oregon State Medical Society yesterday reversed itself and approved the University of Oregon medical school's application for $57,000 in federal funds to help remodel the outpatient clinic at the school. The society asked a guarantee, however, that it be given assur ances in writing that none of the federal funds would be used to construct or remodel facil ities at the school for the private practice of medicine. The money would come from the Hill-Bur.ton act. Heads ASNE Washington (U.R) Editor Jenkin Lloyd Jones of the Tulsa Tribune became president Satur day of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. The operation' within the heart required nearly 10 min utes.
