SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Ministerial Group Plans Services For Easier Season The Medford Ministerial asso ciation at its Tuesday meeting outlined plans for the Easter season, and completed plans for a directory of churches to be published soon. The special services commit tee reported that noon-day ser vices will be held during Holy week from'Monday through Fri day at 12:30 fo 12:55 p.m. at the Craterian theatre. A Good Friday service from 12 noon to 3 p.m. will be held at the First Methodist church-. At 2:15 p.m., two services will be held for students of the junior high schools. For the students of McLoughlin junior high the ser vice will be held at the Church of the , Nazarene. For the stud ents of Hedrick junior high the service will be held at the East wood Baptist church. The senior and junior high schools will not be dismissed for the services but all students who wish to attend the services may do so by presenting request from the parents. The program of the Minister ial association was concluded by a film on marriage counseling and a period of discussion led by Mary Vandenberg, counseling consultant. Youth Needed for Missionary Fields ' Methodist mission projects in many areas overseas will be seriously undermanned this year, unless there is a decided response in the next two months by college seniors and gradu ates as term missionaries, per sonnel secretaries of the board of missions of the Methodist church announced this week. ' The board is seeking 25 young men and 25 young .women who will serve three years overseas as missionaries to Japan, Korea, countries of southeast Asia and Latin America. Mid-May is the final date for processing appli cations and a concerted effort is being made this month and extend into March to fill the vacancies. Only 12 have been obtained to date, seven men and five women, it was announced. Most of the needs are in fields of education, evangelism" and social work. . : Persons interested in the pro gram are asked to write at once to the Office of Missionary Per sonnel, 150 Fifth ave. (Brainerd photo) Historic Catholic Church To Be Reopened on Sunday ' Jacksonville Historic St. Joseph's church in Jacksonville will be reopened Sunday, Feb. 19 for regular weekly masses after be ing closed for many years with the exception of masses held once each year in connection with recent Jacksonville Gold Rush jubi lees. Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m., beginning next Sunday and continuing at the same hour each Sunday, the Rev. Nicholas Deis, pastor of Sacred Heart parish, has announced. Ik 'MfMk FATHER BLANCHET .- Organized Schools Apostolic Faith Services Continue Revival services at the Apos tolic Faith church will continue another week and will end Feb. 26, the Rev. C. W. Frost, pastor, has announced. The Rev. Robert Crawford, Portland, general overseer for the faith, and the crew of the missionary vessel, "Lower Light" are conducting the services. A service will be held Satur day at 8 p.m., when moving pic tures will be shown of mission ary work along the coast of Brit ish Columbia and Alaska done by members of the crew. Regu lar services on Sunday are at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 8 p.m., and nightly services Tuesday through Friday, will open at 8 p.m. "Time and Eternity," a Moody Institute of Science film, con cerning the theory of relativity of stars, will be shown at First Baptist church, North Central ave. and Fifth st, Sunday, Feb. 19. The film will begin at 7:30 p.m., according to the pastor, the Rev. James W. Neely. Hum, Pastor i Friday, February 17. 1956 ' 11 The Rev. William McLeod of Sacred Heart parish has been in charge of renovation and will serve as mission priest after its formal opening next Sunday. . The church has an interesting and historical background and is closely tied to the development of the town of Jacksonville and the Rogue valley. t Land Donated Land for the church was do nated by James Cluggage, one of the two men credited with finding the first gold in Jackson ville, according to historical rec ords of Jacksonville's founding. The first Catholic mass held here is said to have been cele brated at a dwelling in 1853. The Rev. James Croke and other clergy visited Jacksonville some time in the 1850s and the church was built in 1858 with funds collected by Father -Croke. The first resident pastor was the Rev. J. T. Fierens, who in 1863, was succeeded by the Rev. Francis. Xavier Blanchet, neph ew of the . first archbishop of Oregon. Under his supervision a boys' school, St. Joseph's, and an academy for girls, St. Mary's, were established. Both schools were directed by the Sisters of the Holy Names. The boys' school was . maintain ed only temporarily and in 1908 the girls' school was moved to Medford. Credited Sisters and priests of the schools have been credited with administration to the sick and dying throughout the duration of a smallpox scourge in Jack sonville in the latter part of 1868. . In 1890 a' small frame church was built in Medford which served as a mission of Jackson ville. In time the parish, one of the first in the archdiocese, was reduced to a mission under supervision of Medford but the Medford -parish is the direct successor. The Rev. Arthur Lane, the late Monsignor Lane, son of the first governor of Oregon, held the Jacksonville pastorate from 1903 until 1905. He was suc ceeded by Father Van Claren beck in 1907. who served as the last resident pastor at Jackson ville. It was during his term that Medford became the parochial center in 1909. The church-has been renovat ed at the request" of many , valley- residents who have an in terest in maintaining the histor ic Jacksonville buildings in their original state. : The structure is made of na tive lumber with heavy timbers mortised and fitted . together without the use of . nails. The bell was cast in Sheffield, Eng land, in 1860, was sent to Mon treal, Can., and was shipped around : the horn ' and carted overland to the town of Jack sonville. The bell is still in good order and will be .used once again to summon church goers to the services. All of the original statuary and vestments were also sent in the same manner from Mon treal. The original statues of Virgin Mary and of St. Joseph, patron saint of the church, are being restored for use. The bap tismal font of native stone will also be used. .
