TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, April 6, 1956 PAL Ends Boxing Season Here With 15-Bout Card on Saturday Medford Police Athletic League aims to wrap up the box ing season on the local front with a tremendous flourish Saturday night. Means of accomplishing this objective is its 15-bout parade of fights at the St. Mary's school gymnasium. The card will be the last held here during the current PAL season. Some of the top talent from outside of the Portland area is being brought here for the big fistic show. The boxers will be from the Klamath Falls Moose Boys club, the Burns Elks Boys club, from Medford PAL and from Ashland. Bouts have been arranged in a variety of weights to assure one of the best bal anced cards that the Police Ath letic League has staged since its organization. The large number of bouts which the sponsors say will be run off with a minimum of delay in between, is almost certain to provide some lulu conflicts. Puscas Battle Jackie Puscas, 135. Medford and Cliff Sams, 138, Burns, are to provide the main dish of the evening the final event but may have to produce some whirlwind action to top some of the 14 previous combats for thrills. Puscas, feared for his knockout punch, was the 1955 national AAU champion. Sams has been a national semi-finalist and is a clever boxer who also packs a KO wallop. Larry Lewis, 114, Medford, state AAU titlist, gets "another chance" at Lloyd Louie, 115, Burns, in the semi-main. Louie got the nod over Larry in the Portland Golden Gloves and Lewis and a lot of others thought he was robbed. The two also met once at Burns in a bout which was termed a draw. Fans are expecting to see an improved Loren Christean when the 180-pound Medfordite tackles Del Smith, 182, Burns, in the special event. Christean. who made a fine impression in the Golden Gloves. Christean will tune-up for the fight Saturday afternoon by running a lap for the Medford high mile relay team in the Rogue Relays. Dick Lopez, 179, a Medford scrapper who attends Southern Oregon college, will meet Mose Martinez, Chiloquin in the fea tured prelim. There will be nine Medford and nine Burns boys on the card and they will be foes in seven of the bouts. First fight is set for 8:30 p.m. PAL BOXING CARD St. Mary's Gym Saturday, 8:30 p.m. MAIN EVENT , Jacki Puscas. 135. Medford. vs. Cliff Sams, 138. Burns. SEMI-MAIN Larry. Lewii, 114. Medford? vi. Charlie Powell Knocks Out Que San Francisco (U.R) Bomb throwing Charlie Powell of San Diego was back in business to day as a kockout artist in the wake of a crunching third round victory over Charlie Que of Los Angeles. The enormous Powell, who scaled 209 pounds and out weighed his opponent by 21, stopped Que in 24 seconds of the third round after 'softening him up just before the bell ended the second. Late in that second session Powell staggered Que with an explosive right to the jaw,-then battered him with lefts and rights just before the bell gave his opponent a short reprieve. The San Francisco Forty Niner end lost little time ending the fight in the third as he caught Que again with a volley of lefts and rights to the head which seht him falling to the canvas. ?r met"' - .. s-- fit' tfi FEATURED BY PAL Dick Lo pez, above, will appear in the featured preliminary Saturday j night in the Police Athletic j league boxing card at St. Mary's j gym here. Dead tine Sundav Classified is at noon Saturday 10 am Mondav toi j Monday other davs 5:30 orevious day Joe Giambra 2-1 Favorite Syracuse, N.Y. (U.R) Flashy Joey Giambra, who hopes to re gain the middleweight ranking he owned before serving a 2 year Army hitch, was rated a 2-1 favorite today to beat Bri tain's Johnny Sullivan in to night's nationally-televised 10 round bout. In his only bout since doffing khaki, the 24-year-old battler from Buffalo, N.Y., was dull and unimpressive in decisioning Al Andrews last Jan. 25. He also has been bothered by a series of minor injuries. Sullivan, also 24, hails from Preston, England, but now lives in Jersey City, N.J.. and is an "American-style" fighter. Like Giambra, he likes ,to whale his rivals' bodies, so tonight's battle could turn into a rib-thumping endurance contest. 10 OFF FOR 10 DAYS!
