Kelley of Medford was one of 74 students and faculty to be selected for membership in the Oregon State college chapter of Phi Sigma, national biology honor fraternity. '. " ; , The honorary recognizes in' terest and outstanding academic achievement in the biological sciences and closely allied fields. Miss Kelley will be initiated March 8. Majoring in medical-technology at OSC, Miss Kelley is the daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Orval P. Kelley of 1629 Thomas road, Medford. She is a 1953 graduate of Medford High school where she was an honor student. ' Women Golfers To Open Season Women golfers of Rogue Val ley Country club will open the 1956 season with a luncheon Thursday, March 1, at 12 noon at the clubhouse. The luncheon is for all members, social as well as golfing members, and reservations are to be made with Mrs. E. B. Padzweit, telephone 2-9423. The committee states that no pairings will be made, but that play will follow luncheon. Mrs. Ray Frisbie is chairman of the women golfers for this season. Mrs. Mary B Maass was toastmistress-. f-j - Farewell Party At Local Church Honors Fowlers Following recent evening serv ices at Central Church of Christ in Medford, members and friends of the church met in the Social hall an'd gave a farewell reception in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Fowler and their three children, Margaret, Bruce and Frances. The Fowlers have been active in the work of the church since coming, to Medford four years ago. Mr. Fowler is an elder and a trustee and Mrs. Fowler has been a youth sponsor. Mr. Fowler, an engineer em ployed by the U. S. government in the geological survey, is being transferred to Boise, Ida. The family will move to Boise as soon as arrangements can be made for a home. Murphys Return From Trip South Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Murphy, Ross 'lane, arrived home last week from a trip to southwest states. They visited in the Rio Grand valley and at San An tonio and El Paso in Texas. En route home they stopped at Indio, Calif., to attend the annual Riverside County Fair and Horse show held in connec tion with the annual date festi val there. (Brainerd photo) VFW Auxiliary Make Plans for District Session A district meeting of Veterans of Foreign Wars will be held be held May 6 in Medford, it was announced by Crater Lake post auxiliary officials last week. The local post and auxiliary will be the host groups. Sessions will be held in the VFW hall, 42 North Front street during the afternoon and evening. Auxiliary members will meet Thursday, February 29 for aud iting of paraphernalia and work session for cleaning the hall. This will be an all-day meeting. Mrs. Ivan Lusk, president of of the auxiliary, announced. At a dinner February 21 past commanders of the post and past presidents of, the auxiliary were honored. Commanders to be honored were Ira Canfield, first com mander and later department commander: - Etha Wall, Burt Hukill, Merrill Beneka, William Coons, Charles Holbrook,- Ed Branchfield, Ed Smith and Cecil Bell, who sis the present com mander for a second term. Also honored was Richard Schulz, who is a past commander of the Watertown, S. D., VFW post. Auxiliary members honored were Mrs. Canfield, second pres ident; Mrs. Wall, Mrs. Hukill; Mrs. Albert Hall, Mrs. Schulz, Mrs. Fred Lawrence, Mrs. Lusk, Mrs. O. O. DeBerry, Mrs. Beneka, Mrs. Nora Walters, Mrs. J. Kula and Mrs. Ruth Beard. Also honored was Mrs. John Brummond and Mrs. Pearl Bur inege, who have served in other states. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Ted Werder. Mr. Werder is the Medford Navy recruiting officer and the couple enter tained the group by showing Navy and construction battalion pictures. Also at the meeting were Henry G. Albrecht, Rogue River, District' 7 junior vice-commander, and Mrs. George Pence. Mrs. Phylliss Brownlee of Del Rogue auxiliary, Grants Pass, was a guest. She is department color bearer. The 3 o'clock Sunday after noon ceremony was performed at the First Methodist church in Ashland by the Rev. Ross Knotts. The bride was given in mar riage by her father. Her gown was of embroidered nylon tulle over white satin made with full fashioned skirt. A cap of Mary Stuart lace held her illusion veil and her bouquet was of pink sweetheart roses and white hya cinths. Miss Kathlen Hess, a sister, was maid of honor. Her pink dress was of crystalline and she carried pink elf roses.- Miss , Barbara Simmonds, bridesmaid, wore a crystalline gown of pink matching the one worn by the honor attendant and also carried pink elf roses. Both wore pink bandeaux on their hair. '. Glenna Lee Logan, niece of the bride, was flower girl, while her brother, Charles Dennis Lo gan, was ringbearer. The flower girl's dress was of pale pink ny lon and she carried a basket of rose petals. Donald Cullop was best man and Donald Wolff and the bride groom's brothers, Gerald Mickle and Ronald Mickle, served as ushers. Richard Wilson, a nephew of the bride, and William Mickle, a brother of the bridegroom, lighted the tapers. Music was furnished by Mrs. Frank Davis and songs by Eugene Gosson. Basket arrangements of pussy willows, eucalyptus ; and deep pink snapdragons and carnations decorated the church. The reception was held in the church fireside room and the same color scheme was used. - . Mrs. Cullop and Mrs.'Glen Lo gan served the cake and pouring coffee was Mrs. Larkin Grubb. Punch was served by Mrs. Rich ard Hawkins and Mrs. . Roy Rawe. The bride's mother wore an afternoon dress of navy blue crepe with ecru lace trim and navy accessories. Her corsage was of pink roses and white car nations. The bridegroom's moth er wore a lace and crepe dress of peacock- blue and her acces sories were heather pink. The bride is a 1954 graduate of Ashland high school. She was employed by the Bell Telephone company in Los Angeles and now is a student at Southern Oregon college. The . bridegroom was gradu ated from the same high school in 1949 and served for four years in the Navy air wing. He is employed by the J. Hickey Construction company. MAIN - EST. 1908 Kiwanian ; Dames Aid Scouts A check for $550 was pre sented to the Girl Scouts at the annual Girl Scout luncheon of Medford Kiwanian Dames, held Tuesday at the home of Mrs. E. Ronald Rice, 215 Siginaw Drive. The check, presented to the area for the established camp, Low Echo, brings to about $5,000 the sum wtiich Kiwanian Dames have contributed to. scouts for the camp over a period of many years. When the project was first in itiated, Kiwanian Dames donated a $25 campship each year. Later, money was provided for coun selors and in recent years the checks have helped to buy two boats, a canoe, have helped to improve the waterfront, provide showers, buy dishes and table ware, have been applied on the refrigeration unit, a fireplace, completion of infirmary build ing, remodeling kitchen, and last year, to purchase four new row boats. The check was presented to Mrs. Maurice Ritchey, represent ative of the Girl Scout Area camping committee, by Mrs. John Pletsch and Mrs.. Lou Cranston, co-chairmen for the "doll project" through which the money was raised. Mrs. Ritchie spoke on plans for the 1956 camp. The money this year will be used for new cooking and sanitary equipment for the kitchen, equipment for the dining room and infirmary. Other guests at the meeting included Mrs. Michele Rossi, president of Rogue Valley Area council and Miss Mary Aldrich, executive director. Mrs. Boyd Budge, president, conducted the business meeting. - Soden-Wallace Wedding Held In Eagle Point Central Point ' Miss Rober ta Jeanette Wallace, Cummings, Calif., was married February 15 to Ellis Elmer Soden, route 2, box 81, Central Point. The cere mony was held in the home of the Rev. and Mrs. D. E. Millard, Eagle Point, at 7 o'clock in the evening. The couple made their wed ding trip down the coast to San Francisco and will live in Central Point at route 2, box 81.- : -: . The bride wore a baby blue and grey checked suit with grey accessories and her corsage was of pink and white . carnations. - Miss Ear line Soden, a sister of the bridegroom, was the honor attendant. Her suit was grey-green and her accessories white. She wore a corsage of white carnations. The Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Millard furnished music and songs. About 35 persons attended the double ring ceremony and over 50 were at the" reception held at the home of the bridegroom's mother, Mrs. Violet Soden, Cen tral Point. Mrs. '. George Myers, Central Point, grandmother of the bride groom, served the- cake and punch was poured by Mrs. Min nie Blaess, great aunt of the bridegroom, The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Haggard, Cum mings, and. the bridegroom's father, Elmer Soden, lives at Shady Cove. The bride attended schools in Eugene, Gold Beach and Drain and the bridegroom received his education at Shady Cove and Eagle Point schools. He is employed by the Robert Ogles- by Logging company. 4- Lee Greenleaf Guest of Family Lee M. Greenleaf, Menlo, Park, Calif., visited in Medford briefly last week with his moth er, Mrs. W. L. Greenleaf, 103 South . Holly street, and his brother-in-law and sister, Mr; and Mrs. J. R. Smith, 1033 Red- dy avenue. " The visitor made the trip by plane. Mr. Greenleaf, an official of Morrison-Knudsen Construction company, will leave tomorrow by plane for San Francisco for an around-the-world trip by plane, accompanied by his wife. In Turkey he will attend the dedication of a large dam which the firm recently completed. 5 EsfcScfesSS Two Medford women who hav each served on the board of ihs Jackson County chapter. National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, for 21 years, were honored at a dinner meeting Monday evening at the Medford hotel. The two women are Mrs. Lewis Ulrich (at left) and Mrs. C. El wood Hedberg. Mrs. Ulrich has been the chapter treasurer since its organization in 1935, and Mrs. Hed berg has been chairman of the women's activities for the same period. Both are retiring from the board. They were presented gifts from other board members, with Mrs. Moore Hamilton, secretary, making the presentation. Twelve attended. (Brainerd photo Medford Women To Visit Europe Travelers continue to provide interesting news, and two Med ford women leave soon for visits in Europe. Mrs. Samuel D. Ear hart, 11 North Peach, leaves Medford Tuesday, February 28, and Mrs. Russell Herbert, 9 East Jackson street, will leave March 4. Mrs. Earhart travels by plane to New York from where she will sail on the Queen Eliza beth for Southampton, England. After a stay of several days in London and other English cities, she will go to Holland and from there, tour 11 countries of Eu rope. At the completion of the tour Mrs. Earhart will go to Patton ville, U. S. Army post near Stutt gart, Germany, for a visit o'f several weeks with her son-in-law and daughter, Chief War rant Officer and Mrs. Herbert Herbert. Mrs. Earhart will return in June. Mrs. Herbert will leave Med ford March 4 and after spending a few days in New York will sail for Italy March 17, arriving in Naples March .25 where she will be met by her family. Mrs. Herbert, "a native of Italy, will spend two months with her fam ily in Rome, and arrive back in New York June 9. It has been nine years since Mrs. Herbert has seen her family. Mrs. George Weir was hon ored at a farewell luncheon and bridge party Friday afternoon at Rogue Valley Country club. Mr. and- Mrs. Weir, who have lived in the valley for many years, are leaving Medford to day to make their home in Sa linas, Calif. . The no-host party was arrang ed by Mrs. Merton Lyster and Mrs. Herb Crain, and 17 at tended. Prizes for bridge went to Mrs. Ray Wright, . Mrs. Cal Webber, Mrs. Jack Lewis and Mrs. Austin Laymance.' The Weirs have lived at 115 Highland drive in recent years, and the home has been pur chased "by Mr. and Mrs. Crane Mr. and Mrs. Weir have two sons, George Weir Jr., now in the Army and stationed at Bos ton, Mass., and Allen Weir, who with Mrs. Weir and their. two children are living in Hayward. Slides will also be shown; The club execu tive board plans to meet Monday, February 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Charles Stearns, 522 West Fourth street. -'77 7 1 - Beauty Salon Birthday Party Held by Chapter At Denton Home A birthday party ,was enjoyed bv nearlv 25 members of Aloha Rho chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Monday evening. The party is an annual event, and this year observed the fourth anniversary of organization of Alpha Rho chapter. Mrs. K. L. Denton held the festive party in her home, 805 West Second street, and it was in the form of a potluck dinner. Three different cakes were dec orated with four candles each. Mrs. Ld Bunnell, the chapter's first president, cut the cake. After a program given by Mrs. Paul Dix, individual cup cakes, topped with the chapters significant yellow rose and a lighted candle, were passed around as favors for the eve ning. As gifts are synonomous of birthdays, each member had brought a gay gift to exchange with her secret paland at the conclusion new names were drawn for the coming year. ' Doctor to Speak For Nurses' Group "The Proposed Rogue Valley Memorial Hospital," will be the topic of Dr. Edwin R. Durno's talk before Licensed Practical Nurses association of Jackson County when, the group meets Monday, February 27. The meet ing will be held in ' the Com munity hospital penthouse at 7:30 p.m. .
