February 27, 1956 Committee Makes First Plans For Scout Day Camp Members of the Medford Girl Scout day camp committee met recently to plan for the annual day camping in June. Mrs. Maurice Ritchey is day camp chairman, and on her commit tee are Mrs.. Lynn Hayes, Med ford, camp director"; Mrs. Ben Darras and Mrs. Raleigh Greene, both Central Point, and Mrs. Wil liam Centers, Medford. Last year there was a severe shortage of camp assistants, and the committee urges that mothers of all Girl Scouts and non-scouts who attend day camp seriously consider their availability to help at camp. Any woman who can give time . is asked to call the scout- office, 2-5912, or Mrs. Ritchey, 2-8474. , . About 600 girls attended day camp in the area last year, and about 240 attended the Medford day camp. According to nation al Girl Scout day camp stand ards, there must be one adult to every eight girls. According to Mrs. Ritchey, there can be no registrations taken at the camp site if there are not more than enough adults registered in pro portion to advance registrations of girls. Mrs. Ritchey states that the women need not be skilled camp ers, because training sessions will be held in Medford April 26 and May 24 to train women in day camp activities and skills. The day camp theme this year will be "Americana" in order to increase each girls' knowledge of her native land. . Pythian Sisters Make Pledge to Memorial Hospital Pythian Sisters voted to pledge $100 to the Rogue Valley Me morial hospital fund, and a do nation to the March of Dimes at a recent meeting- Recommenda tions suggested at a recent meet ing of officers also were voted on. Mrs. Harry Barneburg won a gift and Mrs. Arnold Matschen bacher was appointed to take charge of quarterly birthday parties. Pythian club women will meet for a card party Tuesday, Febru ary "28, at 8 p.m. in the home of Mrs. James Cech, -2877 Spring brook road. Members are asked to invite guests. Mrs. Carl Fichtner and Mrs. Polly Offutt will sponsor a Past Chiefs card party Wednesday, February 29 at .1 p.m.," at the home of Mrs. Fichtner, 613 South Holly street. . - Mrs. W. L. Michael and Mrs. Delia Watkins were hostesses for party Thursday. Group Discusses Health, Standards For Kindergartens Jackson county kindergarten operators and teachers met Saturday at the home of Mrs. Lester Harris, 707 South Oak dale avenue, to discuss common problems and plans of the new ly organized Southern Oregon Pre-School association. The . group discussed ; health and safety, standards for kinder gartens, and local certification, as well as dues for the local and state groups. - " Attending the meeting were Mrs. Robert Forbes, Mrs. Nor man Hillyer, Mrs. John . Kent, Mrs. B. C. Tennant, Mrs. Paul A s h b y, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Dorothy rDowson, Mrs. Gordon MacKenzie and Floyd Mode, all Medford, and Mrs. L. A. Ryer son, Central Point. Most of these had been pres ent for the meeting of the South ern Oregon Pre-School associa: tion held the preceding Satur day. Need. for an organization of pre-scbool institution opera tors was discussed and Mrs. Tennant reported on a state wide meeting held in Corvallis in November and a January meeting in Portland. Elliott Becken, assistant sup erintendent of Medford 'Public schools, spoke on ways in which pre-school operators could best aid the public schools in deve loping good study habits and dealing with special problems. He urged kindergarten and nur sery operators to be well . in formed ,on first aid. Miss Laura York of Washing ton school derrionstrated how the left handed child can best be shown the correct use of cray ons," pencils, scissors, etc. ; Miss Mary Vandenburg, psy chiatric social worker of the Southern Oregon Child Guid ance spokte of ways in which the clinic could serve agencies deal ing with young children. Miss Lois Kelley Named to Office Corvallis A Medford high school junior, Miss Lois Kelley, was elected state parliamentar ian of the Oregon association of Future Homemakers of America at the group's convention at Ore gon State college Saturday. Miss Kelley has been active in FHA homemaking projects for the past three years. She was secretary for the district meeting and chairman and com mittee member for district meet ing hostess chapter, committees. ij She is a member of .. Quill and Scroll, , national high school journalism honorary, and Junior Posse, teen-age riding group. Miss Kelley is co-advertising manager for the high school newspaper. Doctors Speak On Fluoridation Dr. John T. Brandenburg and Dr. E. V. Meyerding spoke on fluoridation at a meeting of Xi Mu, examplar chapter of Beta Sigma .'Phi held at. the home of Miss Adabee Seiler. : Mrs. Ed ward W. Sickels assisted in showing a film on fluoridation prepared by the U. S. Public Health department. The film depicts the discus sion, in a typical town, of all aspects . of fluoridation .of .t h e town's water supply, and the people's decision to add the fluorides to their water. Accur ate, controlled testing showed that child tooth decay was great ly decreased. The chapter voted to go on record favoring local fluorida tion of water to supplement the too - small amounts of fluorine in the daily diet. An announcement was made by the president, Mrs. J. Ed gar Moir, that Beta Sigma. Phi city council is planning for the chapters to provide entertain ment and refreshments at Camp White March 28. A regular meeting of the city council will be held March 12 at Mrs. Moir's home, 1105 Sha fer lane. Mrs. Robert Carter, who is affiliated with the Grants Pass chapter, was a guest. Mrs. Bill Prentiss assisted the hostess in serving refreshments..- Eagle Point HEC Plans Meeting on Wednesday Eagle. Mrs. Gale is currently on a tour as a member of The Chris tian Science Board of Lecture ship. Her subject was, "Chris tian Science: The Transforming Power of Truth." The First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," is the basis of Chris tian Science, according to the lecturer. She will meet with the follow ing community leaders: Miss Dorothy Collard, supervising nurse, Jackson county health department; Mrs. Joanne weatn erford, county extension agent, home economics; Earle- Jossy, county extension agent, agricul ture; Alf. B. Mekvold, superin tendent, Jackson county schools; Leonard B. Mayfield, superin tendent, Medford city schools; and Lester Adams, manager, Oregon Milk Producers associa tion. England and Eastern states, it was re ported recently. Using highway, railroad and airways maps and charts show ing steamships routes, they drew on their maps the routes they would like to travel to reach some historical spot in those states. Children have done research on the area, written descriptions of it and told why they would like to visit, it.
