TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, February 21. 195S Little Girl Look To Be Fashionable By ELIZABETH TOOMEY United Presi Correspondent Summer fashion shows, now under way in the showrooms of hundreds of American manu facturers, reveal a back to girl hood look. Little girls love to copy moth er's clothes, but now mothers can dress up in full-skirted org andies and lace-edged cottons that hark back to their own little girl wardrobes. I Next' summer's clothes allow women to show off their figures in a grownup way, however. Those dainty white and pastel organdy dresses have full skirts and tight waists. Belts are often wrap - around narrow ribbon sashes that trail little girl stream ers behind. . Sheaths with ribbon-threaded camisole necklines look youth ful, yet cling to the figure and sometimes show off a little extra leg with sophisticated three-inch slits at the sides of the skirt. Girls interested in designing careers will have a new field open to them in the future styling cars, not clothes. ' This prediction ' comes from George W. Walker, vice presid ent and director of styling for the Ford Motor company. , "We would like to get more girls in our styling department," Walker told reporters this week. "We hired our first three girls in the past six months." . Small World Department: Now there is a wrist watch that tells you what time it is in other cities. The new' men's wrist watch is for modern travellers who cross time zones as often as grandpa crossed the county line. Father-Daughter Banquet Given In Rogue River Rogue River A father-daughter "Sweetheart Banquet" spon sored by the Girl Scouts was held in VFW hall, Rogue River, February 13. " . The hall, was decorated in the valentine motif with each troop preparing the decorations and favors for its own table. The affair was judged a great success by the 150 people who attended largely because of" the cooperation of all concerned,' in cluding the mothers who; pre pared the food and worked in the kitchen, the leaders and assistant leaders who worked with the girls and decorated the hall; L. Casebeer, the grade school prin cipal, who showed an interesting film on "day camping" and the attendance of the girls and their fathers. ' . VFW donated the hall, Live Oak Grange loaned silver and chinaware, and the Civic. Club provided tables and chairs. The Brownies are sponsored by the Lions' Auxiliary and the Girl Scouts by the Civic club. Speaker for the event was Mrs. W. Logan. Greta Schef strom welcomed the guests, and Howard Norwood replied. Dr. D. F. Barnett gave the invocation. Among the guests was Mrs. L. Larson, Grants Pass, Girl Scout district chairman. It is hoped the dinner will be come an annual event. Special Box of Toys , Recommended During Illness of Children Pullman How do you keep a sick-a-bed school child con tented? As every mother knows, that's not easy. But here's a sug gestion that might help. It's from Miss Emma Harris, of Washing ton State college's child develop ment staff. Miss Harris suggests a special box of toys. The toys should be suited to quiet easy play and should be brought out only when the stay-in-bed rule is in order. Playthings chosen, should be easy to handle and not require too much concentration to 'pre vent tiring the child when he's not up to par. Good choices are jigsaw puzzles with large out lines, coarse weaving materials, sewing cards with large holes, and lightweight -- blocks. Many children like to cut pictures from old magazines or make paper dolls. - : Miniature furniture ' with a lightweight doll house or even shoe boxes may provide inspira tion for interior decoration ven tures The hills and valley of "counterpane land" offer a back ground for arranging small box es for houses and buildings, min iature farm animals, dolls and small automobiles or other light weight vehicles. A tray or stiff piece of card board may be used as a table or level surface for play-in-bed toys. , If a child is so sick that he must remain . very quiet, a bal loon tied to the , bed where an air current moves it slightly often holds his interest for long periods of time. To save mothers extra work in keeping the bedroom tidy, a bed side waste basket is suggested where the child can easily put paper scraps.
