April 12, 195S APPLEGATE-JACKSONVILLE Service Station Sets Opening By HELGA MITCHELL Applegate-Jacksonville The Vaileyview Richfield service sta tion will be opened on Saturday, April 14, according to the pro prietors, Mr. and Mrs. Bill De Sh'azo. Flower books and seeds will be handed out to all custom ers on opening day, with bal loons for the children. Perry Greene, Los Angeles, who is an experienced mechanic, will also be employed at the station. De Shazo, whose trade is auto fend er and body painting, said that this ig his first venture in ser vice station work. The DeShazos, who have owned a 83-acre ranch on Upper Applegate for the last 10 years, became permanent residents two years ago. Prior to that they lived in Los Angeles and came up here during the summers and hunting seasons. Mrs. DeShazo, who was born in West Virginia 63 years ago, has spent those years in varied occupations Twenty-one of these years she worked for Universal, Para mount and M.G.M. studios in the film department. Besides this, she has been an expert marksman since she was a little girl, having learned to shoot on an old muzzle-loading gun. She received her first inspiration to shoot from the original Annie Oakley in Point Pleasant, W. V. Annie Oakley was putting on an exhibition, and Mrs. DeShazo watched Annie keep a can sus pended in the air by continu ously shooting at it. When I saw her shoot, I wanted to be as good as she was." she related, and to thig day Mrs. DeShazo . still keeps spectators gaping when she displays her skill. Services at the Ruch Com munity church for Sunday, April 15, include Sunday school, 10 a.m.; morning worship, 11 a.m. At the latter service. Miss Mabel Terrell from Sudan Interior Mission will show slides of the work in Africa. Bible study in the book of Ephesians at 8 p.m. Seventy persons attended the Sunday school last Sunday, and a good number turned out last Sunday night to hear the Wil liams Community church choir ng under the direction of the Rev. and Mrs. Virgil Terry. The Little Applegate Knitting club will meet at the home of Mrs. Wilford Pearson of Upper Applegate on Tuesday, April 17, at 2 p.m. A pre-school clinic will be held at the Ruch school on Thursday, April 19, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. All children en tering first grade in September are eligible, immunizations will be offered to those desiring it, with Dr. A. E. Merkel in charge. WTith the seeds planted and dust on the roads, the recent rain was a welcome visitor. Nu merous readers expressed their joy at having such a timely rain. Mrs. Harry Davis of Beaver Creed rd., recently contracted the flu. Mrs. M. W. Couch of the Ap plegate rd., underwent surgery last Monday at the Community hospital in Medford. Two birthdays were celebrated recently at the Henry Pawlow ski residence, those of their son, Jerry, and their nephew, Floyd Pawlowski, and their son and daughter, Norman and Kay, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff McGinty, and Miss Marilyn Myhre of Medford. Fred L. Straube, son of Mr. end Mrs. Louis Straube of Upper Applegate, joined the National Guard recently. Mrs. Ray Hudson and Mrs. Merrill Rawson of Portland, sis ters of Kermit Combes of Upper Applegate, returned home last Saturday. Mrs. W. A. Childers of Jack sonville recently spent several days with her daughter, Mrs. Chester Jones in Upper Apple gate. Susan McGinty of Medford, who is a candidate for the Pear Blpssom Queen contest, is the granddaughter of Mrs. Henry Pawlowski. Mrs. Paul E. Pearce of Ster ling Creek left Sunday morning j for Los Angeles and is expected back sometime next week. Mrs. Verna Sutherlin of Upper Applegate recently returned from a trip to White Salmon, Wash., where she visited Mr. and Mrs. Sid Claridge and sons, Mike and Jim Rhoades. Mike and Jim formerly resided at the Sutherlin home. Mrs. Jennie Herslof of Apple gate left for Butte, Mont., last Saturday, due to the death of her brother-in-law, C. A. Phil lips. Mesdames Fred Offenbacher, Ted Adams and Carter Hibbs drove to Carmel, Calif., recently for a little vacation. They also visited Mr. and Mrs. Vern Frago, San Leandro; former residents of this area. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Sample of Klamath Falls were recent visitors at the George Sample residence in Sterling Creek. While here, the Edgar Samples attended the archery tournament at Williamson's ranch in Central Point. Marsha Sample, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Sample, returned to school last week af ter a prolonged illness. Tempo rarily, she is permitted to attend school two days a week, which will increase with time. Andy Landdforce from Ore gon State college will speak to the Applegate Fisherman's and 4-H Forestry clubs Thusrday, April 19, at 8 p.m. in the Apple gate school. Anyone interested is welcome. At the last Applegate PTA meeting it was decided that Bob Tolle will be civilian defense director for the Applegat earea. Last Tuesday was the Curtis Gerhardt'i 30th wedding anni versary. Mrs. Gebhardt, who drives the Applegate school bus, was overwhelmed with the thoughtfulness of the children on her bus, when they sang "Happy Anniversary" to her, and pre sented her with a card which had been signed by all the chil dren. ("Those kids can certainly make you feel a warm glow in side," Mrs. Gerhardt said. Mrs. Daisy Lewis of Jackson ville is temporarily teaching the third grade class in the Ruch school. The Joe Farrands returned home last Saturday from their recent pleasure trip to Califor nia. They visited their daughter and son-in-law, Br. nad Mrs. Joe Rocha, in Ferndale, and visited several friends there. Then they continued on through the Red woods to Blue Lake, Clear Lake and Williams. They visited their son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Farrand in Orland. They also visited Joe Farrands moth er, Mrs. Mary Farrand, and oth er friends. On their way home, they came through Redding. Mrs. Farrand remarked how shocked they were to see the vast de struction the winter floods had caused in a section between Cres cent City and Garberville. Huge holes had been dug in the fields, homes had been completely turn ed around, and there was a great loss in livestock. The Red Cross had done a great deal to help families that had suffered a total loss, Mrs. Farrand stated. A birthday party for 10-year-old James Mitchell was held at the Francis J. Mitchell residence on "Top o' the Hill" last Mon day. Guests attending were Patty and Larry Hogan, Kay Pawlow ski, Shirley and Calvin Walker, Wayne and Ernie Hinkle, Mrs. Edgar Walker, Mrs. A. Pawlow ski, and Mrs. Henry Burmeister. Games were played indoors and outdoors, and Jimmy opened his gifts. Guests attending brought their dogs along, so with the Mitchells' two-dogs, there were five dogs prancing with the chil dren. Mrs. Cora Stone, a hill top resident, recently left for Cor vallis to visit her daughter, Mrs. C. M. Richey. Rurai Reflections: Fishermen have been anxiously eyeing the waters of the Applegate river in anticipation of the general trout season. Since the recent rain the river has become murky, which caused Curt Gerhardt to moan, County Court Opens Bids on Truck Crane The county court Wednesday opened bids from seven firms, to furnish the county a truck crane with capacity of 12l,i tons or more. Submitting bids were Clyde Equipment company, Columbia Equipment company, Loggers and Contractors, Contractors Equipment company, Nelson Equipment company, Western Equipment company and Fee naughty Equipment company. The court took the bids under advisement. "The river is up, and I can't see the fish!" Two New Tree Farms Added To Oregon Total Portland (U.R) The certi fication of two new farms yes terday pushed western Oregon's tree farm acreage over the 2, 000,000 mark. The two farms are L.H.L. tree farm in Yamhill, Tillamook and Washington counties with an acreage of 23,899 and the Gates tree farm in Lincoln coun ty with 2108 acres. SNOWBALL EXCUSE Cullowhee, N.C. (U.R) Three Western Carolina college students had their excuses with them when they arrived late for class during Wednesday's snow storm. They handed their teach er a snowball one foot in diameter. Socialite Found Stabbed To Death Cincinnati, O. (U.R) Po lice sought today the weapon wielded in the stabbing of a socialite found lying in a pool of blood by her husband when he returned home from work. The body of Mrs. William W. Pugh, 34, clad in a robe and pa jama tops, was found in the doorway of their exclusive Hyde Park home by her husband, president and treasurer of the A. H. Pugh Printing Co. Police Lt. Charles Martin said the woman had been stabbed in the neck and upper chest and had wounds on both arms. Capt. Willard Ebert said Mrs. Pugh apparently had been dead for three hours. DAV Favors Beds at Camp White Center The Jackson county chapter of Disabled America Veterans this week voted in favor of in stallation of 50 surgical and medical beds at the Camp White veterans domiciliary. The action follows a resolu tion by the Medford American Legion post asking that beds be installed at Camp White. DAV officials said they con curred with Legion action be cause pending improvements of surgical facilities in the Portland veterans administration hospital will eliminate between 40 and 50 beds. Local veterans organi zations believe the government could profit in the long run by installing facilities for hospital beds at Camp White. The local DAV chapter plans to draw up a resolution to pre sent to the state convention in Salem June 13-16 asking for beds at Camp White.
