B. Tuck er, chief county agent, has an nounced. Also voting on the issue will be growers in Jefferson county. Jackson and Jefferson counties are the two principal producing areas. A hearing on the issue was held here in March and Paul T. Rowell, chief of the market de velopment division for the state department of agriculture, au thorized the election. Nine Jackson county growers are eligible to vote, Tucker ex plained. In order to be eligible a farmer must be currently grow ing the past three years. Partnership Votei All such owners, renters or lessees are eligible to vote. In partnership arrangements, one of the partners may cast a single vote. Growers who live else where, are absent from the state or are disabled may obtain ab sentee ballots from the state department of agriculture. The commission will be created if affirmative votes are cast by two-thirds of the growers voting and producing at least one -third of the state's ladino clover seed. Balloting in Jackson county will be in the county agents' office at the courthouse. Wool Producers lo File for Payments Eligible wool producers desir ing payment under the wool jn cetive payment program for the market year ending April 1 should file applications by April 30, according to Talbert (Tab) Sehorn, Agricultural Stabiliza tion and Conservation office manager. Applications should be filed at the ASC, office in the county oourthouse. Sehorn said that no incentive payments will be made this year tor mohair since the national average selling price was higher than the incentive level estab lished under the law. Aleutians Not Forgotten as Key To America's Northern Defenses an "amazingly high esprit de corps" among military person nel. In February, 1955, the Alas kan Command signed a 3325,000 (with adjustments) contract with the Bankers Life and Casualty Co., Chicago, for the concern to remove usable salvage from abandoned bases. Siill Strategic Bankers Life now has a crew on various islands, reclaiming such items as plumbing that had not deteriorated completely in the wartime installations. The present contract runs through 1958. Between the end of World War II and October, 1955, the armed services had taken steps to return 700,000 acres of Aleu tian territory to other units of the federal government for eventual return, as no longer needed for defense, to the public domain. However, " the rollback does not mean that the Aleutians are no longer of strategic purposes. A look at the map makes it obvious that some defenses, pre- Kodiak, Alaska U.R) The Aleutian Islands, where so many Americans fought Japanese and the world's worst weather dur ing World War II, are lonesome now in this age of jet planes, nuclear weapons and cold war but not forgotten. Kiska and Attu, only Ameri can soil occupied by the Japa nese during the Pacific War, have been virtually abandoned to the elements in the new scheme of things. So have many of the other is lands of the Aleutian chain, stretching far to the southwest from the underbelly of Alaska. On them now there are only natives and crews salvaging some of the war's leftovers. But on others, particularly Kodiak at the eastern end of the chain, and Adak, well out in the line of island dots, reasonably strong military establishments being retained. Kodiak is the headquarters of Rear Adnr. Kenneth Craig, com mander of the Alaska Sea Fron tier which, with the Air Force and Army, makes up the over all joint Alaskan Command. Originally outfitted as a sea plane base, Kodiak now serves all branches of the naval service including Coast Guard units that patrol the- weather-treacherous Great Circle sea lane from Amer ica's West Coast to Japan. 12 Airports in Aleutians Adak, whose north-facing Ku luk Bay affords an excellent an chorage for all types of craft, is the forward base of operations for the Navy. Its landing field, one of the best in the chain, is kept in reasonably good condi tion. Shemya, 20 miles east of Attu and the only non-mountainous island in the Aleutians, also is kept busy. Its big airfield, con structed during the closing days of World War II to a size that could handle B29s, is a refueling stop for Northwest Airlines and other planes flying the northern route to the Orient. There are now 12 airports in the Aleutians that are kept in some degree of operation to the extent "permitted by deteriora tion and weather," according to Capt. A. C. Burrows, deputy chief of staff . of the Alaskan Command. -- Admiral Craig and Captain Burrows toured all bases recent- High altitudes are best to ob- ly and Burrows said they found serve cosmic rays. Medford Man Wins Mexico Trip Contest Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Amidon, 730 West 11th st., plan to leave next Tuesday for Mexico, where they will vacation about a week and a half. The trip was award ed the Amidons as a prize in a sales program of the Permutit Water conditioning company, of which Amidon is local repre sentative. The contest, which was held during December and January, included salesmen west of the Mississippi river. Amidon has been northern California and southern Oregon representative since 1937. Soviets Might Evade Should the cold war turn hot, strategists are certain to realize that Soviet bomber forces might attempt to evade heavy defenses of Alaska proper and try to fly from Siberia toward the Amer ican mainland direct. Such a course would take the warcraft directly over at least some of the Aleutians. It was just off St. Lawrence Island, in the Bering sea just north of the Aleutians, that a Navy Neptune patrol plane was shot down by Russian MIGS on June 22, 1955. The Soviet Union recently paid S724.947.68 in damages for the incident. Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY r United Press Correspondent Hollywood (U.P.) Smith started training Lobo and ,his other dogs when they were a year old. They played Wolves in one western movie and then took on for five years the nightclub circuit. In clubs they did imitations of elephants and other animals. Double Also Signed Lassie's trainer, Rudd Weath erwax, recommended that U-I sign the German shepherd and his double, Timer, for "Kelly and Me." Another trainer, Bob Williams, is "choreagrapher" for the dancing Lobo in this canine musical. "He's a magnificent dog," Wil liams said as he put Lobo through his paces. "There never has been a role so demanding on a, dog. Audiences will be amazed." This week Lobo celebrated his sixth birthday. He tossed a party for other cinema canines, with the help of the studio publicity department. In attendance were Daisy, Red Dust, Cleo and Las sie.
