He bases his study on fossils. Longer Center Spans Predicted for Bridges Fennville, Mich. -XU.P.) Clif ford E. Paine, who designed the Golden ' Gate bridge, predicts bridges ' with longer center spans than the famed San Fran cisco span will be built some day. ; "Development of highways must keep pace with the increas ing needs of automotive trans portation," Paine said. "This will justify construction of bridges at many water barriers where in the past bridges were not feasible for economic rea sons. "Some of these crossings will require long-span bridges. These will lie toll bridges. A few will be built where physical condi tions require extremely long spans. "At present, the longest span in existence is that of the Golden Gate bridge which has a central span of 4,200 feet," Paine said. "Longer spans can be built and undoubtedly will be." , Paine recently moved his en gineering offices from San Fran cisco and Chicago to his native Fennville. Louisiana Tackles Segregation Problem New Orleans (U.R) Louisiana geared for action on two fronts today to fight a federal court ruling that the state's segrega tion laws are invalid. A joint legislative committee of the Legislature announced in Baton Rouge that it would study new legislation to counter the ruling while school officials at tack it in the courts. The legislative committee had already been considering pos sible laws to safeguard segrega tion in private as well as public schools when the ruling was made here Wednesday. Largest Prehistoric Pottery Jar Found Los Angeles (U.R) A Uni versity of California archaeolo gist has reported- finding what may be the largest prehistoric pottery ; : jar r unearthed in the Americas. . ' ..; . . - - The ' king-sized ; jar . was dis covered in the Valley of Mexico by Dr. George Brainerd while on a UCLA expedition. - The jar, is believed to have been a storage facility or possi ble fermentation vessel for pulque an intoxicating beverage still brewed today. The jar is 30 inches high with a diameter of 23 inches, having a capacity of about 35 gallons. The vessel appears to have been buried in the floor of a Toltec house.
