Stanton, of Cornell University, recently re ported that about a third of the pregnancies in women of 44 years and old er terminate in sponta :i e o u s abortion. The incidence of pre -natal death of fetal abnormal ities is also v.aiUM Alvarez great, in lae older women. Among the 71,827 women studied, only 1 in 303 pregnancies occurred after 44. The incidence of abortion among all the older women was 33 per cent while among the entire group it was only 8.3 per cent. In women over 47 years of age it was about 80 per cent. No births of children (who lived) occurred after menstruation had ceased in women over 50 years of age. This means that although in rare cases a woman will con ceive after the menopause, her chances of then bearing the child are almost nil. In many cases in the older women, labor was markedly pro longed over 30 hours and in women over 44, Caesarean sec tion was performed in 10.7 per cent. Toxemia of pregnancy was three times as common in the older women, and it was severe and convulsive nine times as fre quently as it is in young women. Interestingly, 17 per cent of the older women who gave birth to an infant who lived, were hav ing their first ch;ld. A third of the pregnancies occurred 10 or more years after the birth of the previous child. Among the older women, the incidence of mongoloid idiots' and ofj infants with congenital anomalies in compatible with life was eight times that observed in women in their twenties. All of this shows that the woman who elects to have a child after she is 44 runs great risks, and her child, also, runs great risks. Animal Diseases Man Can Catch I am always much interested when I read of the common dis eases of animals and birds dis eases which cost our ranchers millions of dollars and some times almost wipe them out fi nancially. One reason why we physicians must keep interested in these diseases is that it is always possi ble that a few susceptible indi viduals can get some sort of a rare and puzzling infection from a sick animal. Because of these dangers to public health I am always lad to hear that the workers vith viruses have made a new vaccine which will combat some of these diseases. For instance; a new rabies vcine has just been pre pared for use with cattl. I had ho ide3 that rabies is so ccm-non in cattle. In New York State aione, last year there were 200 oases, and more than 1,000 cases wer-j reported from around the country. Doubtless many more were not recognized.
