J QxSXfftll y -is, ' h i s ii jp 6sni : - I CENTER OF ATTENTION Gypsie, 8-month-old elephant raised on Albers Calf Manna and Suckle, drew a crowd of fans of all ages Tuesday afternoon when she visited the Med ford Feed and Seed company. The 404-pound pachyderm stands nearly 40 inches high and is a native of Bangkok. At the age of two months Gypsie was purchased by Tony Gentry's Animal Training company, Thousand Oaks, Calif., for show purposes. When she arrived she was unable to eat solids and the veterinarian said she was going to die. Her owners then began feeding her the Albers products. Gypsie is currently on a six-week tour on the Pacific coast. ' She gets four gallons of food a day in four feedings. ArjDleeate-Jacksonville "Fire daneer is building up in the Applegate area, and people are cautioned and reminded of the recent proclamation which stated that burning of debris and slash is not permissable," according to Robert Sorber, timber sales offi cer at the Star ranger station. State burning permits are being issued at the ranger station, and Applegate people may pick up their permits now. Tree planting has commenced in the timber, sales area, and there is some set back at higher elevations, because of the snow. The forestry service is also en gaged in brush disposal in the area, and in telephone and trail maintenance. Byron I. Peffly is the new clerk dispatcher, and was hired the latter part of March. The Applegate PTA will meet Friday, April 6, at 8 p.m. at the Applegate school. Guest speaker will be Col. Charles Stafford, Medford, on civilian defense. Final ' plans for the annual "Spring Fling" will be discussed. Mrs. Carl Herriott is chairman of the refreshment committee. Services at the Ruch Commu nity church for Sunday, April 8, include Sunday school, 10 a.m.; worship service, 11 a.m. The sermon will be, "Christ the Creator." One hundred and thirty-one persons attended Easter services t Ruch last Sunday, according to the Rev. Earl Best. Two church services were held sim ultaneously. A junior church for the children was conducted by Mrs. M. C. Morton and Mrs. Earl Best, while Mr. Best addressed the adult congregation. A gift of seven new benches was given to the church recent ly by the Humer ana tsesi cor poration, thus giving the church a 90-seat capacity, Easter Sunday was celebrated with a variety of activities. Many people attended church services, others had Easter din ner with their families and friends. Mrs. Carl Herriott of Applegate, spent Easter Sunday feeding four pigs at two hour intervals. The Herriot's sow, "Pollyanna," had 16 piglets re cently, which has kept Mrs. Her riott rather busy, Bill Shannon is spending his Easter vacation at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Shannon of Applegate. Bill is a junior this year at the Willam ette university. Easter Sunday guests at the home of Mrs. Ethel Haugerud and Oge Hansen of Applegate were Mrs. Elsie Hansen and Ray Tappin of Murphy Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Offen- bacher and their daughter, Dana, had their Easter Sunday dinner in Medford. at the home of Mr. and. Mrs. Russell Killingsworth, who are Mrs. Offenbacher's par ents, Sunday visitors at Mrs. Jack O'Brien's home were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Brady and their son and daughter of Klamath Falls. Other recent visitors were Mr. and Mrs. John Baldwin of Tal ent, and Mrs. Rose Baldwin and Miss Ann O'Brien of Ashland. Yeoman 3c James H. Wo mack came home for the Easter week end to be with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Womack, who live near Ruch. James Wo mack recently returned from Ja pan, and is stationed at Long Beach. A birthday party for 10-year-old Gayle Offenbacher of Jack sonville was held at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Ray Offenbacher of Applegate, on March 30. Guests attending were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Godward, Gayle's great-grandmother, Mrs. M. O'Shea, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Offenbacher, and her brother, Curt, all of Jack sonville. Gayle and Curt remain ed in Applegate and spent the week end with their grand mother. Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Fosseri of Upper Applegate had their East er dinner with her sister, Mrs. C. P. Olsen in Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Offen bacher and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bird of Applegate, celebrated the Birds' sixth wedding anni versary last Saturday by going to dinner at the Tally-ho in Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Farrand of Upper Applegate left Monday morning for a trip to Ferndale, Calif., to visit their daughter, Mrs. Joe Rocha. The Farrands plan to be gone for a week. Recent visitors at the V. E. Taylor residence were Mr. and Mrs; Don Oxborough and family, Everett, Wash. Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Oxborough are sisters. People in this area extend sympathy to Kermit Combes and relatives of the late Mrs. Eve lyn Combes, in their recent be reavement. Miss Deanna Mitchell of Pal mer Creek rd.. left March 28 by Greyhound bus to go to live with her brother, Don McCly- monds at Santa Ana, Calif. Miss Mitchell will attend the Califor nia Air college, starting April 9 The Ruch 4-H Livestock club met at the E. H. Fossen resi dence last Monday. Eleven at tended. Mrs. Leon Offenbacher of Ap plegate, who is a representative of the Red Cross, and Mrs. Jack O'Brien of Applegate, were vis iting the Little Applegate area last Monday. Mrs. O Brien stated that they enjoyed visiting people they hadn't seen in a long time, Albert Jensen of Sterling Creek recently drove his sister, Mrs. Pearl Kitchen of Jackson ville, to Oakland, Wash., on a business trip, and on his return home he picked up Mrs. Kitch en The E. H. Fossens, who have been working for the last three months on a two bedroom house, recently finished the project and the first tenants are Mr. and Mrs. Victor Myers, Salem. Psychology was put into ac tion early Monday morning when Jimmy. Mitchell, who had been dawdling all mornmg, miss ed the school bus, and was seen walking three miles to school. The purpose of this walk was to cure Jimmy of dawdling. Upon arriving home via bus, Jimmy proclaimed, "It was so much fun. I think I'll miss the bus again tomorrow!" HE'S CURED NOW La Crescenta, Calif. (U.R) James Edward Inwood, 87, told police that two "faith healers" he met on a street corner prom ised to cure his physical and spiritual ills by patting his body. They also helped them selves to a S35 payment by lift ing his billfold, he said. Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport 60 Schools at Model UN Meeting Corvallis (U.R)' Some 60 col leges and universities from throughout the West had rep resentatives on hand as the sixth annual model . United Na tions meeting opened on the Oregon State College campus yesterday. The Cyprus issue, Middle East tensions and decisions on admin istration of protectorates all are issues high on the list for de bate before the four-day meeting here. A general assembly meeting last night, with speeches by schools representing each of the big five powers, was the initial event on the agenda. This morn ing all councils and committees and the international court of justice were scheduled to go into their first meetings. Each of the groups participat ing has been assigned to repre sent a particular country. Rep resenting the major powers are: San Jose State, Russia; San Francisco State, U.S.; Lewis and Clark, Great Britain; Southern California, France; and Oregon, China. One student group from Chap man College in Range, Calif., came here in a hearse borrowed from a mortician. They raised $400 expense money by clean ing and painting their student union building. (U.R) Agricul ture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson says Congress had not produced "a sound and constructive bill that can relieve the distressed farm situation this year." Benson criticized rigid high price supports last night before 1000 delegates to the National Hereford Congress at the Uni versity of Arizona. "It was under high rigid price .supports that our present farm problem developed," Ben son said. "In every year but one since 1947, farm income has de clined." He declared that in all these years of the farm income loss until mid-1955, high rigid price supports were in effect. "If high rigid price supports were the an swer to our problem, we would have no problem," he said. Benson saic the Senate's farm bill "bears little resemblance to President Eisenhower's con structive, forward-looking work able program." He said retention of the President's soil bank pro vision was good but the Senate's freezing of price supports for cotton and grains and other fea tures of the bill were not satisfactory. Three Sue Man They Called Father Eugene (U.R) A sister and her two brothers took the stand here yesterday to testify against the man they said they believed until recently to be their father. The suit, directed against Ed ward J. Phillips, Eugene, seeks IT V REPRESENTING American teen-agers, Marilyn Graves, 19, Hebron, Miss., 4-H girl, is en .route to France for international conference in Paris. (International) to reopen probate proceedings on the state of Corinne Phillips. The TOree testified yesterday that it was not until after their mother's death and their subse quent signing of waivers request ed by Phillips that they found out he was not their real father. The three, Thelma Gordon, 29; Gerald Nelson Phillips, and Frederick F. Phillips, contend that the man they had known as their father, approached them with a waiver to the estate immediately following their mother's death. The three estimate the estate value to be between $50,00IJ and $100,000. Carl Wilske, who the trio say is their real father, was located in Champaign, 111. He came to Oregon last January for a re union and yesterday took the stand to testify that his wife and three children had left him 27 years ago and that he had thought them all to be dead until recently. The case is being heard with out a jury in Circuit Court. Beef Consumption 81 Pounds Per Person Chicago (U.R) Americans ate a record 81 pounds of beef per person in 1955 but still fell behind the beef eaters in several other countries, the American Meat Institute said today. About one-quarter of a pound of beef is eaten every day by the HARE TODAY, ETC.
