He said the Cabinet has intimate contact with the Presi dent and knows in case of presi dential incapacity, whether there is an emergency requiring action beyond the President's abilities. Corvallis Man Beaten By Pair Near Eureka Eureka, Calif. iU.R) Everett Stanley, 43-year-old Corvallis. Ore., logger told police yesterday two hitchhikers he picked up at Cresecent City beat him up and took his car late yesterday. Stanley, who was, hospitalized overnight at an Orick hospital with severe head lacerations said the hitchhikers clubbed him with heavy shoes and forced him to drive down Highway 101. Stanley said that at Orick he managed to overpower one of the two men, slow down the car and jump out. Salem (U.R) Gov. April 12. 1958 The Medical Roundup by Rus Polyps In The Intestine Many elderly persons are much worried when a roent- pprtniopic study of the colon or large b o w el shows the p r e s e nee of polyps. These are little tum ors often as big as the end of a finger and looking much like a blackish ..alter Alvarez in u b in u u in with a top and a stern. Most of them are potentially malig nant, which means that event ually cancer can arise in them. Fortunately, it arises in the top and not around the stem of the polyp. This perculiarity is reas suring when, for one reason or another, it is inadvisable to op erate immediately. It means that there is more time in which an x-ray man can watch the polyp to see if it is going to grow. Usually, these polyps produce no symptoms. They are discov ered accidentally when the large bowel happens to be x-rayed. Very rarely a big polyp will be on the end of a long thin neck, and then the bowel will pull on it and try to pass it as it would pass a little lump of feces. Then there may be cramps and a feeling as if the bowel wanted to move; then there may be a little blood in the feces. Once in my medical life a pa tient sent me a polyp as big as a banana which his bowel had pulled off and passed. I have reason to believe that usually these little black polyps grow very slowly, if at all. In many cases they never become cancerous. I know this because I have seen so many at autopsy on persons who died of some thing else. I was much interested once on seeing a polyp in the large bowel of a healthy boy of 14 who had been killed in an auto acicdent. Since I have very rarely seen a case of cancer of the colon in a person under age of 28, I strongly suspected that if this boy had lived, his polyp would have lain dormant for at least 14 years. Polyps Watched I remember, also, an elderly woman in whose colon there had been found three large polyps. Because at the time she was mentally disturbed, I did not want her operated on, and so I just had the polyps looked at every six months. Working through an electricially-lighted tube he can dessicate (burn up or dry up) the polyps with the help of a very hot electric sparks. Certainly, polyps, when dis covered, should not be forgotten and neglected. They should often be removed surgically, but when the patient is old or feeble or in poor shape for an operation, his physician will be justified in watching with the x-rays for months or years to see if the little tumors show any tendency to grow. North Dakota gets 11 per cent of any income over $15,000. Oregon's normal tax rate jumps to eight per cent on income over $8,000, while Wisconsin collects 8Vfe per cent normal tax on any taxable earnings ever $14,000. Oregon ' and Wisconsin also levy 45 per cent and 20 per cent surtaxes respectively, computed on the basis of the normal tax payment. Colorado had been getting 10 per cent on income of more than $11,000 but granted a 20 per cent reduction last year.
