said. "I suppose in 1913 he was
making close to S10 or $12 a
week. I wanted to help."

State Totaled 821
Salem Man-caused fires in
Oregon forests totaled 821 dur
ing the 1955 season, more than
the previous year but below the
five-year average of 885 fires,
according to the annual report
of the Keep Oregon Green asso
ciation issued by Executive Sec
retary Albert Wiesendanger.
The report pointed out that
while the season as a whole was
not too serious, hazardous weath
er in late August and the first of
September contributed to an out
break of fires by lightning which
resulted in considerable losses.
The number of fires fought
by various protective organiza
tions mcucaiea mat 445 . were
on state forestry department
lands and its cooperating asso
ciations, 294 in national forests,
55 in Indian reservations 25 on
bureau of land management
lands, including grazing dis
tricts, and two in Crater Lake
National Park.
Wiesendanger pointed out that
one of the important parts of
the KOG program is the Green
Guard, a youth organization
sponsored by KOG. During 1955,
11,757 youngsters joined the
group, bringing the total enroll
ment to 77,000 since it was or
ganized in 1942.
State Income Taxes
May Indicate Drop
Salem U.R) State income
taxes may show1 a drop because
of lower farm incomes but the
state may come out with a small
"cushion" in the year ahead.
State Sen. Rudie Wilhelm Jr of
Portland, told the Oregon State
Farmers Union here Friday.
Wilhelm is chairman of the
" Legislative Interim committee
on Taxation. . He said "Unless
we increase expenses more than
normal, the present tax , struc
ture will carry us along."

learning. And right in the
middle of his reaching he met
and wed Isabelle Nulton. Mitch
ell had a chance to buy $1000 in
stock of a chain grocery. He
went to a bank in Rahway, N.J.,
and asked to borrow the money.
. '. "I must have looked either
brazen or honest," he said, "but
the banker went along with me.
"That went along pretty well
until the bubble broke and in
1927 I was not only busted but
$18,000 iri debt," Mitchell said.
"It took me from 1927 to 1941
to get well. I drove trucks and I
loaded lumber and I sold wood
by the stick."

beating he received at the hands of two private patrolmen.
Entering a rear door of auditorium in Stockton, Calif, to
cover the University of San Francisco-College of Pacific
basketball game, Feary was admitted by head usher Dwight
Curtis. One of the officers tried to stop him and as Feary,
loaded with camera equipment, attempting to explain he
always entered this door on assignment, patrolmen Elden
Smith and S. W. Allen forced him back to the door. In
ensuing scuffle, Feary's nose was fractured and he was
knocked unconscious. He required hospitalization.

gation was asked to assist, offi
cers in tracking down the per
son who sent a letter and $500
to Chief Justice Frederick G.
Hamley in an effort in influence
a decision by a five-member
department of the high state
court.
".- Hamley said a Western Union
messenger delivered an envelope
to the court clerk . Friday. It
contained $500 and a typewrit
ten letter to the effect the money
was a "campaign contribution"
to . the judges, and $4,500 more
would be forthcoming if . the
court upheld judgement in a
Seattle lawsuit case up for ap
peal. The case concerned an appeal
by a Seattle man on a judgment
made by King county superior
court in Seattle awarding $20,
000 in attorney's fees on a tax
case. - ' '

Real Estate Suit
Portland (U.R) Rep. Edith
Green (D-Ore.) has won out in
a suit against her involving a
real estate commission, of $1,850.
Circuit Judge James W. Craw
ford ruled in Mrs. Green's favor
in a suit brought by Francis L.
DeHarpport. The suit was based
on sale of property which Mrs.
Green owned and had listed in
the fall of 1953 with the plain
tiff. ;
The suit claimed that DeHarp
port's realty firm had listed a
home owned by Mrs. Green for
sale and that .when the firm
produced a buyer Mrs. Green
refused to go through with the
deal. Mrs. Green claimed condi
tions of the sale were unaccept
able to her.
