Black Tornado Opposes Pel Cagers Tonight, Saturday Medf ord's Black Tornado makes the big try tonight to wrap up its second consecutive Southern Oregon conference and district- basketball cham pionships while the Klamath Falls Pelicans contend to keep in the race for the diadems and a berth in the state A-l cage tournament. . The two aggregations collide this evening on the Hedrick jun ior high court. Game time is 8:15 p.m. They battle again at the - same hour on Saturday night in the same place. Jayvee games are set for 6:45 p.m. on both occasions. It was indicated this morning that last night's snow storm would not impede travel of the Pelicans to Medford. While Medford and Klamath are contending Grants Pass will be at Ashland tonight and will host the Grizzlies on Saturday in other conference games. Both series this week end are in the crucial category. Grants Pass is out of the running for the league championship but still has a chance for one of two state tourney berths from the district. A Klamath win this - week end and one Caveman loss would put GP out of the run ning. Toss-Up Series Medford defeated the Pels twice at Klamath Falls and vic tory on the KF floor is a major accomplishment. But, while, the Tornado may be slightly favor ed, it has no cinch in the week end series. The conflicts are considered toss-ups. Klamath 4 will bring a team boasting superior height and balance by good smaller men. Medford, however, will put on the floor a crew which has on numerous occasions demonstrat ed ability - :so overcome height disadvantage with furious play under backboards. Reports "irom Klamath Falls J today were that' Coach Don i Peterson plans to start Glenn Koore and Earle Tichenor, two of his three tall men and Orin Perkins, Butch Kimpton and Donn Taucher. That is the com bination which has gone best in practice. Cliff Sutherland was a starter rather than Tichenor last week. Jerry Burke is the man behind Perkins. For Medford Coach Frank Roelandt will pick from among six, Dick McLaughlin, John Foust, Dick Copple, Neil Plum ley, Bob Tisdel and Lloyd Cear- ley. The Black Tornado goes into the series with a 14 win 4 loss record. .Klamath's season stand ing is 10-6. ' " . k Jenkins, making his last 'ap pearance in a major internation al event, grabbed a big lead in the men's compulsory figures Thursday and seemed a shoo-in to complete the triumph in to day's free skating phase of the competition. But even before the 22-year-old Jenkins takes the ice, Miss' Albright and 22 other ice bal lerinas, including Carol Heiss of Ozone Park, N. Y., (will open the women's competition by skat ing the prescribed compulsory figures. Central Pointers Subdue Ashland Central Point Central Point grade school hoopmen grabbed two victories from Ashland teams yesterday. The seventh grade won 33 to 25 and the eighth grade 29 to 22. Pointer eighth graders had quarter leads of 11 to 8, 19 to 16, and 25 to 20. Glenn Cote lead CP with 12 points and Gray got nine for Ashland. CP seventh grade quarter margins were 9 to 5, 21 to 9 and 29 to 19. Bry scon LaCasse scored 17 for Cen tral Point and Pat Cramer eight for the Ashlanders. Traps will open at 10 a.m. A number of local gunners may attend a shoot at Yoncalla on Sunday. The Medford club will be host on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25 and 26 for a sixth annual early spring shoot. It will be Pacific International Trapshooting asso ciation registered. Ray Coleman paced last Sun day's activities at the cl;ib with a 49 out of 50 at 16 yards and 46 out of 50 at handicap range. Martin Clogston and Ed Pease had 47 scores at 16 yards. SF Dons Go After 46th Cage Victory By HAL WOOD United Press Sports Writer San Francisco (U.R) The University of San Francisco Dons, still riding the crest of one of the most remarkable victory strings in sports, go after their 46th s consecutive win tonight without any signs of pressure bothering them... . "We still are playing one game at a time," says Coach Phil Woolpert. "That way we don't worry about the victory string or what would happen if it was broken. ' -; ' "When we talk about the up coming game,' I never under estimate the power of the opposi tion and at the same .time, I never over-rate it. Our boys just go steadily along playing their game the best they can, because they like to win." - v The Dons take on St. Mary's college at Richmond tonight and that should be pretty much of a breeze for this USF club with the professional polish. "When he is through; then Gene Brown will move into his position." : The Dons are just two games away from a cinch berth in the I NCAA play-offs, where their op position will be the UCLA Bruins, in all likelihood. But they don't expect too much trouble there, either. The site will be confirmed at a meet ing of the Southern Oregon Con ference at the Medford hotel on Saturday. NCAA Schools Requested To Adopt Video Plan Kansas City, Mo. (U.R) The NCAA today asked its member institutions to adopt a 1956 tele vision', plan along virtually the same lines as- used last season. Ballots on the plan, which proposes eight national and five regional TV dates, must be post marked by midnight, March 2, to be counted. NCAA executive director Wal ter Byers said that if approved, members of the TV committee would meet early in March to receive proposals from potential sponsors of the national telecasts.
