SIXTEEN -MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, February 14, 195S World Traveler Discusses Trip Which Cost Only $80 The "man m the street" is friendly the world around, ao cording to a young American who sooke for Rogue Valley Knife and Fork club last night. Robert Christopher, who trav eled around the world on $30, spending about a dollar a day, said he visited in 17 countries and learned that when he ex tended friendship, it was invar iably returned. Young Christopher, still in his 20's, was given S80 and 50 rolls of film by Collier's magazine to use for the round-the-world ad venture. When he returned to New York 84 days later he had 60 cents left; the taxi fare prov ed to be only 45 cents, so he tipped the driver the remaining 15 cents. Unpleasant Incident Young Christopher said he had been told no visas were neces sary in Jordan but this proved to be untrue and he was arrested three times as a result. He dis played a book of 65 visas and travel permits which had been required in the 65 countries. Another unpleasant incident resulted when he traveled to the Persian-Russian border at one point planning to take pictures only to find upon his arrival that the Russians, across the bor der, already knew of his ap proach and had warned Persian officials that he must be turned back. ' , Christopher spoke particular ly of his deep pleasure in be ing able to visit such places as Damascus, oldest city in the world, and to see such sights as the Taj Mahal in India. This latter country and the Himalaya mountains provide the most beautiful scenery anywhere, he declared. He also spoke at length of the "Old Silk Road" in Per sia, one of the oldest thorough fares in the world and said to be most dangerous because of ban ditry. . The speaker said he found It alians to be the friendliest of all in their attitudes toward Ameri cans, and that the Greeks were the most grateful for American aid in post-war rehabilitation. The young man displayed robes, headdresses and arms which he brought home with him. Christopher was introduced by Eric Allen Jr., president of the club.
