TEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, February 16, 1956 Gore Urges Broadscale Probe info Campaign Contributions Washington U.R) Chairman Albert Gore (D-Tenn.) today urged the Senate Elections sub committee to approve a broad scale, election-year investigation into campaign contributions and lobbying. Gore said he would propose to ,the subcommittee at a morning meeting a -"far wider, more ex tensive" inquiry than that being made by a Senate select , com mittee into the $2,500 campaign contribution offered to Sen. Francis Case (R-S.D.). ? Gore moved ahead with his plans while member's of the se lect committee split sharply on whether they should broaden the Case inquiry to cover the same ground the Gore group was being asked to consider. Such a step could raise a jurisdictional dispute between the elections subcommittee and the select committee headed by Sen. Walter F. George (D-Ga.) that only the full Senate could settle. ' r George, after a conference with Gore Wednesday, said he saw nothing "at this time" to varrant a broadened inquiry by his select committee. But Sen. Negroes Face Charge Of Attempted Murder In Alabama Beating Tuscaloosa, Ala. (U.R) Au thorities charged two Negro bro thers Wednesday night with at tempting to murder a University of Alabama student in . reprisal for the "Autherine Lucy" riots. . The Negroes, John and Arth ur - Washington, both in their 20s, " allegedly beat Samuel P. Taylor, 19, slightly built engin eering student, two nights ago. Circuit Solitictor Olin Zeanah said charges against the broth ers were changed from assault and battery conduct, to attempt ed murder after Investigation of PCA Stockholders Schedule Meeting The 22nd annual stockholders meeting of the Southern Oregon Production Credit administration will be held Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Phoenix Community hall, according to Irvin Patton, secretary-treasurer. The meeting will begin with registration at 10:30 a.m. and dinner will be served at noon'to all ' members, their , wives, and visitors. Dr. Burton Woods, professor of economics from Oregon State college, will be speaker. Paul F. Matson, president of the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank . of Spokane is scheduled to speak on : the relations between the bank and the association, and also discuss the farm prospects for this year. One director . will be elected and a report will be made on business activities last year and the present condition of the as sociation. ; Patten said members will have opportunity to ask questions on any phase of the association. Dinner reservations may be made by calling the local office. Similar meetings are sched uled for Coquille, Feb. 20 and Roseburg Feb. 21; the case Wednesday. Deputy Solicitor Fred Nichol said the charge carries a sen tence of from two to 20 years in prison. The brothers werg moved sec retly from the jail here to Eu ta.v, 34 miles from Tuscaloosa, after the new charges were filed. Police Chief W. C. Tompkins refused to comment on the move. He .said a third Negro, Jimmy Hall, was held as a material witness. Taylor said he was held by one of the Negroes while he was beaten and kicked, and was bruised and shaken by the alleg ed attack. He said the three men accost ed him as he walked" along a Negro residential district toward his quarters in a converted bar racks area on the edge of the campus. One grabbed his arm, he said, and told him, "Let's go. over there and talk." "One of the men held me while the other hit me," Taylor said. "I was scared, so I held my arms over my head arid leaned over.' 'fhen one of them hit me with his fist over the right eye." Charges were filed against the Negroes on the eve of two sched uled meetings of the entire stu dent body and faculty . called by Dr. O. C. Carmichael, uni verity president, to discuss the dismissal of Miss Lucy from the school. Miss Lucy was excluded from further classes because of three days of rioting in which attempts were made to stoneiher. A fed eral court hearing on -j her de mand for . readmission to the campus is set for Feb. 29. . Tickets on Sale for Annual Kiwanis Show Tickets for the eighth annual Kiwanis Kapers are now being sold by all members of the Med- ford service club and are avail able at firms with which Kiwan- ians are associated. The variety presentation of music, gags and colorful produc tion numbers is' scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 29 through March 3, at the senior high school auditorium. Title of the 1956 -show is Holiday Review and holidays of the year will be portrayed. Rehearsals have been under way for more than a week. The show will have all local talent with professional direction of Don Hansen, Lassen Theatrical productions. There will be a special student price for Wednesday night's show and seats will be all gen eral admission that evening. Re served seats will be sold for the other three nights. Those plan ning to attend the show may purchase general admission tick ets now and make arrangements for reserved seats starting Feb. 23 at Barker's Men's store. Grange Juvenile Grange Central Point Juvenile Grange met Feb. 3 with good attendance The subordinate Grange got us a ping pong set, and we had fun with it. We also got a record player,- and we enjoy this too We take this means of thanking the subordinate Grange for mak ing these things possible. ' We want a good attendance on Feb. 17 because we are going to begin work on a program for the subordinate Grange. It will be under the direction of Mrs Lu Floux. The four exceptions are the states of Alabama, Mississippi, South Styles Bridges (R-N.H.) the. George committee's top-ranking Republican, said the . group should go beyond the Case affair and look into the "great deal of pressure" put on members of Congress by groups opposed to the gas bill. . - Bridges mentioned utility and union "lobbies" as among such groups. Second To Call Inquiry Bridges was the second GOP member of the select committee to call for an extended inquiry. Sen. Edward J. Thye (R-Minn.) said earlier he favored looking into any and all contributions bearing on the gas bill. George said the decision would be up to the Senate but that in any event he cannot serve on the special committee much beyond next week. He hopes the inves tigation of the Case incident can be wound up by then. George said he did not think it mattered whether the broad ened investigation is conducted by the special committee or one of the Senate's standing com mitees. . Lanza Testifies In Fake Theft Case Los Angeles (U.R) A county Grand Jury investigation which already has included testimony by singer Mario Lanza resumed today into police charges that furrier Al Teitelbaum "faked" a $280,000 robbery of his swank fur salon. - ; Lanza, a close personal friend of the 40-year-old Teitelbaum, testified yesterday for 45 min utes before the jury. The singer said it was "coincidental" that he drove up to Teitelbaum's swank Beverly Hills fur salon last Dec. 27 only a few minutes after the purported robbery oc curred. "I went there to get a wheel chair for my 83-year-old grand mother," Lanza said. Tried Rear ' Door ; At first Lanza .said, he tried to 'enter through the rear door of the salon but no, one answered his door knocking. Teitelbaum finally admitted him through the front door, he 'said. The furrier was pale and shaking, ' Lanza testified. "They did it again," Lanza quoted the : furrier, - who once loaned him $60,000 when he; needed the money for taxes. "They got me again." ' --' Teitelbaum reported he was robbed of more 'than $130,000 worth of furs in December, 1953. Lloyds, of London-,-however, re fused to pay the claim and the case is in litigation. Beverly Hills police charged Teitelbaum staged the Dec. 27, 1955, robbery- because- he need ed the insurance money to meet business debts.
