Peddicord had, implicated his wife's sister, Mrs. Joyce Keller, in the bombing. Mrs. Keller's trial is set for next month. Mrs. Peddicord was lodged in jail Sunday and Monday nights but police said she was simply given quarters there because she had no other place to go. She was not a prisoner. She told officers that, friends were taking care of her children. Strangely Quiet; Peldicord, without funds and with no place to go, has once more attempted to confess to Portland police that she helped her husband, Clarence Peddicord,- detonate a bomb in the Meier & Frank department store here last year. It must be a month or more since Senate Re publican Leader William F. Knowland has hauled off in pub-: lie to slug the Eisenhower ad ministration, j Knowland was among the first and was the foremost Republican politician to challenge the idea that the party needed President Eisenhower to head the 1956 ticket. There isn't any essential man, said Knowland. And he backed his judgment with his political future by filing him self as a candidate for the Re publican nomination , in several primaries. . Differs on Policy . Knowland bucked the admin istration on foreign policy. When Mr. Eisenhower proposed at the Geneva summit conference an aerial inspection at part of a general disarmament program, Knowland prevented Senate Re publicans from instantly ac claiming the proposition. Some of them might not have acclaimed anyway. Knowland eliminated all chance, however, by a simple device. He just failed to pass on to fellow Republicans the word that the proposal was coming and that the President hopedfor some quick and clam orous congressional cheers. Senate Democrats and House Republicans and Democrats were alerted. They sounded off on schedule and on key. Knowland's Republican brood read about it in the newspapers. That's the way things were going last year and for a while : into 1956 with Mr. Eisenhower and the young Senate leader. The air around Nixon, mean time, was full of what the late Hugh Johnson used4 to call dor-' nicks and dead cats. Nixon was under, doublfe-barrelled attack, first to get him off the Republi can ticket if Mr. Eisenhower was again a candidate and, second, to prevent his nomination for presi dent if that spot were open. Nix on "was getting almost as much publicity as Sen. Joseph R. Mc Carthy used to, most of it un friendly, and unkind. Arming Themselves Knowland, in his presidential primary offensive, and Gov. Goodwin J. Knight, back, home in California, were arming themselves against Nixon and the possibility that he might seek the presidency. All of this was building up to a first class ruck us when President ' Eisenhower returned from his golf vacation before last and announced he would run for president, after all. That ended the political ma neuvering among' Knowland, Knight and Nixon. The move ment to bounce Nixon off the ticket continued, however, sparked largely by amateur pol iticians , whose influence . rested solely on their personal associ ations with Mr. Eisenhower. Considerable publicity finally overtook that effort and per-v suaded Mr. Eisenhower to wel come Nixon aboard for 1956 in terms which probably will close the debate. .
