Portland Jury Hears Mrs. Fong's Escorts Portland U.R) A Circuit court jury here yesterday heard two former escorts of Mrs. Sher ry Fong describe statements by the convicted woman recounting the death of 16-year-old high school girl Diane Hank. The testimony was admitted over defense objections at the second first degree murder trial of Wey Him Fong, husband of the woman who was earlier con victed of second degre murder. Judge Frank L. Lonergan admit ted the testimony of James Whit more and Robert Dayne Rich ards as evidence a crime had been committed. He instructed the jury that statements attrib uted to Sherry Fong were not to be considered as evidence against her husband. Whitmore and Richards testi fied that Mrs. Fong had describ ed the death of her young baby sitter to them when they had dated Fong's wife. Richards is a former undercover agent for the Portland police department and is now a deputy sheriff in Clack amas county. The state contends the Hank girl died of barbiturate poison ing administered. by the Fongs. BEEF STEAK SILENCERS Mission, Tex. (U.P.) That was telecast by the British Broadcasting Com pany in 1930. Four years before that John Logie Baird the "Fa ther of Television" was telecast ing programs from his studio in Soho. , Sidelights All the bajs in the Irish Repub lic are closed on St. Patrick's Day. What is the tallest apartment house in New York City? A. The Ritz Oregon Dairymen Plead (or Price Hike Portland (U.R Representa tives of some 1500 Oregon dairy men made a plea with Portland milk distributors yesterday for a price increase of about one cent per quart for their 3.8 per cent butterfat product. Dairymen told the milk distri butors that record high labor and hay costs, plus freeze- killed pastures, had forced many of them to sell cows to maintain production. Lester Adams, Oregon Milk Producers manager, told the dis tributors that producers should receive a minimum of $6 a hun dred weight for A-grade 3.8 per cent butterfat milk. The group is asking for a 49 cents per hun dred weight price increase. Representatives of the two groups plan further discussion before any action is taken. The "Tops" does not stand for "Take Off Pounds Society" as frequently alleged. It is "Take Off Pounds Sensibly." Tuesday, April 3, 1956 Practical Extraction of Water From Ocean StiEi Far Away Washington (U.R) The gov ernment still has a long way to go in its effort to develop a cheap, large-scale method for tak ing the salt out of sea water. "It won't come overnight," said David S. Jenkins, the man in charge of the research. But, he said, progress is being made and new experiments will lower the costs more and more. At present about 20 exper imental projects are under way. If even one of them is successful it could solve many of the na tion's growing water-shortage problems. Some of the principles for ex tracting pure water from sea and brackish inland waters have been known for hundreds of years. The problem is to get the cost down to the point where the process is practical for cities and industries. Research Extended Jenkins said one method now being tested produces drinking water for about $100 an acre foot. He estimated costs will have to be scaled down to around $100 an acre foot before municipalities will be interested. Industry might be able to pay a little more in some localities where water now is particularly scarce. Congress has authorized $10, 000,000 for long-range research on water extraction methods. The program, conducted by the Interior Department, recently was extended to 1963. Among the methods being tested, Jenkins said, distillation CHILE AGREES TO ENVOY Santiago, Chile (U.R) The Foreign Ministry announced Monday that Chile has agreed to the appointment of Cecil Bur ton Lyon as new U.S. ambassa dor. He will succeed Willard L. Beulao, ambassador here since November, 1953, who is being shifted to Argentina. YBNG! tv. Ky. It's the Town's Biggest Market Place - - Phone 2-6141 Medford Mail Tribune now seems to offer the most promise for the cheap conver sion of sea water. An "electric membrane process" shows the most promise now for convert ing brackish water. The distillation process in volves the use of heat to trans form the sea water to vapor, leaving the salt behind. One dis tillation process showing great promise, Jenkins said, is "solar heat." , This method involves collect ing the sun's energy under a glass enclosure which causes thi saline water to vaporize on the overhead glass. It is collected as it runs off the glass to a trough. Freezing Controlled Another method is freezing. Since pure water will freeze first, the method involves con trolling the rate of freeze and then removing the ice contain ing the pure water. Another process is called the "osmotic method." Use of a mem brane, something like a sieve which passes pure water but fil ters out the salt. APPLES Bring your own containers PINNACLE PACKING CO. llth and Front Sts. or 220 N. One worker wrote the Interior Department warning that it might ruin some scenic coastal views. But Jenkins is unconcerned. He said it will take umpteen years to lower the sea level even a fraction of an inch. And large scale use of sea water is still some time off. PACIFIC INDUSTRIAL 16 S. Central Phone 3-5308 CI0US mm mi
