The "friends of unfair design" are now looked upon as "really good friends who have no design of any kind' on this remote mountainous country of the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama's court pur chaser, Tse Chnawang Gyalchen, in Kathmandu on a routine visit laden down with presents for the King of Nepal from the Dalai Lama, gave the United Press an account of Tibetan life under the Communist Chinese. The Tensemba, as he is known, said that life in the capital, Lhas sa, is not so drab as is was at the beginning of the "liberation." "But," he said, "things are still expensive. The people have had to provide their best pro ducts to the Chinese army of 50,000, and the two main ar ticles, milk and ghee, are now beyond the reach of the ordinary Tibetan. "But," added the Tensemba, after the Dalai Lama's return from Peiping, "the outlook of the Tiebetan towards the Chinese changed." He continued: Polite Chinese "China has restored all ad ministrative powers to the Dalai Lama and he is now the all powerful ruler of the country. The Chinese do not inter fere with the monasteries, and the lamas in far-away monaster ies are satisfied with the Dalai Lama's present rule. Road Progresses "The panchan lama, spiritual head of Tibet, does not interfere with the country's administra tion and relations between both lamas are very good and very cordial." He said the Chinese have now started buying food for their troops in Tibet from either India or China, and food prices have come down except, of course, for milk and ghee (a sort of butter). STANLEY My wife, Vir ginia, constantly hounds me be cause I refuse to quarrel with my brother, with whom I am in partnership in a thriving retail business. My brother and I in herited this business from our father, and we earn enough to provide for our own families and support our widowed mother and to unmarried sisters. Virginia nags me all the time because I put in long hours at the store, and she is always com plaining that my brother lives like a gentleman and spends time with his family, while I am always at the store. She seems to think that I ought to have more income from the store and that I ought to have a greater share in it than my brother. We have always been brought up to work together and share alike, and I cannot think of breaking up with my brother or demanding more than he takes. As for the hours I put in, it so happens I like to wait on cus tomers and hate to do the book keeping and other phases of the work. When I suggest to my husband that he get his brother to share the night hours with him so he can spend some time home, he suggests I put in some time in the store. He simp ly has no regard for his family, and that is why I argue with him. THE COUNCIL: Virginia is putting the wrong foot forward. Her problem is not the relation ship between the brothers, but her own husband. He apparently does not have enough feeling for 'family or social life. It does not appear it is the brother who is at fault here, but Stanley evidently would be lost in the business if he did not have his brother to lean on for the "brain work." The solution of this complex problem calls for subtlety and charm, rather than constant nag ging and contention. The broth er might turn out to be an ally if he were made aware of the problem in an inoffensive way. We do not advise that she neglect her three children to help out at the store, but it might serve a useful purpose if she were to spend a little time there just enough to acquire a better understanding of her husband and his problems and weaknesses.
