ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribune Correspondent Washington Attorney Gen eral Herbert Brownell said Wednesday that he "certainly dH not tell a prominent Repub lican or anyone else" that Inter ior Secretary Douglas McKay has not been successful in com batting '"give-away" charges a consideration which this report er earlier was told led in part to the unexpected exit of McKay from the Cabinet and into the GOP senatorial race in Oregon March 9. Brownell said that "McKay was urged to run by top Re publicans here because they re garded him as '"the strongest man to beat Wayne Morse." "He has been a fine, effective member of the Eisenhower team," Brownell said in an in terview. "The President was very sorry to lose him." Disturbed by Reports Calling this reporter to his office, Brownell said he was disturbed by published reports in Oregon which said he had re marked privately that "party of ficials here were not satisfied with the way McKay had met political criticism from Demo cratic opponents. Competent, Versatile Mrs. Hopkins said "deputies who are highly competent and versatile are necessary to a prop er and efficient handling of all responsibilities of the office, and department heads must have see the secretary leave the cabi net as others were to see him running against Senator Morse. "I feel that the so-called give away charge of the opposition is a lot of hot air, said Brownell, "and that his record as secretary of interior will stand extensive scrutiny and will turn out to be a record which will be very gratifying to the country of which he himself can be very proud." Asked whether there was any desire on the part of the Eisen hower administration to have McKay leave the Cabinet as this presidential election campaign got underway, Brownell replied: 'T don't think that entered into it at all." Brownell said he was asked by Shermar Adams and the GOP national commit tee for advice on whether Mc Kay should be urged to resign and tackle Morse. Knew Nothing of Poll 'T thought, he should do it," Brownell said, explaining that he concurred in the feeling that McKay would be the strongest candidate against Morse. But he said he knew nothing of the poll taken by the national com mittee which. McKay last week said convinced, him that Oregon citizens favored him over other GOP contenders for the Senate. No Evacuation Nor can there be any civilian Chicago Police Sift Ashes To Check Story In Slaying Chicago (U.R) Police sifted rain-soaked ashes found in a for est preserve today to see if they back up a deaf mute's weird story of the murder of three young boys. The deaf mute, 52-year-old Herman Rohlfes, has told in crude picture language that he saw a short, bearded man fight Budget Saving, special qualifications and train ing. I was quite sure he was the best known candidate with his record as governor and secretary of the interior. I didn't know of any one in the state who could match that." Brownell said he knew of the proposal put to McKay by Adams and Leonard Hall, GOP national chairman, "only a day or two before it came out." He said he did not know what was said at the White House when McKay called on Eisenhower March 3 and then flew to Oregon to file for the Senate. Ideas Held Inconsistent As for the report that party leaders thought McKay was vul nerable to criticism and there fore wanted to ditch him, Brown ell said: "If these charges had taken hold at all, they would have taken hold in the Pacific North west. And if that were so, I don't see how he would have made the strongest candidate against Morse. The two ideas are just inconsistent. I think he will make a powerful candidate." But everyone who knows him agrees that Rohlfes has never been known, to lie. On the night of Oct. 17, Rohlfes and his brother, Edward, slept in a truck in Robinson's Woods. Through wild arm wavings, grimaces, and gestures inter preted by sign-reading experts, Rohlfes told this story: He a-voke shortly after mid night and saw a short man with a heavy growth of beard stand ing at the door of the truck. He had a knife. He began pounding at the door and Rohlfes, terrified, locked it. Then he saw the same man struggling with a naked boy some distance away. The boy fell. The man lifted his arm and then dropped it when he saw the lad was dead. . Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport National Commercial Tests Set at Talent Talent Some 23 students are expected to enter the national commercial contest at Talent High school next week, Princi pal E. A. Vinckel has announced. Talent students will be enter ing for the 10th consecutive years in typing, shorthand and bookkeeping. Last year, Talent students won first place in be ginning and advanced short hand, , and have won places since 1951. Gordon Thoreson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Thoreson, Tal ent, won' first in shorthand the ory and dictation-transcription last year. Miss Maxine Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Johnson, Talent, was second place in national honors. Both are seniors and have entered the present contest. More than 8,000 students from high schools throughout the country are expected to com pete. Oregon state civil service ex aminations for sewn graduating senior commerce majors are scheduled for April 18 at Tal ent, Vinckel said. Seniors will be tested for clerk stenographer. The dust and snows were keepsakes of a massive storm which drove eastward today. Roads were dangerously ice coated from the Great Lakes, to central Pennsylvania and parts of New York State got a mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow. Southwest Winds Dying The raking winds which churned up a million-dollar dust storm in the Southwest were dy ing today. But more winds were needed to blow away the dirty haze in the sky. Suspended dust was reported over western and central Texas and parts of Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. Visibility was still lowin Texas and forecasters didn't expect clear skies until tonight. Storm Leaves 'Drifts' The dust storm also left "drifts" several feet high along highways. At Dalhart, Tex., housewives complained that the dust was oily and stuck to their furniture. Officials had not totalled the dust storm's damage. Snow plows battled to clear northern Minnesota, roads under still-falling snow todav and work crews turned out to repair nundreds of snapped telephone lines. Schools and Stores Close At Superior,.
