epublican Side of Editor'g note: The following dis patch was prepared as a thumbnail report on the nation's first presiden tial primary next Tuesday in New Hampshire. It rovers the candidates, the issues, and the campaign thus far. Simitar dispatches on the other prin cipal primaries are being prepared for publication on the Thursday pre ceding these primaries. By ROBERT T. SHEERAN United Press Correspondent Concord, N.H. !U.R) To the casual observer most of the action in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential pri mary next Tuesday will be on the Democratic side of the bal lot. But one spot on the Republi can ballot holds a great deal of interest to the seasoned ob server: The place for a write-in preference for vice-president. , Democrats have a clean-cut battle for delegates between Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennes see and the 1952 nominee, Adlai E. Stevenson. No one expects anything but an Eisenhower sweep on the GOP side. Mr. Eisenhower is the only candidate in the preferent ial section for President. And 26 of the 36 delegate candidates are favorable to the President. Seven are favorable to Sen. William Knowland of Califor nia, two are unpledged and one k favorable to Chief Justice Earl Warren. Fourteen GOP delegates will be elected. Kefauver Alone . Kefauver is alone in the pre ferential section of the Demo cratic ballot but has stiff oppo sition in the battle for delegates. Aje you familiar with a film titled "The Scarlet Pimpernel"? Margaret Truman saw it 16 times. That was when her Papa was President and she could ask for a White House showing of any film in which she was in terested. I believe the 16 show ings of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is the White House record. There have been 48 daughters of Pres idents in our country's history and only two seem to have inspired any marked degree of public interest. They are Alice Roosevelt, daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, and Margaret Tru man. The latter's life story titled "Souvenir" now appearing in the Good Housekeeping Mag azine g a remarkably well handled and appealing autobiog raphy. It is entirely devoid of affectation. In addition to having the virture of sincerity, Miss Truman's tale is intensely in teresting because it includes so much inside stuff on life as lived in the White House. Horses and Women Sophia Loren, the Italian cin ema siren, is known as "The Siz zler." Sophia is quite a sizzler. However, I think Anita Ekberg outsizzles her. In fact I , think, generally speaking, the Scandi navian beauties outsizzle the Italian beauties. Many Scandin avian families, lived in our old neighborhood in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The bank will be used to store salvaged arteries for use in pa tients whose arteries have been damaged in accidents or in pa tients suffering aneurisms or weakened arteries. Healthy ar teries are taken from patients who have died. Services of the bank will be made available to physicians all over the state. More Campaigning Kefauver has visited -New Hampshire twice to gain popu United sue. . .In the surgical repair of some types- of injuries, the danger of leaving, a hollow area in the body where a hematoma could form is a very pressing one. And present techniques are not al ways adequate. . Dr. Tanzer has been experi menting with buttons for sever al years, he told his fellow sur geons. He found that they work ed beautifully wherever on the body there were two . back-to-back surfaces onto which he could sew them. ' The hand has two such sur faces. So do the ear; the lips, and the cheek, with the cheek, the second button become invis ible to casual glance, since it is inside the mouth. He has sewed on buttons in 22 cases, he said, and in only one case did a hematoma devel op. He also found buttons effec tive in preventing hemorrhage when the surgical area is around the ears, lips, or cheeks. Hematomas are a complica tion which are likely to develop after surgery to repair wounds in the "more mobile areas" of the body (such as the hand) or after surgery which required the "undermining of covering struc tures," he reminded his au dience. '..,, The problem usually is to find a way to make the "covering structure adhere effectively - to the floor of a concave defect." He cited a number of his cas es, including that of an eight-year-old girl who had mangled her hand in the wringer of moth er's washing machine. He raised a flap of skin from her abdomen. This flap he fixed firmly to the "denuded"-Palm of her hands with his befttons-back-to-back technique. Thus, he made a successful graft which, when the hand was cut loose from the abdomen, gave the child a repaired and usable hand. By HARRIS ELLSWORTH Congressman, Fourth District Washington, D.C. (Special) About four years ago Congress thought it was doing a ' good thing .vnen it passed a law changing the . uniform size and weight limitations on parcel post packages and setting various size and weight limitations for pack ages from - different classes of post offices. The law has caus ed considerable irritation and dissatisfaction. Last fall when I was in Ore gon I was requested by four dif ferent cities through their cham bers of commerce, and others, to introduce special bills in - Con gress to eliminate them from the application of the law. Oth er members of Congress report ed similar requests. The practic al approach to the problem is, of course, to get rid of the trou blesome law itself. A bill re-establishing uniform weight and size limitations was introduced and now the Post Of fice department after attempt ing to administer the old law has simply asked Congress , to pass the new bill. I hope we can get it passed in the very near future. Rickreall Holdup Attempt Brings 15-Year Sentence Dallas, Ore. (U.R) Robert Scott Kennen, 32, Salem, was sentenced to 15 years in the state penitentiary Tuesday on an armed robbery charge. He was accused of participating in the attempted robbery of the Rickereall Bar-B-Que last .Nov ember. ' , His partner in the crime, Wal lace Cunningham, 35, Portland, was slain by a deputized ser vice station operator. A state police officer was wounded.
