CHAPMAN Hornbrook-;-Several of their iSfildren and grandchildren gath ered on March 11 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Wright to . bid them "Welcome home!" They had returned several days earlier after spending the past few months visiting in the Middle West and South. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. E. Ekwall and children from , Hilt; Charles Wright and two , daughters from Happy Camp; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Wright and son from Ashland; and from . Medford, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Wright and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wright. Mrs. Frank Lowe returned re cently from Klamath Falls where - the had been visiting her sister, Mrs. Joe Gilmore. Mrs. Grace Spannaus died Fri day, March 3, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. - and Mrs. Ernest Palone in Klam athv Falls. Mrs. Spannaus was born at Bogus, and lived most of her life in this area. - She was the youngest daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Bing Grubb. She is survived by three sisters, - Mfs. Mary Gardner of Copco, CiSlif., Mrs. Jennie Hearn of Klamath Falls; and Mrs. Edith - Anderson of New York, and by one brother Tom Grubb of Klamath Falls; by Mrs. Palone; a son, Ernest Spannaus of Hilt; three grandchildren and three great - grandchildren. Funeral services were hel in Klamath Falls on March 5, with interment in the family plot in the Henley Hornrook cerftetery. Prima Ballerina Marina Svet lova and her dance troupe were presented March 9 at the Yreka High school auditorium under the auspices of the Siskiyou Community Concerts associa tion. Those from Hornbrook who attended included Mrs. W. H. Farmer, Mrs. . Loren Cummins, Mrs. Alec Rutledge and daugh ters, Mary Lee and Ann, Mrs. J-aura Swinnerton, and Mrs. Hen ' ley Clawson, whose daughter, Mrs. Joy Seaman of Yreka ' joined her at the concert. Word has been received of the birth of a son on March 5 to Mi, and Mrs. Phillip York of Redding, Calif. Mrs. York is the former ... Annabelle Grover of Hornbrook. Maternal grandpar ents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Graves of Hilt. .At the home of Mrs. Hilda - Cooley on the Ager road, Mrs. Stan Cooley was hostess March 9 at a layette shower honoring Mrs. Reginald Jesperson. Beside ' a number of friends from Yreka, those attending from Hornbrook . were Mrs. Alan Jesperson, moth - er-in-law of the honoree, Mrs. Charles Brunk, Mrs. Ernest Pick r ard Sr., Mrs. Ernest Pickard Jr., Mrs.1 Tom Collister arid Mrs. Ralph Bennett. Several others .from here who were unable to attend also sent gifts. A.rE- Santee of Springfield, Ore., is a visitor at the home of his sister, Mrs. Ben Bennett. O L. W. " Bennett and family moved recently from Richmond, Va., and are living in Ashland, .- Ore. Bennett is associated with O , his brother, Ralph, in the oper ation of the Black Mountain Lumber Co. here. Mr. and Mrs. Allen Gregory of Pomona, Calif., spent several days last week , visiting' at the home of their son and daughter r in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Al Greg ory. The younger Gregory is " principal of the local gramma ' school. The qccasion of his par , ents visit was the fourth birth day of Kathy Gregory. The sen ior Gregorys were guests on Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bear, and in the evening the three couples played cards to gether celetB-ating another birth day, that of Mrs. Allen Gregory. ' The regular meeting of the Hornbrook Grange last Friday O was well attended. Siskiyou County Sheriff Al Cottar was guest speaker. He also presente'd ' some enlightening pictures on Civil Defense. Meetings are held the second and fourth Fridays of each month at the Grange hall, with the next meeting scheduled for March 23. This is to be a "fun" night. Mrs. Bertha Bradley is in charge of the kitchen this month, and Mrs." Jack Nelson and Mrs. Bob Crawford, enter tainment committee. Hornbrook troop of Boy Scouts led by Bob Crawford, assistant scoutmaster, took a hike on Sun day up to Horn's peak and back? Benny Crawford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Crawford, injured his ankle Monday evening in the basketball game with Hilt. Visiting last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Johnson, who recently moved here from Oakland, Calif., were their nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson and three children from Portland, Ore. A number of people from here were seen shopping in Medford last week end, among them being Mr. and Mrs. George Wright, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Jeter,' Mr. and Mrs. Harry Chapman,' Mr. and Mrs. Frank Freitas :and three sons and Mrs. Tom Watt Jr.' Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bear have sold a 39-acre portion of 'their ranch which lies between Old Highway 99 and Cottonwood Creek. The buyer was Dick Ap plegate of Happy Camp. Cub Scout Leaders To Attend Meeting At Hedrick High More than 125 Cub Scout lead ers are expected to attend the council-wide C u b b e r ' s "Pow Wow" Sunday at Hedrick junior high school, according -to John J. Patton, Crater Lake Area council training chairman. The Cubber's Pow Wow will open at 2 p.m. Sunday with a Midway, featuring games; stunts and exhibits in carnival style put on by many of the Cub packs in the Big Pines district (Jack son county). Director of the Midway will be Jim Johnston, Cubmaster of pack 6, Washing ton school. All den mothers, Cub masters and pack committeeman will attend this activity. Following 'the Midway, Cub leaders will divide into groups, each selecting one of the four special sessions. These sessions will include administration, led by Andrew Schmidt, neighbor hood commissioner from Grants Pass; ceremonies and stunts, led by Ward' Lampkin, cubrrfaster, and Harold Snodgrass, chairman of ' Pack 5, Jefferson school; games section, -Jim Grigsby, neighborhood commissioner in Medford, and Fred Kitterman, training chairman in Grants Pass: and tinkershop, and handicraft.-led by H. S. "Mike". Mor ris, Cub training - chairman of the Big Pines district, Medford. Each Cub pack has been -asked to bring a game or demonstra- tion to be used in the Midway or tinkershop., Each pack" will also have at least one representative in each of the four sections. McKay Says Change In Education Needed New York (U.P.) Interior Secretary Douglas McKay., said last night the "philosophy, of education in this country needs a revitalization." McKay said Russia's stepped up educational campaign in, re cent years has been turning out almost twice the number of scientists and engineers as ,this country. - - "Our schools are woefully in-adequ- " McKay said.' He said the fault is' not that of the edu cational system alone;, the blame must rest upon the shoulders of almost everyone in America." McKay said the nation could use at least .50,000 more engin eers immediately.. . Portland Attorney Enters Guilty Plea Portland-(U.P.) C l.a u d e M Johns Jr., 43, Portland attorney who served as a temporary cir cuit judge in 1954 and 1955, has pleaded guilty in Federal Court to file federal income tax returns. . . He was released on his own recognizance pending a proba tion office investigation.. James Morrell, assistant U. S. district attorney, said the information to which Johns pleaded charged failure to file in 1952 and 1953. COMMITTEE MEETING Klamath Falls (U.R) The Oregon Legislature's Interim Committee on Highways will meet here next Tuesday. Sen. Warre.i McMinimee of Tillamook- heads the committee.
