Friday, March IS, 1SSS Nearoes Schedule SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Picket of Houston University Event Houston, Tex. (U.R) Hous ton's Negro leaders said today 200 Negroes will picket Texas Southern university Sunday when Gov. Allan Shivers speaks at the inauguration of a new university president. Attorney Francis L. Williams, president of the Houston chap ter of the National Association o for the Advancement of Color ed People, said "We intend go ing about this picketing in a prudent and lawful manner." Shivers, a leader of Texas conservative Democrats, has vigorously backed the doctrine of interposition to stop "federal encroachment" on states' rights Shivers will deliver the main speech at the inauguration of Dr. S. M. Nabrit as president of the all-Negro university. The NAACP attacked the governor because of his "publicly declar ed views on integration in pub lic schools." Thursday night about 100 Ne groes attending a meeting in the small Mt. Zion Missionary church and voted to picket Shiver'. appearance. The meet ing was called by the executive board of the Houston NAACP Williams asked those present if they felt the boycott should be "active or passive." The NAACP had earlier urged Hous ton Negroes to stay away from the appearance, but there was no talk of picketing until Thursday night. Williams said the NAACP be lieved "Gov. Shivers has a right to say anything he desires to say," but that "we also have a right to boycott his speech and influence other people not to attend and listen to a man who has publicly declared he will do everything in his power to abridge the rights of the Negro citizens and their children in - this state." Meafcufters to Vote On Wage Increase Portland (U.R) Meatcut ters were asked today to vote on a wage increase proposal made to try to head off a threat ened strike. The Independent Meat Deal ers association, following an all day negotiating session, offered a $5 per week increase now and an additional $3 Dec. 31. Also included was an increase in em ployer payments in health and welfare benefits. The Meatcutters Union had asked for a 21V4 cent hourly wage increase, which would boost wages to $96 a week. The management offer would make wages $92.50 now and $95.50 as of Dec. 31. William Lubersky, attorney and negotiator for employers, said "any increase is going to have to result in an immediate increase in meat prices." In Robin Hood's day, taxes wert paid in crops...
