GOLD HILL Cemetery Trustees Meeting By MRS. SAM ELLIOTT Gold Hill The Rocky Point cemetery trustees met at the .home of Mrs. A. 'A. Walker Fri day, Feb. 3. Attending were Charles Vhite, William Wright, Mrs. Nora Wait and Mrs. A. A. Walker, chairman for the im provement committee. The financial report given by the committee showed they have $219.50 for a working capital and this was turned over to Treasurer Mrs. Nora Wait. The money is earmarked for survey ing and plotting and to provide a much needed water system. Clean up day date has been set for Feb. 25. The committee will furnish coffee to those who bring lunches. People are urged to identify graves sometime dur-i ing the day. The Women's Society of Chris tian Service of Medford, Grants Pass, Cave Junction and Wilder ville were guests of the Gold Hill Society Feb. 13. Miss Hoover also had religious training at the Garnett Institute. Miss Hoover has been active in the Little Rock Methodist coun cil of Arkansas. She helped with the organization of new societies and conducted many study courses. Miss Hoover recently re turned from India. Miss Hoover spoke of "The Importance of the Mission and Women's Place in the Church:" She proved herself to be an en thusiastic, witty, speaker. At 3 p.m. the Gold Hill wo men served at a coffee hour with Mrs. Everett Faber of Central Point and Mrs. Robert- Kings bury of Cave Junction pouring. Mrs. Nellie Walker and Mrs. J. G. Kofahl had charge of room and table decorations. The table was centered with a 'Valentine tree. A side table displayed a realistic log cabin complete with mossy ground,, and rail fence with a picture of Abraham Lin coln in the background. Among others who 'assisted with the refreshments were Mrs. Wilbur1 Martin, Mrs. Norman Du senberry and Mrs. Ivan Smith. . Glenn Miller has reported that so far Gold Hill has $625 for the March of Dimes." . The Gold Hill PTA held a cof, fee hour at the Oaks hotel, Mrs. Paul Molloy, hostess. Mrs. Mol loy stated that some 65 members attended.' The PTA have formed a dis cussion group which last met Monday, Feb. 13. The group dis cussed "how best to foster crea tive activities in our children." The next meeting is to be held in the school library March 12 at 3:15 p.m. when they will dis cuss "Personal Family Prob lems." It was announced that all members will be eligible for the Jackson county discussion group which will be held sometime in April. They will sponsor a psy- T " J . Boye, who recently underwent major ' surgery - in Medford hospital, returned to her home on the Pacific highway north. Sundav. Feb- 11. Recent visitors at the home of : Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Freeland on Pacific highway north were, Mrs. Howard Johnson, daughter; Mrs. Doyle Johnson, sister-in-law, and Mrs. H. Johnson. Intermissions were enlivened with tumbling, ball bouncing and other physical education groups. -. A cake walk ended with Jenny Lou Thompson, Donnie Molloy and Deanne Jore taking the cakes. '. The March of Dimes profited in the amount of $100.90. The Gold Hill Garden club will meet at the home of Mrs. J. G. Kofahl on the Pacific high way north Friday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. with a covered dish lunch eon . - The local chapter of the Grange sponsored a basket social Feb. 11 which turned out to be t. money making proposition. A. A. Walker auctioned off decorat ed baskets that were crammed with food. The money derived from the sale was turned over to the Grange to help pay for a music - machine which they re cently purchased. Fun was had by all on Valen tine's day when the school held room parties. There was a great exchanging of Valentines and re freshments were served. Mrs Velora Timms and son, George- Timms, daughter and grandson of Mrs. Edna Foot, have been visitors here from Lynnwood, Calif. They returned home Monday, Feb. 13, taking Mrs. Edna Foot with them where she will visit Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Foot, also of Lynwood, Calif. Miss Rila Waddell, daughter of Mrs. Ruth McCoy, is now at home. She has been attending the Central Bible institute of Spring field, Mo., where she was em ployed by the school library. Mr. and Mrs.- Harry Force land, recently of Alaska, is now employed as a mechanic in Med f -rd and has made his home in Gold Hill. They are living in a rental owned by Alva Walker, Mr and Mrs. Forceland have two pro-school age children. Mr. and Mrs. George Christen sen; son and daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Christensen, have moved to Fort Belvoir where George is taking officers training. . Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Basseler'of Ramsey Canyon entertained Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Wilson and family of Rogue River with a large family dinner on Saturday, Feb. 11. i ' L C. Larvin of Gold Hill, who underwent major surgery Jan. 28' at the Community hospital in Medford, is reported to be much better. , Mr. and "Mrs. Wayne Talbot entertained Mr. and Mrs. Gene Arias and family Saturday, Feb. 11 with an Italian dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd. Went worth, who have been renting the Red Shutters cafe as a home, have recently moved into their home on Lampman road which they have been remodeling. Bill Force, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Force, attended a par ty given in honor 'of his grand mother's 76th birthday. ' Bill Fdrce, radio editor for the United Press Bureau of Portland and formerly', a 'reporter for the Medford Mail Tribune, left Sat urday for assignment on the United Press . foreign desk in Washington, D. C, to be followed by a correspondent's post in South America. ... The rummage sale held last Thursday and Friday in Medford by members of the Gold Hill Health unit was a financial suc cess. It has been reported that they made $201 which was to be turned over to the unit's pledge to the Rogue Valley Hospital fund. Mrs. Arthur Boye was in charge. The Women's Society of Chris tian Service met Friday at the home of Mrs. Nina Dusenberry. Mrs. Wilbur Martin had charge of the devotionals. The lesson for the aay, "The World's Laborers Worthy of Hire," was given by Mrs - Glenn. Bowen. Mrs. Sam Jones, hostess, serv ed a desert luncheon after which the business meeting was called APPLEGATE-JACKSONVILLE Club Gives Birthday Party By HELGA MITCHELL Applegate - Jacksonville A surprise birtnaay parry was given Mrs. Florence Sutton at the last Extension meeting at the home of Mrs. Rolland Smith. Mrs. Joe Farrand and Mrs. O. Buck made a birthday cake and Mrs. Redhead made a Valentine cake. Mrs. Sutton received a shower of cards and some hand kerchiefs. Mrs. Smith gave in structions on braiding and hook ing rugs, and also gave informa tion on dyeing materials and de signs and1 color. Twelve women were present and there was a pot luck dinner. There will be no regular meet ing of the Extension Unit in March, but there will be a work shop 'on lampshade making. All those who have signed up, should contact the project leaders, Mrs. L. Cooper or Mrs. Lynn Valen tine.' The first meeting will be Wednesday, March 7, at the home of Mrs.. Charles Williams. The second meeting will be on Tuesday, March 13 at the home of Mrs. John Byrne. A lesson on the finishes and braiding of bas kets will be given at a later date. The next regular meeting of the Upper Applegate Extension Unit wili be held on Wednesday, April 4, at the home of Mrs. Taylor. The lessons will be on draperies. Work is continuing on the new suspension,foot bride which was washed out by the recent flood, and the Dunlaps with the help of a neighbor are repairing their own private low water vehicle bridge. Friends of Mrs. Jack O'Brien of the Applegate, are happy to hear that she is home again after her recent illness." The Applegate Knitting club will meet at the home of Mrs, Carl Herriot on Tuesday night, Feb. 21. Last Tuesday, the Tractor Maintenance held their meeting at the Charles Elmore residence. 1 Mrs. Bill Bird and Mrs. Wil ma Smith of Applegate drove to ' Roseburg last Sunday to attend j a dog show, and they returned j the same day. The Applegate Church Young People attended a skating party at Grants Pass last Thursday night. " . , Practice for the annual 4-H minstrel show to be held March 16, will be on Mondays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Applegate school Mr. and Mrs. Al Bird of Apple- gate took a trip to southern Cal ifornia for an indefinite stay and will be visiting several relations. Due to the sudden death of Mr. Erickson,- who is the father of Mrs. L. Tweedy, she can celled her trip to Red . Bluff, Calif., and went to Sioux City, la., two weeks ago. Mrs. -Tweedy returned home this past 'week. The Charles Chittocks of route 1 will be moving to Grants Pass in the near future. Expected visitors at the Maps ton residence of Upper Apple gate, are Mapston's brother, Mer vin Mapston and his wife of Great Jails Mont., who are trav eling through. Yalmer Karvonen and his wife of New York Mills, Minn., re cently visited his niece, Mrs. George Sample, . of Sterling Creek, whom he had not seen since she was young, 'it was al most like meeting him for the first time," remarked Mrs. Sam ple. , . Mrs. Sample also stated; that her .daughter Marcia, who had started school last fall and was taken out four months later due to illness, was expected to be up by next month and possibly go back to snhool. A ball game was held at Apple gate between the Applegate and Seventh Day Adventists of Jack sonville teams, with Applegate winning 66 to 47. The Applegate girls' volley ball team played the. Medford YMCA women's team last Friday. Wallace Haskins of Applegate, recently fell and broke a small bone in his ankle, and was brought to the Sacred Heart hos pital last week end. Friends re port that he is getting along fine. Members of the Little Apple gate Sewing club will meet at the home of Mrs. Milton Hous ton, Thursday, Feb. 23. Miss Bonnie Couch of High- pway 238, who', is convalescmg and confined in the Community hospital, has had local and out- of-town' visitors. Her sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Smith of California arrived Feb. . 5, with her two children, Karen anl Jamie.. Mrs. Smith will remain here until Bonnie conies' home from the hospital. . Another sister, Mrs. Enid Joslin and family, returned to .San Fernando, Calif., last week. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Wil son of Riddles, Ore., came to visit Bonnie also. ; A birthday . party was given Feb. 12 in honor of Carl Bell's 63rd birthlay, by his wife and his two children, Lloyd and Ada, of Grouse Creek. ; Guests present were Mr.. and Mrs. Lou Kusel and children, Larry, Sharon, and Rosemary, and Mrs. Jordan and children, Phyllis and, Butchie. The next meeting of the Little Applegate Knitting club will be held Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 1:30 p.m at the home of Mrs. O. Buck. Mrs. Buck urges members to at tend because the club is observ ing its third birthday. All inter ested neighbors are welcome. A Valentine's party was held in the cafeteria at lunch time in the Ruch school last Tuesday Mrs. Elizabeth Vessell and Mrs Mildred Vessell had the tables decorated with candied hearts, Each teacher and pupil received two hearts. ; Since the death of her hus band, Mrs. H. L. Liles of Mena, Ark. has been staying with her grandmother, Mrs. James Steph ens, of Sterling Creek. Presently, Mrs. Liles is staying with her son, J. L. Liles, in. "strang er has arrived to make nis home, if he 'so desires, with Mr. and Mrs. Al Kutsky. He is a ring-tailed, or coon, cat. The little fellow though full grown, he . weighs only about 2Vi to 3 pounds has a body about eleven inches long, while his "tail measures 18 inches. As to color, he is sable brown with a black-and-white ringed tail similar to a coon's. The face is small and fox-like, and his habits are those of a cat. A pair of mounted antlers on the wall is his favorite perch. Caught in Trap He was caught in a steel trap in the Mt. Shasta area,, and Kutsky brought him home about 10 , days ago to have his injured leg treated, as he suffered a compound fracture . of a front leg when the trap snapped on him. After a get-well diet of soft-boiled eggs and honey con taining penicillin administered by. Mrs. Kutsky, the leg has al most healed, and he is in the process now of gnawing off the now useless paw. - He is acquiring a" taste now for ice cream and candy bars! And as ' further evidence that he is becoming domesticated and civilized, he is showing a 'strong preference for- cookies to raw meat, though he is earning his keep by eliminating any mice or rats. His natural habits are noctur nal, but even these he is chang ing. Mrs. , Kutsky said she en joys his company in the day time, and he does his best to provide entertainment with his playful antics Although his family has earn ed the reputation of being vic ious, the little fellow has offered no resistance. : and shows no signs of aggressiveness. , Kutsky has been in the trap ping ; and : taxidermy business here for several years, and, as has been his custom, any an imals caught , accidentally, are nursed back , to health, when feasible,.? and are then given their choice as to whether they prefer domesticity or a return to their natural habitat. The Kutskys recently purchas ed, and moved into, the Morgan Gunst Lodge on the Klamath river. Kutsky also is becoming established as a guide for hunt ing, trapping and fishing ex peditions in northern California. Applegate, underwent surgery in Grants Pass this week.;; ' A week ago Mr. and Mrs. Ray Widner of Upper Applegate took a combination business and pleas ure trip to North Hollywood, Calif., and visited their son, Dari.
