Ashland Firms Low
On Armory Bids;
Federal Study Set
Salem Wiley company and
L. C. McLaughlin, Ashland, was
apparent low bidder for con
struction of the Oregon National
Guard armory at Medford, Lt.
Col. William tl. Adams, guard
contracting officer, has an
nounced. Wiley and McLaughlin sub
mitted a basic figure of $338,
988 for the job in which the fed
eral government will partici
pate, and $61,541 for work the
state will finance.
Claiming error in his bid was
S. Ferche, Roseburg, who fig
ured $385,445 in each category.
He contended that the figure
was for the entire job rather
than for separate portions.
H. G. Carl Construction com
pany, Salem, bid $356,283 for
the federal aid portion and $63,
054 on the state portion. Donald
M. Drake company, Portland,
asked $358,600 for the federal
aid work and $61,000 for the
state portion. Jones and Brooks,
Medford, bid $377,600 and $63,
500. Largest alternate was one on
the state work list for elimina
tion of folding bleachers. All
five bidder firms offered to de
duct from $51,500 to $52,000.
Plans were prepared by Kee
ney and Edson, Medford archi
tects. The bids, including
Ferche's statement, will be con
sidered by the federal government.
Brundage Sworn in
As Budge! Director

F. Brundage was sworn in to
day his 64th birthday as di
rector of the bureau of the
budget.
He succeeds retiring Rowland
R. Hughes, 60, who resigned be
cause of "personal obligations."
Brundage moves up from the
bureau's deputy director's post
to the $17,500-a-year job.
Brundage is the sixth director
since 1946 of the budget bureau
and the third in this administra
tion. In his new post, one of the
most demanding in government,
he will supervise the spending
of billions of dollars each year
by dozens of government agen
cies. Brundage, of Long Valley,
N.J., declined to discuss his
views on his new post with reporters.
Alcoa Workers Get
Increase Jn Wages
Pittsburgh U.R) A new
wage pattern, granting increases
of from seven to 30 cents an
hour, went into effect today at
plants of the Aluminum Com
pany of America.
The wage pattern affected
nearly 17.000 Alcoa workers and
will cost the company $1,528,000
a year. It was based upon cur
rent wage brackets and job clas
sifications negotiated for the ba
sic steel industry several years
ago.
The new Alcoa program con
tains 27 wage brackets ranging
from $1,745 to $2,905 an hour.
About 11,000 employees receiv
ed wage hikes of seven to 30
cents an hour retroactive to last
Aug. 1.
The other 6,000 employees
either are now receiving above
scale rates or have already been
granted the new pay increases.
Washing automobiles is big
business in the U. S. More than
100.000.000 customers during
1954 paid $120,000,000 for the
service, the industry says.
