Douglas Shepherd is the local representative of the guild. Lew Christensen was a mem ber of the Ballet Caravan which toured America in the Thirties and points out that American ballet at first dominated by the Russians, with their romantic type of presentation, is now dominated by Americans with the first real period of classicism which ballet has enjoyed. Mr. Christensen states that what he terms "second genera tion" ballet in this nation is represented chiefly by two com panies, George Blanchine's New York City ballet, and his San Francisco Ballet company. Flower Color, Harmonies Said Important in Garden Abraham Lincoln Expert Misses 'Money' Question New York CU.R) A Georgian expert on Abraham Lincoln last night became the first person to miss the S64,000 question on the television quiz show of that name. Robert Edward Bennett, a store clerk of Kingsland, Ga., and his "guest expert," Ralph G. Newman, proprietor of the Abraham Lincoln bookshop in Chicago, went down on the first part of a complicated multi-part question for the show's jackpot. ...the shape of things to come $12.95 It's the smart new "little heels" that women find so comfortable . . . yet are so smart in styling . . . Patent . .Flax . .Wedgewood. 21 N. CENTRAL By EDNA MANDEVILLE Any true flower lover knows how important color is to a gar den, and how the just right bal ance of colors can make your garden sing. In this column I plan to give you a few helpful tips on the right colors to pick for a harmoneous effect. Of course whole books could be (and are) written just about color in the garden, but this is no place for a lengthy dis course, especially when color is so much a matter of individual taste. Before I scare off any prospective flower gardeners by over-stressing the importance of color harmony, I do want to say that it's not quite as vital as it might seem. Even a garden planned without a thought to color harmony is still a beauti ful thing, thanks to nature. But as you become more fa miliar with flowers, it's nat ural to develop a liking for some colors more than others. Thus the following suggestions of different color varieties and color combinations should prove valuable to the beginner as well as the more experienced home gardener. Here are the varieties most often used to produce a parti cular color: Whites: Snow cloth alyssum, arabis, white cap aster, gypso phila, snow-in-summer, balcony white petunia, white verbena, purity zinnia. Pinks: Los Angeles aster, pinkie bachelor's button, pink queen cleome, pink larkspur, rose of heaven petunia, balcony rose petunia, sweet briar poppy, rosebud lilliput zinnia, Miss Willmott giant zinnia. Yellows: Gold dust alyssum, sunshine calendula, cosmos yel low flare, sunburst coreopsis, yellow pigmy marigold, sunny marigold, yellow supreme mari gold, scotch marigold, mammoth mum marigold, golden gleam nas turtium,, golden globe nastur tium, buttercup snapdragon, sungold sunflower, daffodil zin nia, creeping zinnia, star dust fantasy zinnia. Oranges: Cosmos orange flare and fiesta, orange king calen- Jiffy-Knit Jiffy-knit this little cape in a pretty diamond pattern. Have it in two graceful lengths for day time and evening fashions! Reds: Red boy bachelor's but ton, sparkler carnation, torea dore celosia, scarlet flax, Jeru salem cross, scarlet gleam nas turtium, fire chief petunia, Gen eral Dodds petunia, balcony red petunia, American Legion pop py, bonfire salvia, St. John's fire salvia, scarlet defiance ver bena, little red riding hood zin nia, cherry queen zinnia, me teor zinnia wildfire fantasy zinnia, Will Rogers zinnia. Blues: Ageratum, blue bird an chusa, navy blue aster, blue boy and jubilee gem bachelor's but ton, balloon flower, blue bells of California, delphinium, peren nial flax, forget-me-not, sky blue or dark blue larkspur, crystal palace lobelia, nemophila, heav enly blue or dark blue .petunia, heavenly blue or blue cockade scabiosa. Before I list some of the color combinations, let me pause to mention one aspect of flower gardening that often baffles the beginners. This is the problem of just when to plant all these different varieties. In the past, unfortunately, instructions on most flower seed envelopes have been too general to be very helpful. Now, however, the seed packets of the Mandeville & King company solve this prob lem by carrying a map on the back, showing just when to plant in any locality.' To return to the color com binations, I must stress again that this is largely a matter of personal taste. But I list here some of the most tested and popular pairings: Rose of heaven petunia bordered by bluecap ageratum, sky blue larkspur with exquisite pink larkspur, golden west marigold bordered by balcony purple petunia, scar let defiance verbena bordered by snow cloth alyssum, orange king calendula bordered by crys tal palace lobelia, bluebird an chusa bordered by golden gleam nasturtium, real gold marigold bordered by firmament forget-me-nots, St. John's fire salvia bordered by snowstorm petunia. Any of these beautiful com binations will present a truly compelling spectacle. Both be ginners and experienced garden ers might do well to try one or more in their flower gardens this year. To Speak Rogue-Elk B. Sam Taylor will be guest speaker at a meeting of Rogue-Elk Home Extension unit to held Thursday, March 28 at the home of Mrs. Ranald Axtell. A noon potluck meal will be served. Fancy Table Linens Return to Fashion New York 0J.R) Fancy table linens are back. These "art" linens include those with Madeira embroidery, drawn work, hem-stitching, ap plique, crochet, tatting and fringed or scalloped edges. Actually the phrase table lin en no longer designates the ma terial because the "linen' may be cotton, rayon, no-iron nylon, sheer nylon, a quick drying ray-on-dacron blend, or linen. It also can be in the traditional white or ecru, or in a whole range of pastel shades. Whatever the type, make sure before you purchase that it will launder well. New linens need washing before use for appear ance and sanitary reasons. Td remove stain from stamping ink use a weak bleach solution and then launder. The Cleanliness Bureau said that all but the very fragile em broidered pieces can be machine washer. Some items, however, are safer if put into a mesh laun dry bag or pillow case for protection.
