February 15, 1956 - i Winners Named by Beauticians The local observance of Na tional Beauty Salon week opened February 12 with a hair Btyling contest and crowning of a beauty week queen. Miss Shirley Kenner, senior at Medford High school, was chosen queen and winners of the styling contest were Glenn Funk, Cook's Beauty clinic, first place; Mrs. Maxine Hammond, Medford Beauty school, second, Mrs. Winnie Weixel, Modern Beauty salon, third. Miss Kenner won the title of queen for having written the winning essay on the topic "Why I Want to Become a Bautician." She received a scholarship from Medford Beauty school and sev eral gifts from local shops affili ated with the Oregon Beauti cian's association. Additional -students winning prizes in the contest were Miss Barbara Edward, Miss Gertie Smith, Miss Glenna Mae John son and Miss Dorothy Good. Monday evening the Medford unit of Oregon Beautician's asso ciation held the monthly meet ing at the Glen Funk home, 340 North Central avenue. The group planned a workshop for Febru ary 27, and subsequent work shops will be held the last Mon day of each month. Through the workshops . it is - believed that association members will im prove their work and learn new and modern styling. Guest Speakers Announced For Jefferson PT A Guest speakers for a meeting of Jefferson Parent-Teacher as sociation Friday, February 17, will be Clifford Hanson, direc tor of the Crater Lake area of Boy Scouts, and Mrs. Tom Ger ety, executive secretary of the Camp Fire Girls. The meeting" will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the school cafe teria. Also on the program will be a film, presented by th-3 Girl Scout organization showing day camp activities. Mrs. Webber's upper grade chorus will present musical selections to open the meeting. . Preceding the session a teacher-parent conference period will be held from 2 to 2:30 p.m. dur ing which all parents are urged to visit their children's -. room and discuss any problems with the teachers. ' It is stated that important bus iness is to be discussed. Parents of preschool age chil dren are invited to use the nur sery provided at a' nominal chaige.. - r : Refreshments will be furnish ed by mothers of children in the fourth-fifth and sixth grades. Association Plans : Luncheon Meeting (n Phoenix Church Phoenix Woman's associa tion of, Phoenix Presbyterian church will meet tomorrow, Thursday, at the church at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. J. O. N. Poling will lead devotions, and the presi dent, Mrs. -Roscoe Owens, will preside at a business session. , Luncheon -will be served at 11:30 a.m. by the committee, Mesdames Walter Bolz, C. A. Smothers, E. R. Claflin and Owens. It is' pointed out that luncheon is being served earlier than usual as a group of women plan to attend the prayer chain services to be held at St." Mark's Episcopal chapel in Medford. The meeting will be resumed in the afternoon as '. soon as the women return, about 1 or 1:30 p.m. ' Miss Virginia Mackenzie, mis sionary who has been living in Japan, will be guest speaker and all women of the congregation are invited to attend.. The annual blue and gold pot luck supper of the Cub scouts will be held Thursday, February 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the church. ; Family night has been post poned until Friday, February 24. First of a film series will be shown. 1 . Episcopal Guild To Sponsor Show "Shady Cove St. Martin's Episcopal guild of Shady Cove held a recent meeting at the home of Mrs. Ray Briggs Long Branch road. Mrs. Jim Hopkins was hostess. J The 11 . members present - dis cussed a variety show which the group will sponsor April 21 in the Shady Cove gymnasium. . Next meeting of the guild will be March 5 at the home of Mrs. R. Mychelby. - World Prayer Day Program Announced by Church Group Hioro Zachoji of the Oregon Department of Education will be guest speaker for the annual World Day of Prayer observ ance to be- held in Medford Fri day, February 17. The observ ance is - being sponsored by Medford Council . of Church Women. - ' The program will be held in Medford Church of the Nazarene Registration Open For Y Classes; Cookery Popular Registration is still open for the copper enameling workshop held in conjunction with the "Homemaker's Holiday" classes at the Medford YMCA on Tues days and Thursdays, the "Y" announces. - During the first class, Mrs. Edgar Sims, instructor, demon ing enamel on copper jewelry. Class members had an opportu nity to make a small piece, using their own designs. The afternoon knitting class also can admit a few more mem bers, according to Miss Grace Smith, instructor. However, en rollment is limited, since Miss Smith is giving, individual in struction. "Members began their first projects, including stoles and dresses, at the session yes terday. The gym-swim classes empha sizing volleyball in the morn ings, beginners' swimming in the afternoons, and volleyball on Tuesday evenings, will accept additional members, according to Donald Day, Y physical di rector, who is instructing the classes. Women interested -in enroll ing in the classes should call the Y to make certain they can.still enroll. The number 2-6295. : Enrollment for the evening class in international cookery is closed, according to Mrs. Alex Tummers, instructor for this class. In order to assure class members that they might re ceive the greatest value possible from, the class, enrollment had to be put on a limited basis, ac cording to the Y offioe. . 1 Campfire Girls Ceremonial Held Members of Ayuzunta group, damp Fire Girls, held a cere monial recently at 832 Palm street" to celebrate- the third birthday , of the group." Twenty one people were present. Mrs. Milton Medcalf of the committee of ' awards -presented, trail seeker rank to. 'Susan Baize, Stephanie Hertager and Janice Taylor. ' Honors earned since Septem ber were presented to Susan Baize, Mary . Margaret Barr, Jacque Chesnut, Stephanie Her tager, Sara Hinkle,. Joanne Holmstrom, Linda Medcalf, Jan ice Taylor, Treva : Toenniges and Ann Younger. Having completed December and January service projects, the group is busy with preparations for the Camp Fire birthday din ner March 9; a window display, and other birthday month activ ities. beginning at 1 p.m. and women from all churches in the valley are invited to attend. Mr. Zachoji is now working with the Klamath Indians and will introduce several members of that tribe during the pro gram. Assisting with the pro gram will be the Rev. R. W. Hum, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, the Rev. Richard M. Jones, pastor of Eastwood Baptist church and the Rev. E. Hiser, Church of the Brethren. Choir members from various churches will lead the singing, and a trio consisting of Mrs. Arthur G. McMillin, Mrs. Her schell Morris and . Mrs. Fred Morlan will be featured in a spe cial number. An offering will be taken to help further the world wide work of forgotten ' and needy people all over the world.' This work is international, interde nominational and interracial. A special Day of Prayer will! be held in the- Camp White chapel at 10 a.m. Friday. It will be conducted by Miss Anna Streed, who will- speak on "Trust." Mrs. Richard M. Jones will sing. , In preparation for the World Day of Prayer, church women will conduct a prayer chain Thursday, February 16. It will be held in the small chapel of St. Mark's Episcopal church be ginning at 8 a.m. with women from various churches of "the council carrying on continuous prayer until 6 p.m. . Valleyview Unit Hears. Program on Art of Pressing "Art of Pressing" was the sub ject presented at the last meet ing of Valleyview Home Exten sion unit.- Mrs. H. L. Planken horn. demonstrated the advant ages of using a "pressing ham" and the correct ways of pressing curved seams, hems, and cordu roy, and also gave other informa tion. ' Mrs. Dee Newton, chairman, reminded members to start plan ning for the coming spring festi val, held each year in Central Point. After the business meeting, Mrs. Robert Rosenbaum led the group in singing and a game. Luncheon served by Mrs. Floyd ' Underhill and Mrs.-Phillip Hoyland. Mrs. Lloyd Ber nardi won a prize. Club and Lodge Plan Meetings; Dinner Announced Wenonah club will meet at the home of Mrs. H. Rammin, 831 West Twelfth street Thurs day, February 16, at 1 p.m. for dessert and cards, Weatonka council, Degree of Pocahontas will meet at Red man hall Friday, February 17, at 6:30 p.m. A covered dish dinner will be held for families and friends, of Pocahontas members. It will be followed by a business meeting for the council at 8 p.m., and the evening will conclude with a program of games. Members attending are asked to take "white elephants." Visitors Attend Last Meeting of Artists' Society The Februarv Southern Oregon Society of Ar-j lists was neid at Hedrick Junior High school in Medford, Febru ary 8, with the society's chair man, Dr. E. O. Muhs of Camp White, presidmg. Guests presented at the meet ing included Mrs. Florence O. Bailey, art instructor for Grif fin Creek school, Miss Janine Norlander, who is a niece of Mrs. Ruth Tucker and resides with her in Medford, Mrs. A. C. Cum mines. Ashland. Mrs. Marinrie Hopkins, Miss Rosalee Twedell and Mrs. iiarry Marx, all Med ford. The new constitution and by laws, drafted for the group by the chairman, were accepted as recommended by the committee. Mrs. Vola Tolman, Gold Hill artist, was made honorary mem ber until such time as she may be able to resume active membership. Paintings selected for exhibit by the group included an oil by Mrs. Elizabeth Sheffield which will be shown in Barker's and which-is a portrait of a child en titled "Stetson and Levis." Purucker's Piano house will show "Study in Brass", a still life by Miss Kathie Fonkin, art instructor of Hedrick school, and on display at Burgess Paint Store will be a scene from Hart Moun tain in Lake county and a snow scene by Harry Marx. A program presented by the chairman, Mrs. Enid Rankin, featured a lecture on varying types of technique and on cer tain phychological phases . of painting by a Medford artist, Clifford Platz. A resolution was presented to the group by Mrs.- Elizabeth Sheffield on behalf of the Rogue Flood Control and .Water Re serve association, and it was agreed by the members ' that Mrs. Sheffield be appointed to represent ' the society in her work with the flood control program. It was announced that the group will continue to hold its monthly meetings at Hedrick school, during the current school term. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Ruth Tucker, Mrs. Alta Kelley and Mrs. Ada Andrews. An invitation to exhibit a painting each month in the Med ford Public library was accepted by the society. Bethel Members Elect Delegates To Grand ; Session Central Point Miss Sally El den and Miss Kay Askwith were elected delegates to grand ses sion at a meeting of Bethel 38, Job's Daughter, February 9. Each member brought a val entine with a quarter enclosed to send to the Korean orphans the bethel helps to sponsor. Baskets of pussy willow and jasmine decorated the bethel room and the serving table was arranged with hearts and flow ers in the Valentine motif. Deco ration committee was the Misses Helen and Suzanne Hood and Mrs. Hood. On the table decora tion and refreshment cemmittee were Sally and Mrs. Elden, Mar ilyn and Mrs. Watson; Marlene and Mrs. Burelson. fV The next meeting on February 23 will be junior bethel night. The guardian council of Bethel 38 will meet February 20, 8 p.m., at the home of bethel guardian, Mrs. A. M. Setness. Favorite Classic! Large Audience Enjoys Annual High School Play If audience response indicates the success of a play,, then the annual senior class play which opened in Medford High school auditorium Tuesday night is a success. The large audience be gan to laugh during the first moments of the play, and kept it up throughout the entire six scenes., The class is presenting "Dear Ruth," a fast-paced comedy hy Norman Krasna and it follows the high standard which the school has set in the past for dramatic productions. It is di rected by Bob Stedman, who consistently turns out excellent student productions. Krasna uses the stresses and emotional strains of war times as a basis, for -his entertaining story about a soldier who re turns home from duty overseas determined to marry a girl he thinks has been writing him let ters. The amusing situations pro vided by a romantic teen -age sister, a jealous fiance and in terested parents keep the aud ience well entertained for two hours. Jack Gregory plays Judge Harry Wilkihs, the father, and Joanne Martin is the wife and mother. Larry Gants is Albert Kummer, the fiance who has to stand around and watch another man kiss "his girl."
