EIGHT MEDFORD. (OREGON) Subject of Fine Funeral Walks Into Friend's Home Merced, Calif :U.R It was a real fine funeral that Bill Hawkins' pals put on for him. Oni1 of his grieving friends donated a suit so Bill could fef; buried in style. Others chipped in to buy a burial plot. And all of his buddies attended the Masonic funeral services on Feb. 23. The only thing wrong was that Bill wasn't dead. They buried another man. The mixup came to light when the 74-year-old laborer strolled into the home of his friend of 30 years, Charles A. Bunch, Friday night. Bunch was one of the friends that had identified a man struck down and killed by an automobile Feb. 19, as Bill Hawkins. More than somewhat startled. Bunch called Coroner Kenneth Riggs who was even more disturbed. He had the dead man exhumed and his fingerprints sent to the state capitol at Sacramento for identification. As for Hawkins, he was "pretty shook up," said Riggs. He had been away on a trip to Sacramento. Racketeer's 'Front Man1 Shot While In Parked Car " Newark, N.J. (U.R) An al leged labor racketeer's "front man," who has turned state's witness m a New York City in vestigation, was shot four times in the head early Saturday while sitting in his parked car with a woman. The critical wounding of Louis B. Saperstein was Newark's sec ond gangland shooting in four days. Police were unable to link the two slaying attempts, how ever. Police said Saperstein's shoot ing occurred a few hours after his around-the-clock bodyguard left his side when the labor fig ure said he planned to have Six local People Seek Election to Convention Seats Five Jackson county people are candidates for election as delegates to the Republican Na tional convention in San Fran cisco next August. State At Large Two Medford men are candi dates for the GOP convention, running from the state at large. They are Attorney William Mc Allister, a former state legisla tor, and Robert A. Bash, chairman of the county GOP central committee; County Judge Rodney Keating, Ashland, and Medford Attorn ey Robert R. Dickey. All have filed their candidac ies with the secretary of state's office in Salem. . Press Screening Today of TV Show Hollywood (U.R) The NBC television network will hold a private press screening today of the controversial "Medic" film showing the birth of a' baby by Caesaren section. The showing of the film orig inally was scheduled for tonight but was cancelled because NBC officials in New York believed it "would be unsuitable for home audiences." Frank La Tourette, producer of "Medic." claimed the cancel lation was the result of a writ en protest which he said was "inspired" by Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York. But spokesmen for NBC and " the church denied the cardinal has anything to do with the cancel lation. La Tourette and James Mosh- er, co-producer and writer of "Medic," wired Cardinal Spell- man saying they considered the action "an unwarranted and Qry disappointing use of your high office." TtK Rev. Timothy J. Flynn, director of radio and television for the Archdiocese of New York, had written NBC protest ing the scheduled program on grounds the film was on sex ed ucation, a subject which, he said should be handled by the church and home. Bodyguard Assigned The bodyguard had been as signed to Saperstein when he bgan testifying before the Grand Jury in March, 1955. Police said Saperstein was able to tell them he thought he was shot so he could not testify at a New York investigation. "I know of no other motive," he said.. Saperstein has been described by New York officials as a "front man" for George Scalise, a one-time labor leader jailed in 1940 for stealing his own union's funds. Saperstein was convicted of contempt for refusing to answer a New York Grand Jury's ques tions about racketeering. But after four months in jail, he changed his mind and decided to "cooperate." A heavy police guard was post ed at Saperstein's hospital room and police also were assigned to his expensive South Orange home. ' ' Three Men in Car Saperstein's companion, iden tified as a Bayonne, N.J., wom an, told police she and Saper stein were sitting in his car shortly before 4 a.m. when an other car pulled up. Three men were in the other car, she said. One got out, open ed the door of Saperstein's car and fired four times, aiming at Saperstein s head. Two bullets struck Saperstein's left ear. One hit him in the mouth. The fourth passed through his throat. A resident of the 'neighbor hood heard the shots and rushed outdoors as the gunman fled. The resident pushed the bleeding Saperstein over in the front seat of his car and drove a few hun dred feet to St. Barnabas hos pital. 'Secrecy' Delaying Some Developments Washington (U.R) Rep. John E. Moss (D-Calif.) said Friday leading scientists have agreed that government-ordered "ex treme secrecy" has delayed im portant technological develop ments. . Moss, chairman of a House government' operations subcom mittee studying government re strictions on scientific informa tion, made the statement after three days of committee hear ings. Not only has research been impeded, he said, but application "of the, results of research to important technological devel opments has been delayed and even prevented altogether be cause of a fetish for extreme secrecy on the scientific com munity." Moss said the subcommittee learned that some leading sci entists and universities have re fused to work on important pro jects because of the secrecy. Court Records CITY court ' ) .
