Long-Parched
Gets New Supply of Water
Nazareth, scene of many mir
acles, has witnessed a new one
water, in plentiful supply.
Joint Arab-Jewish ceremonies
have 'opened a pipeline which
brings the literally precious fluid
into every home in this peren
nially parched city.
The water if or the most pre
dominantly Arab city in Israel
is piped in from a Jewish , farm
settlement in "the Valley of Es
draelon. The 12-inch pipe carries
it to a summit' overlooking Naz
areth where; a junction with mu
nicipal pipelines allows distribu
tion throughout the city, i-
Heretofore, .- Nazarene women
had to carry- water-, in earthen
jugs . just as their r predecessors
did long before the time of
Christ.. Now such sources as the
famed "Fountain of Our Lady
Mary" will -be needed only as
shrines recalling the city's "his
toric past.
' To the homeplace of Jesus the
advent of modern conveniences
is ; a vast change . from experi
ences' of . the past. In the Chris
tian era alone Nazareth has been
conquer od a half dozen or more
times. Under 'most of ' the con
querors, the city fared badly. X
The Je.wish inhabitants of
Nazareth disappeared some time
before the sixth century. But
long before the birth of Christ
they had been , the target of . a
variety of invaders. '
No mention is made of Naza
reth in. the Old Testament. In the
time of Christ the town was so
insignificant that the term Naz
arene was . applied , to Him in de
rision Yet Nazareth became- and
continues to be one of Christen
dom's holiest places
o
Nazareth
The city . was wrecked by Sala-
din in the - Christian-Moslem
wars of the Middle Ages. In the
same period the Christian' popu
lation -was massacred by Bibars,
the Egyptian sultan and general.
Some of the historic churches
have been razed and rebuilt as
many as three times.' ; ; -'r'-
In : the heights above " Naza
reth, which lies in a cup of the
Galilee hills, may be seen the
sites of many of the famous
place names of oiblical history.
To the east lies Gilboa? where
Saul died, .and Tabor where
Deborah's men gathered to meet
the Canaanites. Westward, is an
cient Megiddo where the Egyp
tians defeated Josiah of Judah,
and-Carmel where Elijah bested
the prophets of Baal.
Less than five miles away was
the once thriving city of Sep
phoris where the - Romans put
down a desperate revolt; of the
Jews led by Judas the Galilean
when Jesus" was" a'"" boy., Herqd
Antipas, son of Hero'd the Great,
rebuilt Sepphoris, and," there is
speculation that the young Car
penter may have-aided in the re
construction. .t
