Newspaper Page Texti; Buried TreasureB Proof Coins Opportunity A special opportunity for pro fit exists in the proof coin mar ket, an opportunity that arises from a peculiar misapplication of the law of supply and de mand. As of now, proof coins those made from polished metal on polished dies do not have their values governed by their com parative scarcity. Instead they are governed by other factors, including the comparative scar city of the uncirculated regular coins of which they are the proofs. For example, the catalogue value of an 1883 proof $20 gold piece is S1.200. Only 92 of them were issued. The value of the proof $20 gold piece for 1874, however, is only S300, even though there were only 20 such coins issued. How does this anomalous con dition come about in which one thing, four times commoner than another, is worth four times the price? Apparently it comes mainly from a misapprehension of the nature of proofs. Such coins ob viously were never meant to circulate as money, any more than medals or tokens were. GUN STORE YIELDS VALUABLE OLD MAP We were looking for old guns and not having any luck when Jim suddenly announced he would call it quits. "Theres nothing in this junk that I want," he said, glancing round the shop. '"So I'll just sit here and look at this map while you finish up." It took me about ten minutes more to find there was nothing I wanted either, and in that length of time Jim had decided to buy the map. "It'll be $10" said the owner. "It must be a really important item," I said, "because you didn't kick very hard about the price." Jim explained it was a map of the Ohio river, just like one he used to have as a boy back home in the Buckeye State. Though only - 13 inches wide, the map was 128 long, almost 11 feet. This misapprehension is fur ther compounded by a confusion of the comparative scarcities of the regular coinage. There were well over a million double eagles coined in both 1874 and 1883, the years for which the proof coin values are given above. Coins of those years are consequently very common. But regular coins, in uncircu lated condition the nearest thing to proof conditions are not. For whether a regular $20 gold piece actually passed from hand to hand, or just sat in a bag in some vault, it got scratched and nicked through movement. In fact, an uncirculated 1883 $20 gold piece is so rare that its rarity has carried over to the 1833 proof. . And that's fine, for the smart collector with the 1883 proof to day would be well advised to take his $1,200 in cash and buy as many of the far rarer 1874 proofs as he could get. If he did so and the same thing applies to all other coins between which comparable relations exist he would certainly realize a sub stantial extra profit over the next few years. I was surprised to see that it gave the full course of the Ohio from source to mouth. Not only that, it even gave soundings in the river, as well as the names of towns and villages and farms along its banks. "Why this is in French," I said. "Sure. It's from the atlas of a work published in Paris in 1826 called "Voyage dans L'Amerique Septentrionale.' The map is made by the famous Tardieu There's his name," and Jim pointed it out. The famous Tardieu was not famous to me, so I looked him up that evening only to find that Jim had not done so badly after all. I'm certain that in most cases their popularity would soon in crease if only they were tried by more flower gardeners. So I am starting a one-woman cam paign to put a few of these varieties in the limelight. The little pompon aster, grow ing to a height of around' 12 in ches, is one variety that should be much more popular with flower growers. Its small, button-like flowers, measuring from 1 to Hi inches across, are pro duced in profusion on upright growing plants. They are espec ially desirable for small bou quets, since they last from ten days to two weeks after being cut. A planting on the way to your garage would entice the men in your family to have flowers in their buttonholes all day long. Though asters in general are quite popular, it seems to me that the rainbow strain of single asters deserves much more pop ularity than it usually receives. The single, daisy-like flowers, measuring 2Vz to 3 inches across, are found in lovely shades of salmon, pink, rose, lavender, pur ple, blue and red. The colors in general are much richer than those found in the ordinary strains of asters and, in addition, the variety is unexcelled among asters for cutting, because of the long stems and unusual keeping qualities. (U.R) Father Patric Hutton braced himself today for happy suf ferance of one more round in an onslaught that began March 12 when Margaret Truman an nounced her marriage plans. Besieged daily by an army of reporters, news photographers, television cameramen and the just plain curious, the youthful rector of Trinity. Episcopal church managed a friendly smile for all comers, but admitted the situation was "trying." - His wife was more emphatic. "He doesn't even, have a mo ment for his own affairs," she said. Father Hutton, an amiable, handsome man with' an esthetic face, said he was "honored" to be asked to perform the wedding ceremony. He has known Miss Truman as a member of his parish only since he became rector at Trinity last September, he said. At Christmas time she sang with the choir in a midnight communion service. No, there was no solo. Only the regular liturgical music and carols, sung as hymns, by the entire choir. The ceremony in which Miss Truman will marry Clifton Dan iel will not differ by one word from the brief ritual contained in the Book of. Common Prayer of the Protestant Episcopal church, Father Hutton said. There will be pre-marriage in struction for the ' couple, in ac cordance with church law, but Father Hutton declined to reveal where or by whom it would be given. Episcopal law requires, he said, that each couple receive "full instruction in Christian marriage." Dahlias to Gardeners varieties, contained either the feathered celosia or the cocks comb type. In the cockscomb type, toreador, a recent All America selection, seemed to be the favorite. In the feathered varieties, the mixture of colors seemed to be most popular, with flame of fire a close second, per haps some of those selecting the celosias did so when they learned that both the feathered and cockscomb types can be dried and used for .Winter bouquets. Most everybody thinks of dahlias as being a variety that must be grown from tubers, and perhaps that is why more are not grown from seeds. However, the dwarf bedding types of dahlias, growing about 18 inches tall and producing both single and double flowers, are as easy to grow from seeds as are zinnias. A packet of dahlia seeds which will produce dozens of plants, usually sells for less than the price of a single tuber. Grow ing from seeds also avoids the necessity of digging up the tubers and storing them through the winter months. Salpiglossis Good ' Salpiglossis is a truly beautiful flower which would perhaps be helped by a more attractive name. No other flower has colors exactly like those found in Sal piglossis. Their depth and rich ness are enhanced by veins of gold in many of the flowers. It is one of the easiest annuals to grow, and for a really pleasant surprise you should try it this year.
