EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, February 23, 195B Landon Points To Republican Need for Popular Can didate By ROY L McGHEE United Press Correspondent Topeka, Kan. (U.R) Alf M. Landon, who headed the Repub lican ticket unsuccessfully 20 years ago, advises . the GOP to come up with a candidate "more popular than the party." "It's the only way to win," commented the politically alert former governor, now 68. Landon, who ran against Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936, said his assessment of the 1956 presidential sweepstakes was based on "a careful reading of recent history." "Two out of the last three presidents have been more popu lar than their party," Landon said. "And you can make a good case that all three were. "There's certainly no dispute about Roosevelt and Eisenhow er. And Truman went into the 1948 campaign a defeated man, but he won." Landon conceded there was no Rerjublican todav. exceDt Mr Eisenhower, stronger than the party. "That leaves three great "un knowns in the campaign," he said. "They are the South, inter national affairs and the econom ic situation." The South Landcn said he thought it was a good bet there might be anoth er "third party" movement in the South this year, with as many as eight to 12 states defect ing from the Democrats. "The attitude of the candi dates on the Powell amendment will probably' decide what the South does. (The amendment would bar federal school funds from segregated districts). If both candidates are for it, or both parties carry strong anti segregation platform planks, there probably will be a third party movement. Lopez picked the name Hutton for her. He made the choice by numerol ogy of which he is a very deep student. s , Council Recommends Train Speed Change Medford city council at a reg ular meeting Tuesday night passed-a recommendation to South ern Pacific railroad that train speeds through Medford be re duced. The council recently objected to speed limits for trains set by the Public Utilities commission. The company formerly indicated it would honor speed limits pro posed by the council. Speeds at crossings were re duced from 35 to 25 miles per hour at Stewart ave., Jackson St., Clark st., and McAndrews rd., and from 35 to 15 -miles per hour at Eleventh, Third and Fourth sts. Landon said a 20th century phenomenon of American poli tics was failure of the two par ties to punish defectors. He said it started with the Republicans in 1912, when Theodore Roose velt led the Bull Moose revolt. It did not happen in the Demo cratic party until 1948. "Southern defectors were pun ished by the Democrats " after 1928," Landon said. "But in both 1948 and 1952 southerners who bolted did so with impunity." Politicians hated to face it, but there was a definite break down in r party discipline, he added. Prosperity and Peace In discussing his second "great unknown," Landon said it was impossible in February to pre dict what the voters would do in November. 'Teace is a powerful theme," he added. "It's more powerful than the farm situation. And borrowing unforeseen crises be tween now and November, it will still be powerful and help the Republicans. You can't ar gue with a foreign policy that produces peace. It's one of our feieatest assets." Landon keeps a finger in the complicated Republican politics of Kansas and is well-informed at the national level. He said he is in touch with the national committee, administration lead ers and the foremost political writers. He detests the term "elder statesman" and insists he has several years yet before it can be applied properly to him. He spends most of his time running his chain of radio stations and oil wells. "Prosperity is the third great factor in the election," Landon said. "Business levels are high and the Republicans are getting the credit. Just as you can't ar gue with peace, neither can you argue with prosperity." Landon admitted the serious ness of the farm problem, but took a rosier view than most of his fellow party members. "The farmer himself may be mad and may vote Democratic, but his wife votes too," he com mented. "A Kansas farmer and his wife were in to see their lawyer the other day. When the business, was finished, the farm er told the lawyer he would vote Democratic. And he told him with feeling, pounded -the desk. But as they left, the wife said, 'He might vote Democratic, but there isn't any war, and I'm go ing to vote Republican." NO ACCIDENTS White River Junction, Vt.
