Leisure Time Said Problem For Americans New York With Americans already "energetically pursuing leisure," shorter working hours will make the wholesome use of free time a major national prob lem, an authority on recrea tional activities declared here recently. John W. Fulton, executive vice-president of the American Music conference, reported on various studies showing that the amount of money spent on re creational activities is rising fas ter than any other segment of the American economy. This country is changing from a society based on work to one based primarily on the utiliza tion of leisure time, he declared. "The American people, find ing themselves with more lei sure than working hours, and with money to spend enjoying them, have a problem that is new in mankinds history," Ful ton said. The promised four-day week about 1965 will bring a crisis for many people, unless they are prepared for a life in which lei sure time is much more import ant than working time, he pointed out. "Training for such conditions of life," Fulton said, "must be gin now. The children now in school will face this serious problem by the time they reach maturity. If they are not pre pared, we will find more and more of the social problems arising from the boredom and maladjustment that come to per sons with time .they don't know how to use. Fulton attributes much of the recent boom in musical activity to this research for wholesome outlets for leisure. "There are more than 28,000 000 people in the United States today who play a musical in strument," he pointed out. "Rlu sic has ability to turn leisure into creativeness." Believing and Liking 'Reinforce' Memory, Scientist Declares MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Young Republicans To Hear Californian Portland (U.R) Republic an Congressman Craig Hosmer of California will be the featur ed speaker at the Young Re publican Federation pre-primary convention meeting in Eugene this week-end, officers of the group announced yesterday. The two-day convention is scheduled to open Friday with one of the highlights expected to be proposed endorsement of Re publican candidates in the pri mary election. Speculation has arisen that there may be a fight over the en dorsement of a candidate for the Republican nomination for U. S. Senator, with some factions leaning toward Interior Secre tary McKay while others favor the candidacy of Philip Hitchcock. By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York (U.R) Scientific tests of human memory have turned up a new way to improve your memory both positively and negatively. It is to believe and like the things you want to remember and to disbelieve and dislike the things you want to forget. Believeing and liking "rein force"one another when it comes to remembering, and it works in reverse. Disbelieving and dislik ing when they go together, foul up the memory. Increase Chances What is new in these findings of Dr. Robert B. Garber, New York psychologist, are the mem ory effects that believing and liking and disbelieving and dis liking have upon one another. In one of his series of tests, he confirmed what everyone knows that believing in something in creases the chances that you'll remember it. On the other hand, not believing doesn't . influence Macy's Employees Go Out on Strike New York OJ.P.) Eight thou sand unionized employees of Macy's, the world's largest de partment store, went on strike today against the giant Manhat tan store and its four suburban branches. Efforts to negotiate a new contract broke down during the week end and pickets began forming lines in front of Macy's at 12:01 a.m. The striking employees, mem bers of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Workers union, include sales men and women, non-selling employees and non-executive office person nel. Union leaders said the pick ets would urge customers not to patronize the store. memory one way or the other. But the results of his tests with liking and disliking may come to most people as a surprise. Evi dently liking something doesn't greatly increase the chances of remembering. He couldn't be sure that disliking increased the chances of forgetting his results were only in that "direction." When he began experimenting on how believing and liking worked together on memory, his results were most consistent. There seemed no doubt that when mixed together, they greatly strengthened the power to recall whatever the two were focussed upon. Which is the strongest, believ ing or liking? Garber didn't neglect that question but devised testsin which his human subjects dealt with believing while dis liking and disbelieving while lik ing. His conclusion was that lik ing would dominate over dis believing and disliking over believing in deciding whether memory would be good or bad. Milk With Fruit Flavor Under Test Ithica, N. Y. (U.R) The Cornell University's agricultural experiment station plans to adopt a "Dutch treat" fruit-flavored milk. Barring technical problems, test selling strawberry, cherry, peach or blackberry milk in vending machines is slated to start at Cornell this spring. Dr. R. F. Holland, head of the university's department of dairy industry, said Dutch scientists have developed a process by which high-grade pectin, a sub stance familiar to homemakers who put up jellies and jams, is mixed with milk and sugar. After that, fruit juice is added. The Cornell experiment will be the first tests made of the Dutch process in this country. SILVER ANNIVERSARY Cleveland, O.
