Readjusting ourselves to "day light'' as opposed to "God's time" is a wit I comparatively simple mauer these days Consider the plight of folks back there be t - i i, r - were, s y n- I i V" ; ' chronized by Harmao Nirhols When it was noon in Chicago it would be 12:31 in Pittsburgh; 12:24 in Cleveland; 12:17 in Toledo; 12:09 in Louisville; 12:07 in In dianapolis; 11:50 in St. Louis; 11:43 in Dubuque; 11:39 in St. Pairl, and 11:27 in Omaha. Heaven only knows how many different time zones there were before somebody wised up to the fact that it would be a good idea to get the clocks to working as a team on "standard time." In the old days the railroad had the very devil of a time. Take Buffalo. At one time there were three clocks in the railroad station. One time for New York by which the New York Central operated. Another for Columbus and the other for local Buffalo time. San Francisco Trip Rough And going from Eastport, Me., to San Francisco, was somewhat of a problem. A person could' wear out his watch running the hour hand back and forth. In the cross country run in the old days, he would have to twist the stem, around 20 times. In Kansas City, in the roaring days, each jeweler furnished his own "standard time." Competi tion dictated that no two clocks should be set the same. There was many a wager and many a busted beak over whose watch told the correct time. The business of fouling up the clock with "daylight time" has raised a lot of complaints. Farm ers say they can't teach a cow to give down juice when the sun isn't in the right place. Some poultrymen, perhaps with tongue in cheek, report that their bid dies on fast time lay square eggs with half a yolk. Paris laughed art Franklin Daylight fast time dates back to the days of Benjamin Frank lin. Penny-saving Ben dreamed up an idea of moving the clocks of Paris ahead to save wax can dles. Paris laughed and turned their berets backside-to in mockery. It was not until 1907 that the same idea was rekindled, this time in Britain. A fellow named William Willett gave it a whirl in a little booklet called "the waste of daylight." He thought it would be a good idea to run time up 80 minutes in summer in relays 20 minutes a month. A decade later an American champion of fooling around with time was found in a Pitsburgh businessman named Robert Gar land. He said that anything that breathes is smart. Anything, that is, except mere man "who is so stupid as to deprive himself of an extra hour of sun." Congress had a fight on its hands, but it finally passed a day light saving law in 1918. Lemmon Aline Mosby took home the Academy Award for best sup porting actor for "Mister Rob erts." Actually he was one of the stars of the picture but he entered the supporting Oscar race where he'd have a better chance. "That's not fair," the frank O'Connell said today. "Rosalind Russell was starred in 'Picnic' and she could have won the sup porting Oscar if she'd dropped to that category. But she refused to. "Why, when 'Picnic' opened I didn't even have any billing in the ads until after I was nom inated for the Oscar. It isn't fair for a star to buck a guy who doesn't even get his name up there." O'Connell's complaint is not that of a sore loser because he considers himself "a lucky guy," for not winning the Oscar. "More people are talkin' about the fact I didn't win it," he laughed. - O'Connell's Oscar nomination made him one of the few charac ter actors to have been boosted to stardom. He'll get "A" billing in his next picture, "The Monte Carlo Story," in which he'll ro mance the most glamorous queen of the screen, Marlene Dietrich. Government and financial cir cle here believe this decline in Influence is endangering the vast oil Investments which are im portant to both countries in the area. There is a growing struggle for power in the Arab world and the stakes are high. Two-thirds of the world's known oil re serves lie under Middle East sands. Britain's financial solvency depends on the steady flow of revenue from her oil fields in Iraq and Kuwait. United States oil companies, too, have big investments in Arab lands. There is a feeling in London that the United States is afraid of antagonizing Arab chiefs be cause it would imperil these oil investments, that this fear is con tributing to the general break down of Western prestige. Economic Life Thealened Many Britons are calling for a firm western stand now to pre vent further deterioration of the western position and to head off an Arab-Israeli war or explo sions of nationalism such as that which took place a few years ago in Iran. But there is no sign that Wash ington is sympathetic to the idea, despite the fact that it is a matter of economic life or death for Britain. There is little doubt that British and western prestige in the Middle East are on the wane. From the tiny Bahrain Islands in the Persian Gulf to the vast des ert kingdom of Libya in North Africa, the swelling call of Arab nationalism is"gradually winning control of the minds of 40,000, 000 Arabs. It was agitation against the Anglo-Iranian Oil company that put ex-Premier Mohammed Mossadegh in power in Iran and launched a turbulent period in which that country came dangerously close to fall ing into the Communist camp. The key states are Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. They are the biggest oil producers, and all three have shown signs of un rest. Iraq Stable for Moment Iraq, like Iran, is a constitu tional monarchy, investing most of its oil income in development projects such as a mammoth flood control and water conserv ation project that opened last week. Premier Nuri El Said, a veteran politician and old friend of the British, still wields a con trolling influence in the country and with the young Hashemite King Feisal. The situation apparently is stable in neighboring Jordan, an other Hashemite kingdom, when young King Hussein suddenly booted out the British com mander of Jordan's Arab Legion. Nuri is getting old, observers here point out, and his active role in Iraqi politics can be ex pected to decline. Iraq produced 33,700 tons of oil last year. Saudi Arabia, hottest actors in town. He was snapped up for top roles in "The Man In The Grey Flannel Suit," "The Solid Gold Cadillac," "The Proud Ones" and, currently, "Bus Stop." Composer Moss Hart even wants O'Connell to star in a Broadway musical. . Before "Picnic" this new sen sation was a successful but com paratively unknown Broadway actor for 27 years. He had no ambition, he admitted, to be come a star. How does he feel to have hit the jackpot in mid dle age? "I'll tell you honestly I'm waitin' for them to turn it off," he reflected. "I'm making more money in a week than I made in a year on the stage. But I'm afraid to buy a fancy car I might jinn this luck. "I'll just pretend it isn't real ly happening. And maybe it will keep going." Garden Notes By C. B. CORDY County Extension Agent for Horticulture Spring flowering shrubs such as forsythia and flowering quince should be pruned as soon as the blossoms have faded. Pruning during bloom is not at all detrimental, so if you would like to prune off some branches for decorations it would be quite all right to do so. These early blooming shrubs produce flowers on wood that has been grown the previous year so pruning now would stim ulate the plant into producing more of this young growth which will insure an abundance of blooms next spring. Small twigs scattered throughout the body of the bush should be left as these will fill in. and make the bush more compact appearing during bloom. Cut Back Severely In the case of forsythia the blooming canes should be cut back severely leading only short stubs on the older growth. Flow ering quince is pruned differ ently and in this case the canes which are four or five years old should be cut back lower to the ground leaving the younger canes to set spurs and bear fruit. Grape vines now are bleeding rather profusely so pruning should be delayed until the new growth has started; at which time the bleeding will be re duced and it will last over a shorter period. There is no way to stop bleeding once it starts. Time for Trimming This is also a good time to trim hedges and other plants which have grown too large and need to be cut back. By pruning at this time new growth will be made immediately and the ugly cuts will be' hidden from view in a very short time. Hedges should be trimmed so that the bottom of the hedge is slightly wider than the top. This gives the lower branches a better exposure to sunlight and they will remain healthy instead of becoming thin and straggly. Persistent cutting of a hedge is desirable as it will discourage the hedge from making an ex tremely vigorous growth. By hedging persistently and keep ing back any new growths which may become excessively vigor ous, the hedge may be kept nice and thick and after a few 'years of this persistent clipping the hedge' seems to give up and while it will remain nice and green it will make much less new growth and will require only infrequent trimming. In these cases fertilizers should be used sparingly or the hedge will again be stimulated into a vig orous condition. where an American oil com pany has the oil concession, pro duced 47,600 tons. The third rich oil island, Ku wait, is most closely watched of all in London. This tiny shiek dom is the biggest Middle East oil producer, and last year turned out 54,800 tons of. oil. As in Iraq a massive "development program is under way in Kuwait and so far the situation has been stable.
