Correspondent Washington "The reputation of the American dollar i at stake," wrote the citizen to Sec retary of the Treasury George M. Humphrey, demanding an explanation. "Is the Re publican dollar sound or isn't it?" he asked point blank of Ivy Baker Priest, treasur er of the Unit ed States. This inquiring taxpaying citi zen had not been among those who thought the country was enjoying false prosperity under President Eisenhower's admin istration. He thought it looked like the Democrats were holler ing down the wrong rain barrel in trying to challenge the Re publican Drosoerity of whicn their political foes were boast ing. Then came the turning point. He was standing in front of a news stand near the National Press building just a few blocks from where they print the na tion's money supply. He was pre paring to buy the best bargain in the country today a five cent newspaper. Dollar Parts Like any good cashier who is forking over money, he snapped his dollar bill a time or two to see that it was singular and not plural when pow! The buck L parted clean across the middle just east of George Washington's nose and just west of George Humphrey's signature. True, this bill had been some time en route from the Bureau Printing and Engraving, have the street to that point in front of the news dealer. But it was a long way from the federal in cinerator. This wage earner was clearly shocked to see his dollar appar ently as sound as the Republi cans claim split in two ap parently breaking under the stresses and strains of which the Democrats are always warning Dear Ivy, he wrote to the boss lady in charge of printing new money, "Here is your end of what looked like a good, sound Republican dollar. I am sending the Secretary of the Treasury his end. Here's hoping you two can get together for a solid ex planation of this fiscal tragedy. New Material? "You haven't been cutting corners down at the Bureau of Priting and Engraving, have you? I hear the Democrats used to use silk thread paper for the money they printed back in New Deal days. Have you come up with some new synthetic mate rial to cut printing costs and help Mr. Humphrey balance the budget? "If that's the reason my buck couldn't stand the pace of this dizzy economy, doesn't it look a bit penny . wise and dollar foolish?" To Humphrey, he told the same sad tale and said if this continues to happen "how do you expect the average Ameri can with a few busted bucks in his pocket to believe you when you talk about the virtues of today's prosperity?" The citizen is awaiting the explanation of the fiscal heads of the government. Solution to Problem A California biologist has re ported findings to the Smithso nian Institution here that may enrich the poor Arctic Eskimo and provide a solution to the world's over - population prob lem. Prof. G. E. MacGinitie, Arctic biologist, says a rise in Eskimo birth rate is due to their eating less muktuk and more of white man's foods rich in vitamins A and C. Muktuk is the Eskimo's No. 1 delicacy. It is whale skin with about an inch of underlying blubber. It is frozen, cut into small pieces and eaten raw. If the biologist is right that Eskimo papas have been pass ing out cigars more frequently since switching from muktuk to eggs and cheese, it's only a mat ter of time before an .Alaskan promoter turns the professor's equation around and markets muktuk the world around. Coast Guard Hunts For Pair at Sea Eureka, Calif. (U.R) The Coast Guard renewed its search today for a 40-foot boat which disappeared Thursday with two men aboard. On the boat, the Toiler, were K. A. Curtis Jr., 20, of Eureka, and Louis Piper, 26, of Crescent City. The boat left Crescent City for Eureka and was scheduled to complete the 150-mile trip Friday afternoon. The cutter Balsam from Eu reka and a four -engine coast guard plane from San Francisco searched yesterday and Saturday without results. Sheriff's officers checked the rocky California coast line in Humboldt and Del Norte counties but found no trace of the boat. The vessel was bought last week in Crescent City by Cur tis' father, a former Washington state fisherman. Bulgarian Premier Chermenkov Resigns London (U.R) Sofia radio said today the national assembly met today to consider the resig nation of Communist Bulgaria's Premier Vulko Chermenkov. The premier was criticized publicly last week for "bowing to the cult of the individual" the sin of Stalin. Sofia radio, broadcasting a home service news program, said the assembly met today to con sider an application " by Cher menkov to be "released from his duties." The announcement of Cher menkov's resignation came in a deadpan listing of the agenda for the national assembly. It listed item two as: "Examination of the applica tion of the chairman of the coun cil of ministers for release from his duties." Chermenkov came to power in 1953 during the Stalin era. Bulgarian newspapers last week began criticizing the pre mier for "errors" akin to those that led to the posthumous smearing of the late Soviet dic tator, Josef Stalin. Baseball Experts Even On Television Quiz New York (U.R) Two eld erly baseball experts battled it out on even terms last night on the $64,000 challenger television program. Mrs. Myrt Power, 72, New York, winner of $32,000 on "The $64,000 Question," and Walter Dunnett, 77, of Parsippany, N.J., both gave correct answers to questions on two successive no hit games pitched by Johnny Vandermeer of the Cincinnati Reds. The draw moves them to the $16,000 level next week. Two other contestants chal lenger Floyd Yeomans,, of War trace, Tenn., and champion Steven Frohlich, of Princeton, N.J., passed the $4,000 mark by naming the five men who drew up the Declaration of Independence. Letters for the three basket ball squads were presented by their respective coaches, Robert Work, seventh grade; Bernie Averill, eighth grade; and Bar ney Riggs, ninth. The ninth grade team presented Coach Riggs with an autographed bas ketball. Wrestling awards were pre sented by Coach Karl Kahle; band by Director Ward Smith; and orchestra, Director John Drysdale. Paul Moore was awarded the David Dunn Memorial trophy as the most inspirational bas- ketbal player of the year. The history trophy was pre sented to the junior high school by Mrs. J. Q. O'Albini and Mrs. George Carter, regent of the! lo cal chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. The assembly was closed with the school song. PAVEMENT POSIES Portland, Ore. U.R) The City Council is considering a proposal to. beautify the business district. The Portland Retail Tradev Bureau has offered to underwrite a $20,000 project to hang flower pots filled with roses and trailing vines on down town lamp posts. The city's park department has indorsed the idea. Use Mail Tribune Want Ad First Airborne Glider Pickup Made Escondido, Calif .(U.R) T h e first known airborne glider pick up in history has been made here to prove that an engine less craft can be picked up in flight by a plane's tow rope. Don C. Stevens, glider trick champion and holder of the world's glider loop record of 118 consecutive loops, and Charles Webber, a Pomona, Calif., electronics engineer, made the history making test pickup Saturday. Webber, flying a Super-Cub light plane, towed Stevens' glid er to 3,500 feet, where the glider was cut free from the plane's tow rope. The plane circled into position above the glider's nose and Stevens reached up with his hand and grabbed hold of a ring at the end of the tow rope. The glider was re-towed for more than a mile before Stevens let go of the tow rope. The test was made to perfect a special tow hook that would enable glid ers to explore 1,000 miles of ter ritory out of present glider range. Chicagc (U.R) Henry Waw rusiewicz saved his pennies for four years and bought a new Lincoln automobile.
