INDUSTRIAL LEAGUE American Legion lost three games to the Telephone Em ployees Friday night, but man aged to hold the lead, since Rich field Oil dropped three to Don na Timber. (U.R) The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Apprentices defeated the Ship builders from Mare Island Naval Yard of Vallejo, Calif., 85-74, here Friday night to win the best-of-three basketball series. The win, Bremerton's second in a row after losing the first game, kept the Masters , and Foremen's trophy here another year and prevented the Califor nians from retiring the prize. Under present rules between the rival yards, the team that first scored 14 wins gets permanent possession. (Phog) Allen has coached his last basketball game at Kansas, but a lineup of suc cessors indicated Saturday that his style of ball would continue. Allen, 70, was forced into re tirement Friday because "of his age. , His successor, Dick Harp, the Kansas freshman coach, said the style would continue as always and "I shall always look to Dr. Allen for guidance and counsel." Harp, 38, was a standout on Allen's 1940 NCAA runnerup team, and has been assisting the veteran mentor here since 1949. He was given a one-year con tract at $7500 and officially will take over the reins June 30. Jerry Waugh, 29, who also Phoenix Mitt-men Lose to Prospect Phoenix high school, in its first practie game of the season, lost 4 to 13 to Prospect base ballers Thursday. HAH 3610 Tillamook Hoop Coach Resigns Tillamook U.R) Barney Swanson has resigned as head basketball coach at Tillamook High school. Principal Jack Hornback said Swanson had requested reassign ment in the Tillamook school system. The coach, who headed the Chessemaker basketball squad for three years, has been a teacher in Tillamook for nine years. Ba$sgft Signs 1956 Contract With Browns Cleveland, Ohio (U.R) The Cleveland Browns announced Saturday that fullback Maurice Bassett has signed his 1956 con tract. Basaett, the Brown's regular fullback two years ago, said he already is conditioning himself for the battle to regain the first string post from Ed Modzelewski. He said he was working as a mail carrier in Cleveland in order to keep his weight down. Bassett gained 174 yards in 38 attempts in 1955. Commission to Free Salmon in Klaskanine Portland (U.R) The Oregon Fish commission reported Satur day it is releasing 600,000 young silver salmon in the Klaskanine river. The commission also is plant ing some 100,000 brood silvers in the South Coos river. Planted last week in Foley creek were 77,000 brood silvers. (U.R) Ralph De Palma, one of the greatest race drivers of all time, died Saturday at the age of 73 after a lengthy illness. ; De Palma was an active driv er for 27 years and won 2557 or 2889 races in which he com peted.
