t - ' ' SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Monday, February 13. 1958 Few Brave Men Ready To Set Up for Winter On Ice of Antarctic By JOSEPH L. MYLER United Press Correspondent " ;. Washington (U.R) A few men, not more than 200 in all, are getting ready to hole up for the winter at the bottom of the world. ' Tor nearly eight months they will live like moles, isolated from the world in lonely scat tered camps on the Antarctic ice. In another month they will be the only ones remaining of an Antarctic population that hit an all-time record peak of about 2500 during January. Explorers To Leave , .. Survey and base-building ex peditions from eight of the 11 nations planning scientific work in Antarctica during the 1957-58 International Geophysical Year (I.G.Y.) are preparing to with draw temporarily, leaving only token forces behind. ; They are pulling out because the world's wickedest weather is getting worse and won't im prove for another 32 weeks or so. Around April 1 the sun will sink over the edge of the 6,000,000 square mile South Polar continent and stay there for nearly five black months. Temperatures Fall Before the sun rises again in August, and before the start of the Antarctic summer in Octo ber, temperatures will fall to 60, 70, possibly 100 degrees be low zero. Blizzards borne on winds' blasting at upwards of 100 miles an hour will strive to obliterate all of man's works at the bottom of the world. 1 , i Nevertheless, human beings will : brave out the Antarctic winter. .There will be 76 Ameri cans at Little America on the Ross Ice Shelf about 700 miles from the South Pole, 90 at Mc Murdo Sound 400 miles to the west of Little America, 17 Brit ons across the continent on the Weddel Sea Coast, and perhaps small parties at scattered bases of other nations elsewhere in the earth's last great "empty quarter." Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Pres. Correspondent ' Hollywood (U.R) Raymond Massey this Saturday night will glue on a beard and a false nose, clap on a wig, and once ; again play ADranam j-.in-coin a leg end he has no i n te n tion of avoiding. CBS-TV is launching an unusual "spec- Aline Mosbr tacular" a flO-minute color version of tjie best-selling book, "The Day Lin coln Was Shot." Lillian Gish plays Mary Todd. Comedian Jack Lemmon, in the most off-beat casting of the year, portrays John Wilkes Booth. : Massey, of course,, is portray ing Lincoln again, a role that has haunted, him for 16 years; But Massey not only doesn't mind, he's happy about it. 'I Like' Lincoln' "I like Lincoln, and please say that," Massey told me before rehearsals for the show.- "Re cently I was misquoted as saying my new TV spy series "would get me away from Lincoln. , I never said that." The deep-voiced actor starred in 'Abe Lincoln in' Illinois" in New. York for two years and also toured with the play. His film version was released in 1939. . : "'; "Down the years I've received letters about Lincoln," - he mused. "It's funny, the - identi fication : you get. . Nobody has played Lincoln as much as I have. Four years ago I did him on "The Pulitzer Prize Theater', on TV. And I've done a radio version of the play, oh, four or five times, on Lincoln's birth : day." . Actor Dons Beard Massey wore a beard at . tached with a rubber band only . for the last - scene of the play, But the TV story is about an older Lincoln, so he will be bearded. ", ; "And I'll play him different ly," Massey added, "As he's had four years of a""tremendous bur den." ;' The stately actor claims being attached to Lincoln never , has hurt his career. He has played Pygmalion on the stage, count less villains in pictures and was outstanding this year as the father in "East of Eden." "But there's one thing I do been named David William, is mind the corny cracks," he sighed. "There's one that does, 'Massey won't be satisfied until he's assassinated,' now, really!" Cabinet Authority On President Urged Washington (U.R) Former .President Hoover believes the Cabinet should have authority to decied when a President is unable to carry on, He also thinks the vice presi dent should have the power to step in, if the President is de clared incapacitated, and exer cise "the executive power."
