Hospital Attendants Halt Column of Ants London (U.R) Attend nts at suburban Wembley hospital saw a column of ants heading for the hospital kitch en Tuesday and went into ac tion. It almost mined the hospital. They poured methylated pirils on the ants. The Tap ers caught fire from a gas beater. Firemen stationed next door were out and four other companies had to dash to the blaze. The fire was confined to the kitchen but it was badly dam aged. Not an ant surrived. The servicemen say Korean women make more patient, loyal and affectionate wives than the American girls. The statistics come from the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. This year's total is expect ed to be even higher, said Web ber Mason, U.S.' Vice Consul in Seoul. Thirty-nine American soldiers have taken their Korean brides to the American Embassy this year to receive visas, and anoth er 250 couples have visa appli cations on file. ' Sgt. Robert Curtiss, 31, of Hammond, Ind., explained why he married a Korean. "Korean girls," he said . . . are more patient and don't get upset as easily at American women." Curtiss met his 26 -year -old wife, Nan Suk, in Pusan two years ago when she was working as a waitress in a sergeants-officers mess hall. When the couple moved to Seoul, Nan Suk called Maygie by her husband rented a Korean-styled room near the Eighth U.S. Army headquarters. Sees No Problem Military regulations do not permit the sergeant, a military policeman, to live at the house, but he can visit his wife and their five - month - old daughter daily. The Curtiss family will leave for the U.S. in a few weeks. He is scheduled to be stationed at Fort Belvoir, Va. Curtiss feels that a Korean wife will be no problem in the Army. "They don't worry about seg regation," he said, "and lots of soldiers have wives from foreign countries." Pfc. Eugene Drier, 22, of Port ville, la., figures the same ap plies to living in a small mid west farming community. "My wife will get along fine with the folks back home," he said. "Some of my buddies brought back girls from France and Mexico." When they decided to marry, Ae Kyung, whose western name is Juanita, rented a small house close to Dreier's office at the Seoul military post fire depart ment. "She's learned to cook meat and potatoes," her GI husband said, "but since we don't have very good cooking facilities we eat lots of Chinese food. Approval Involved "For entertainment we usual ly go to the NCO (non-commissioned officers) club. Juanita likes to play shuffleboard. Or sometimes we go to the movies. She likes any show that has lots of shooting in it." The Dreiers also will be leav ing for home soon. Juanita's English is fair, and she wears her western dresses stylishly. Hyun Sook, wife of Pfc. Wil liam Malone, 22, of Wilkes Barre, Pa., still wears some of her Korean dresses. But her cooking skill in West ern food has reached the spaghetti-making stage. Malone and Susie, as he calls her, met about three years ago in the officers club in Pusan. He was a cook and she was a wait ress. After they were married, Ma lone was assigned as a cook in the U.S. 24th Infantry division on the truce front. Susie rented a small house in a nearby Ko rean village. Malone works every other day and visits his wife, and 10-month-old son in his spare time On his day off, he teaches his wife cooking and English and catches up on his reading. "She makes a wonderful housewife," he said, "and peo ple in my home think pretty highly of any girl that is good in that department." Every GI-Korean marriage requires from six months to a year of involved paper work for approval. But time is abundant in Korea and love apparently survives the red tape.
