luried Treasure fee Pewter Dipper Worth $1,000 Used as Ashtray When I last saw the pewter dipper it wag being used as an ashtray. I remember it well, be cause it was while I was grind ing out a cigarette in its bowl that I first noticed the "touch." The "touch," the maker's mark, consisted of a traditional anchor with the initials "D" and "M" just above the flukes. I asked Fred, owner of the piece, how he had come by it and whose mark it was. It had been left him by his wife who had died two years before, he said, but the identity of the own er was unknown to him. I offer ed to look the piece up when in town the following week and took down a description. It was over a month before I was able to get back to Fred's again, but when I did so, I was delighted at the prospect of tell ing him what I had learned about his dipper. The instrument was a rarity beyond a doubt, and if he cared to turn it into money, he would have no difficulty in getting a aizable sum. COMET PATTEHN PIECES HAVE VALUE TO COLLECTORS Dinner was almost over be fore I became aware of the na ture of the butter dish handle. The knob handle of the butter dish looked like the head of George Washington. "Isn't that the head of George Washington," I asked, feeling the need of corroboration. "Yes, it Is the head of George Washington. Furthermore . . ." and away Pauline, my hostess, went on the story of her acquisi tion. She had come across the dish in a salvage shop where she bought it for 50 cents. She had bought it because of the head. She thought it might be interest ing to start a collection of things with a Washington motif. When she got it home, a friend of hers pounced on it as a 'SMALL RAILROAD PAMPHLET Jack looked completely dis gusted with life. "There are times when I think I'll quit the book business," he said, "and take up something easy, like selling insurance." .1 asked what was wrong. "About an hour ago, an old fellow came in here to sell some books, and I bought that stack there. For $5." I looked at the stack. They were good bread - and - butter items, and Jack certainly had Yiot paid too much for them. I said so. ; "Oh, sure," he said. "I'm not complaining about that. But ;here's what happened. When the old guy laid these down on the "counter there was another one on top of the pile, but that was book that he stuck right back in his pocket Wouldn't even let me make him an offer for it." "The book was one I never saw before," he said, "but I would have been glad td give 23 MACHINIRY and TRACTORS ANNUAL SPUING MACHINERY SALE TUESDAY. The TdowI was a good three inches deep and the inside top diameter just a trifle more. The sides of the bowl swelled gently. The only ornamentation was a beaded edge. In other words, the instrument was an excellent example of what must have been a most useful item m the early days. It was certainly early. The touch established that. The piece was made by David Melville who died at Newport, R.I., in 1793. Fred became quite excited "W here is the confounded thing," he said, looking around And then, "How much did you say it's worth?" When I told him that $1,000 would not be too much to ask for such an item, he really be gan looking for it, presently en listing my aid. But we never found it. Probably someone else had recognized it for what it was and made off with it. "piece of the peacock eye pat tern," pleading with her to sell it. But Pauline refused to do so until she had investigated. Here refusal was wise. The pattern is also known as the "Horn of Plenty" or "Comet pattern, the latter because it was originated in 1835 right aft er the appearance of Halley's comet. The design consists mainly of round eyes of clear bright glass against a background of fine stippling. Almost all pieces are of clear glass but a few have been found in yellow or opaque. All pieces in that pattern have a value to collectors, but the butter dish with a Washington handle, instead of the corn shaped or flattened type is tops. The two I have since seen have sold for $175 and $200. HIGHLY VALUABLE ITEM him $500 for it if he had only let me." "That book was the 'Traveler's Guide to the New Gold Mines in Kansas and Nebraska, with a Description of the Shortest and Most Direct Route from Chi cago." "It's only a little pamphlet, actually," he went on. "Sixteen pages, about 3V4 by 5 inches, and probably it was issued by the Chicago, Burling and Quincy railroad. It was printed in New York, 1859." "I never heard of it," I said. "How much is it worth?" "Well , I, can't find any record of it selling," said Jack, "but that doesn't matter. Between a couple of customers I've got I'd have no difficulty in getting at least $1,000 from one of them. After all, there can't be more than two or three of these items in existence."
