TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) B Leaguers End Slate Friday Night Final basketball games in the Jackson County B League are slated Friday night and the sea son will have an anti-climax finish. Rogue River will play St. Mary's at Medford, Jacksonville will vie at Butte Falls and Talent will go to Prospect. St. Mary's on Tuesday clinch ed the conference championship. The Crusaders will go on to represent the county in district play-offs. Hoop action concludes Friday for the other members of the loop. Only dispute left in the cir cuit is over third place. Talent has assured itself . of second. Prospect is third and Butte Falls fourth. Butte Falld can knot for third if it beats Jacksonville and Talent licks Prospect. Boyd, 22, and his manager, Bernie Glickman, contended he earned the , chance Wednesday night when he took the best punches of Argentine Eduardo Lausse for 10 rounds and won a majority decision for Lausse's first loss in 33 fights. ' - . . WRESTLER LOSES FINGERS Eugene (U.R) Jim Beaton of Lebanon, a top wrestler on the Oregon Frosh squad, has been lost to , the squad for the rest of the season. Beaton suf fered loss of two fingers on his left hand in a freak automo bile accident. .He was helping friends separate two cars whose bumpers had overlapped near Lebanon when the cars slipped back, into their original posi tions and pinned his hand be tween the bumpers.' Hollingsworth Leads Red Raider; Qu i n te t i n hid i vid ua I Sco r i n g Ashland Bill Hollingsworth leads the Southern Oregon col lege basketball team in five in dividual departments in 21 games played this season. - The ex-Ashland high . ace is top man. for the Raiders in total points, average per game, free throws made, field goal average and rebounds. His point total is 4.18 and he has averaged 19.9 per game. Hollingsworth's free shot total is 148, his field goal ing average is '.482 and he has .picked out a total of 212 re bounds. Lloyd Hoffine is second high scorer with 381 and second high in average with 18.1 per con tests and he leads in the , field goal department with 146 made. MedfordTmbune BLACK TORNADO SCRAPS PELICANS HERE FRIDAY Will Medford high defensive strength, its rugged aggressive ness, its will power and its stir ring hustle pay off for the third and fourth times against Klam ath Falls' superior height and all-around good balance. That is the question today on the eve of a shakedown Southern Oregon Conference basketball series be tween the two schools. The scuffles are set for the Hedrick junior high gym about 8:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday after 6:45 p.m. junior varsity tangles. Coach Frank Roelandt hasn't given any actual indication of what the Medford Black Tor nado has in store for the Pels as both clubs battle for the conferr ence championship. However, de fense could again play a big role. Tactics Pay Off For the last series with the Pels at Klamath Falls, the Tor nado concentrated on defense and let the offense take care of itself. It worked. The result was sweeping control of the boards on one night and a great battle under the buckets on the other along with some blazing hustle and Medford swept the series. The Pels could be anticipating fight and the" planning could be a little different this time. While the Tornado strategy hasn't been revealed, the club has been perfecting its game all around this week. Rough spots have been worked on and re serves are getting more groom ing. Roelandt said that the squad had its hardest workout of the week last night, scrimmaging about a full game. Klamath Falls's height, is rep resented by Glenn Moore,' 6 feet 6 inches, the . Pels' top scorer, Earle Tichenor, 6-5, second high scorer, and Cliff Sutherland, 6-.5. Moore is a likely starter, with either Sutherland or Tichenor also with the opening five: Suth erland opened in the GP series last week but Tichenor also saw duty. ! v,.:; . Choice Among Four For three spots in the line-up there's a choice among four play ers, Jerry Burke and Donn Tau cher, both 5-11; Butch Kimpton, 6 feet, and Perkins, 6-1. Burke, Taucher and Kimpton are the possibles. Taucher, who started the season slowly, is now press ing Moore and Tichenor for the individual scoring lead on the, club. February 16, 1956 Medford has capable strength in Neil Plumley, Dick Copple, Dick McLaughlin and Johnny Foust. Plumley, at a listed 6-4, matches the KF big men, McLaughlin is 6-2, Copple 6-1 and Foust 6-even. Foust had a tremendous series under the boards, against Ash land. To pace the hustle and drive and to spark the ball-hawking there's also Lloyd Cearley and Bob Tisdel. Roelandt has not listed the Medford starters . other than to indicate that the choice will be from among the foregoing six. The coach said that Mike Sterns will not be with the squad this week. He'll be at a church conference. MEDFORD, ROGUE RSVER AAU TOURNAMENT SITES It's all settled who'll be the Grants Pass entries in the sub-district-AAU basketball tourna ment this week end but just where two of the clubs will fit into the play-off brackets was still uncertain today. Quarter-final conflicts are set for Saturday night, February 18, at Rogue River high and for Sun day evening, February 19, at the Medford senior high gymnasium. Camp's Electric, Rogue River Merchants and Wimer will be the GP league entries. Camps has won the GP No. 1 spot in the tourney. Rogue River and Wimer are tied'for No. 2 and No. 3. They have final league games tonight, and if they ' are still knotted, there'll be a Friday play-off or a draw. ; Four Medford Teams Medford Independent Basket ball League entries are Prospect, YMCA and Company A of the National Guard. His selection did not quiet howls of alumni. One group of alumni charged Briggs, former assistant athletic director at the University of Cali fornia, was merely a "rubber stamp" for H. P. (Dick) Everest, university vice president. A spokesman ' for the group said petitions would be circulated de manding that Everett be fired. Briggs denied the charges. BOXERS REMATCHED Portland (U.R) Alton John Bassett, chairman of the Port land Boxing commission, said to day that Peter Mueller and Jim my Martinez, the pair of middle weights who slapped it out here Tuesday night, have been signed for a rematch in Portland for Feb. 28. , Yellow Cab against YMCA in the-first game and Prospect play ing 'Grants Pass No. 3 in the second. . The four winners will meet in the second semi-final round Mon day at the Medford gymnasium. U.R) If wide, smiles are seen on the face of Coach Al Negratti-of the Port land University basketball team these days it isn't ust because his Pilots finally won a game from Seattle University the other night. , Negratti also doubles in brass as coach of the Portland fresh man team. That team in itself is enough to bring smiles to any coach planning for the future. So far the Pilot Frosh have come through with 20 straight victories, including wins over the highly touted Oregon State Rooks and the Oregon Frosh. : Jolley Among Stars r Thus, despite the impending loss 'from this year's varsity of Jimmy Winters and Bob Alten hofen through graduation, the outlook at Portland is bright, indeed. Negratti came to Portland from Cleveland high school where he built up an impressive record. Last-place Illinois Valley will be guest of the Piartes on Friday and the two clubs collide on Sat urday at Cave Junction. After an all-day meeting open to newsmen here Wednesday, both Bell and Cooper indicated they were closer to settling pro fessional gridiron problems of the NFL and Canada's Big Four and Western; Inter-provincial unions leagues. Bell and Cooper proposed sim ilar codes of agreement on such problems as honoring contracts and options of both nation's leagues, banning pre-dated and post-dated ' contracts tendered college : players, curbing any overtures made ; to players al ready under option, and restrict ing any player or coach's activi ties to the team with which he is signed. ; - However, the knetty question of what to do with players who jumped from the NFL to Canada or vice versa was not as eas ily settled.. ... Bell had the full "backing of the 12 NFL club owners to make whatever decision he felt would be best concerning the status of players who jumped contracts. But Cooper must make his rec ommendations to Canadian club owners March 1 at Toronto. Utah, Arizona Seeking Missing Uranium Hunters Kanah, Utah (U.R) Utah officials today joined Arizona officers in a search for two Mid west uranium hunters believed missing in the wilderness of pla teaus and cliffs of : the remote Colorado river country. The two men, Gene Haeusler Milwaukee ,and Kenneth H. El liott, Minneapolis, .have been missing for nearly a month when they took off from Northern Ari zona in their Piper cub plane to prospect the uranium country of Southern. Utah.
