"You know these coconut trees here at the Kaiulani are all transplants, don't cha. Besides, they're downright dangerous. My friend, Joe Filoni he's the manager, you know has to keep the coconuts trimmed out. Might konk a paying guest on the head, and believe, me, I'd sue 'em for all they've got . . ." "But what of the flowering trees?" "Sure, fine, Burns. I go for them. But are they Hawaiian? You know, just about every one of these blooming trees comes from Asia . . ." He pointed vaguely past Diamond Head. "That reminds me. Guess that you've heard about that tradi tion the one about throwing your leis overboard from the Lurline. Know how that one got started?" Another Gimmick I allowed I hadn't. He ex plained. "It's another gimmick, Burns. A lazy good-for-nothing steward got sick and tired of tossing those old, tired, stinking spoiled flower leis over the side of the ship each night. So what does this smart operator do? Next trip, he circulates this tra- diton: says, if you throw your lei overboard as the Lurline passes Diamond Head and it floats to shore, it means you'll come back. Ha, ever heard of a lei floating? "So what? You're never com ing back to this 'tourist camp are you?" "Who, me!" he demanded. "Look, Burns, where could you have it so good? Wonderful cli mate. Beautiful country. Love ly girls. Why I wouldn't miss it for a thousand bucks. Fact is, I've been coming regular for the past five years. And you meet so many interesting people. Dames has been named chairman of the Beaver Boys State committee by Med ford Post 15, American Legion. He succeeds Col. W. H. Paine, who has been in charge of the Legion's program to send from 30 to 40 boys to Boys State each year for the past 15 years. Commander M. E. Fisher named Colonel Paine honorary chairman, and Carl Olson and Ed Russell as committee mem bers to assist Dames. Dames served 3V4 years in the navy during World War II, and was separated as a lieutenant. He moved to Medford in 1949. Dames, who has assisted Colonel Paine with Beaver Boys State activities for several years, said he expected to have another large delegation from Medford this year. The state-wide Beaver Boys State, held at Oregon State col lege in early summer, is part of a national Legion program to train future active citizens. Medford Girl Wins Music Scholarship Miss Sonja Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Peterson, 2574 Jacksonville highway, has been awarded the Nancy Black Wallace music scholarship of four years' tuition to Willa mette university. The announcement, made to day by I. A. Mirick, supervisor of instrumental music for Med ford schools, followed auditions March 10 at Willamette. Miss Peterson, a senior at Medford High school, is first vio linist with the orchestra and al so plays the oboe and piano and is a member of the school band. She won the scholarship for pi ano and violin performance. Signal Light Installed On Eagle Point Street Eagle Point A flashing red traffic light to control traffic at the intersection of Brownsboro rd. and West Main st. in Eagle Point has been installed by the state highway department. It should be in operation with in a few days, according to May or Don Ashpole, when permis sion is received from the state. He said the installation has been sought by the city for three years as a protection to the 300 children who cross the intersec tion daily going to and from the schools. Father and Son, 40, Hold First Meeting Portland (U.R) Pete Mano lis, 70, and his 40-year-old son met for the first time yesterday. The meeting was held at the Union Station here and both father and son were back in Longview, Wash., today wnere the son, Fortios, has a job as a janitor. Pete Manolis was born in Greece and came to the U.S. at the age of 15. He returned to Greece in 1912 when his country was engaged in a war with the Turks, and married. He return ed to this country to plan for the return of his bride but learn ed later she had died in child birth after bearing a son. Then began the long battle, held up by war, red tape and a depres sion, to get the son to this coun try. Tn World War II.
