Dayton Encounters Louisville In National Invitational Final By JOHN GRIFFIN New York UP.) Now the National Invitation Tournament heads into the nationally-televised final round Saturday after noon with the big, burning ques tion: Can Louisville beat Dayton a third straight time with the title at stake? Tfce odds-men say "No," and make top-seeded Dayton a very slight favorite. But a lot of experts say "Yes," and tab second-seeded Louisville as the coming champion. A crowd of 16,125 that saw both score easy victories in Thursday n i g h t's semi - final round at Madison Square Gar den came away baffled. First they watched Louisville pull 22 points in front and breeze home, 89-79, over St. Joseph's of Phila delphia. Dayton would have to match that. But the Flyers more than matched this showing by crush ing St. Francis of Brooklyn in the other semi-final, 89-58. Trail ing by 20-19 after 12 minutes of play, Dayton turned the game into a shambles by outscoring the Terriers in the next 17 Vz minutes by an incredible 44-9 count. The Dayton bench-warmers ran out the final 12 minutes. Baseball THURSDAY EXHIBITIONS By United Press Baltimore (A) 8, Cleveland (A) 6 New York (N) 8. Chicago (N) 1 Boston (A) 2. Art Litchman and his staff of University of Oregon publicity men and statis ticians have done another bang up job of compiling and preserv ing the records of the tourney and of making them available to the public in souvenir booklet form. The book is well worth the half-a-buck asked. MEDFORD TOP SCORER There are a good number of points of interest to Medford fans. Among the foremost: The Black Tornado was the high scoring team of the tourna ment in running ' up its 258 points in its second place team finish. Medford was one of, eight of the 16 tourney teams to play four games. In total tourney scoring Medford exceeded . by 16 points the championship Franklin Quak ers who had 242 counters. Eu gene was next with 239. Med ford's game average of 64.5 was also high. SECOND IN AVERAGES In field goal shooting in the tournament the Black Tornado's overall record of .368 was second only to the Pendleton mark of - CALL -LININGER'S TO BUY TO TRY - C doz. l ma. 12TH and CENTRAL Crater Lake Motors, Fortune touch off the 44-9 spree, and Palmer was called by St. Fran cis Coach Danny Lynch "the guy who broke us." Charley Tyra, 6-8, tuned up for Saturday's duel with Uhl by zipping in 29 points against St. Joseph's. He led the Cardinals in a surge to a 45-27 halftime lead. St. Joseph's battled back to trail by nine during the second half but that was all. By DICK JEWETT Mail Tribune Sports Editor .374. The Medfordites were also second high with .627 average compared to McLoughlin's .636. Team offensive statistics show the Tornado with its 175 re bounds fifth in that department to Franklin's 200. On the nega tive side Medford was the heavy fouling team with 84 personals. Opponents scored 232 points against Medford for an average of 58 points per game which ranked the Tornado ninth in team defense. Rivals made a .331 average in field shots against the Medford club and an aver age fo .526 of the free tries. GROSSENBACHER SHINES Bjarne Jensen, 6-9 Franklin Quaker, had the most field goals in a tourney game, 12, and in the tournament, 39. He had the top number of re bounds in a game, 26, and for the tournament, 91. Eddie Grossenbacher, Mil waukie set a new tourney record with 22 out of 23 free shots for a .957 average. His 18 consecutive free tosses was also a new mark. MUCH INFORMATION The foregoing has been a hur ried perusal of the booklet, there is loads of other information, some of which has been reported previously by this writer. There are pictures of Medford and other teams in action, individual pictures of tourney all-stars, in cluding Bob Tisdel and Dick Mc Laughlin of Medford, a play by play of the final game, statistics of every game of the tourney, individual and team records of the 1956 tourney and for all time. A complete bracket shows the progress of the 1956 action. We say again its well worth the money and can be had by writ ing to Tournament Booklet, Mc Arthur Court, University of Ore gon, Eugene. Dobbins, nimself a candidate for mayor, said the committee would meet tonight to draw up the resolution ordering the mayor to demand the E-R com mission resignation. He added: "Should this move fail, our only other recourse is to insti gate the recall movement against the mayor and appoint a man in his place who will ask for the resignations. An announcement by the E-R commission this week that an architectural firm is to submit plans for various East Side sites for the $8,000,000 center prompted Dobbin to say: "This means only a study of the Rose City Golf course site, And this is too beautiful a site to be made into a center."
