Gloria Swanson Discovers Rome Church Truly American's' Home Away From Home' By GLORIA SWANSON Written for United Press Rome (U.R) An American's "home away from home" in Rof is truly St. Paul's Ameri can Protestant church, the first American church to be built within the walls of Rome after religious liberty was declared in this country. 0 It is hard to realize that little more than 75 years have passed since such Americans as J. P. Morgan, Lorillard Wolf, the Astors and scores of others list ed in the social register could not vacation in Florida because there was no Palm Beach or Miami as yet. Instead they spent their win ters in Rome, and spent S3, 000, 000 in building one of its most beautiful churches. The celebrated Sir Edward Burne-Jones executed the mosaic-covered chancel. The church possesses the second largest or gan and the only carillon in Rome. It is quite fitting that Rome should declare St. Paul's a national monument. This is all past history, and not what would bring me to the church -more than once. I, as well as hundreds of other Amer icans, go to worship. The rector, Canon Charles Shreves who is neither too young nor too old has a cheer ful personality that lights up a room or the pulpit with his good humor. The first sermon I heard was about the ' importance of "staying on the beam." The cultural, physical and spiritual needs of human beings are, in this house of God, well cared for. Becausa Rome is a mecca for students and artists, many of whom are too poor to hire a gallery or a concert hall, they exhibit their works of art or musical or literary talents in this church. After the service on Sunday, most everybody goes to the gallery to have a cup 1 PAYING $56 FINE, svelte Marilyn Monroe is in solemn mood after receiving strong criticism by Beverly Hills, Cal., q judge for ignoring two-year-old citation for driving without a license. Monaco (U.R) Some of the 23,000 residents of Monaco are beginning to think twice about the forthcoming marriage of Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly. Not that they have anything against Miss Kelly. She'll make a lovely princess. It's those other Americans. "I suppose they'll be landing on our beach in droves all in flowered sport shirts, with the tail&hanging out," said an old iimer whose shirt was neatly fucked in. "Of course, we like Ameri cans. But we prefer them in eve ning clothes at the casino. Espe cially the very rich ones, who are not too noisy." The old gentleman was speak ing for a minority here who see the big wedding April 18-19 as a threat of being "Kelly-ized." They fear Monaco's "old tradi tion' will be swamped under an Nixon Gathers Old Jaft Wing Strength Washington (U.R). Vice President Richard M. Nixon ap peared to be gathering strength Saturday in the old Taft wing of theCfcOP against a possible east ern Republican choice for the vice-presidential nomination. Although Nixon has never been identified as a Taft man, backers of the late Sen. Robert A. Taft have been listening to "Dump Nixon" talk with suspi cion and csentment. They have interpreted it as the forerunner of moves to dis place Nixon as President Eisen howers running mate this year with someon like former Gov, Thomas E. Dewey of New York and Gov. Christian A. Herter of Massachusetts. Mr. Eisenhower repeatedly has poured lavish praise on Nixon but has stopped short of endorsing him for renomina tion. When the president made his own second term announce ment this week, heoindicated he thought it would be improper to do so before he is renominated himself. Britain, France Set Up Ministers Meeting Paris U.R) Britain and France set up a conference be tween their two, prime minis ters Saturday for a sweeping review of the world situation. Britain's Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden invited Frencfi Premier Guy Mollett to go to London for the discussion. Mol let accepted immediately. The date was to be worked out later. invasion of Americans and American ways. . -Many Dollars Between 5,000 and 10,000 Americans are expected to show up for the wedding, as many in sports shirts' as in tuxedos. A "face-lifting" of Monte Carlo to relieve them of as many dollars as possible already is under way. A second high-stakes craps table has been installed in the private salon of the Monte Carlo casino. Pictures of Miss Kelly and the Prince are everywhere. Souvenir shops are completely out 'of. American flags. . Hotels are remodeling their rooms and plumbing. But even the idea of fixing up the plumb ing is distasteful to the more conservative Monagesques. Bad plumbing is traditional in Euro pean hotels. The. same people frown dark ly at the modern 14-story sky scraper being built at the sunny port. Most Monagesques, however, are anxious for the wedding and everything that goes with it. This promises to be a dilly of a tourist season. The wedding gives Monte Carlo businessmen a "big draw" to offset the annual Internation al Film Festival at Cannes. It is expected to be such an attraction that yesterday the film festival, which had been scheduled for April . 10 to 24, was postponed until A$ril 23-May 10. The festi val committee feared the wed ding would draw all the tourists away from Cannes, which is practically next door to Monaco. Now each event may help at tract crowds to the other. FAMILIAR TOPIC Washington (U.R) Presi dent Eisenhower heard a ser mon Sunday on a topic that had a familiar ring. Dr. L. R. Elson of National Presbyterian church where the President attended the 9 a.m. service spoke on "Alternatives in High Decisions." Fresno, Calif. (U.R) At least two major oil companies were charged Saturday with at tempting to fix prices and "squeeze" retailers' profits. PICTURE TUBES REJUVENATED Is your picture tuba dull and weak? Two opera sing ers from the Rome opera, who both are Catholics, sing in the St. Paul's choir. So there obvi ously is no room for bigotry in this house of worship. Traditionally, the senior warden of the American church is the American ambassador. Often the ambassador will give the Thanksgiving sermon. Last year, however, the ambassador Clare Booth .
