Use Our Heads To the Editor: This is written in regard to the letter of F. J. Clifford in Sunday's paper. Al ways find him interesting and logical. However this time I am puzzled and would like to know where he picked up this Russian that talked German instead of his native tongue, when he ex claimed "scheming m i t d e r brain." Those two words in the center are as German as can be. T should know as that is the only language I knew the first 25 years of my life and have my doubts that I ever could learn Russian or Chinese for that matter. Could it be mistaken identity? . As for -scheming with the brains I think is an asset instead of a fault. Of course it often goes under a different name, like diplomacy, strate'gy, business acumen, etc. It's used by all smart people. As to the Russian not much inclined to fight, what intelligent, sensible human be ing is? However, he will prove himself just as patriotic as any other nationality and defend his country when need be. That he has proven more than once. As to Napoleon losing in Rus- PLANT THESE NOW! In the first instance it was .the ele ments, bitter cold and ground covered with deep snow, no food as the retreating Russians had destroyed everything behind them. Moscow was deserted. There was nothing left but re treat and thousands of frozen bodies littered the road on the long march back. As to 'the battle of Waterloo, how well I remember when one teacher told us how it swayed back and forth all day, and Wel lington in despair exclaimed "I wish it were night or the Prus sians would come." No sooner had he "said it, when the sound of General von Bluecher's can nons could be heard. Inspired with new courage, Wellington's men fought on, Von Bluecher at tacked from the rear and short ly thereafter Napoleon surren dered. Before I left Germany, Russia was still an illiterate, backward people, blighted by superstition and orthodox religion, as evi denced by the enormous influ ence the monk Rasputin exer cised over the imperial family. To think that now she has be come the second most powerful nation on earth is truly amazing. If you would like to get a true picture of this enormous change, read News Week for Feb. 6, "In dustrial War Can Russia Win?" Here I submit is our greatest task and would behoove us to do more "scheming mit der brains to retain our Freiheit. William Krauss Route 1, Box 373 - Gold Hill, Ore. . afery, bat are we? There has only been one man on this earth that was really civilized and that was Jesus Christ, and perhaps John the Baptist, because I do not think Christ would let any one else baptize Him. Because truth and that greatness of those two men spelled civilization and truth When we get all of us civilized and live the truth we will get somewhere and not till then. I was left an orphan at six years old and made my own way in this cold old world, a news kid to start. I would not tell how much I was abused but I won out, as often as I took it on the chin. I have returned good and helped others. If I had not spent so much of my earnings I could have been a rich man to day. Of course I tried to live up to the truth and not overcharge people in all my designing and building business. I get a small pension and I try to build a few cabinets now and then as I can not do too much as I am past 78 years and not very well. have had no trouble with man- made law and have been around a great deal in all these years. We could all be enjoying a bet ter place to live if we were civil ized. , William Ross Sharp ' 26 Portland ave. Medford, Ore. Civilization and Truth To the Editor: You know we are not civilized if we were a case like that poor colored girl, wanting nothing better than an education. My heart goes out to the Negro, as hundreds of them have worked for me in Panama and I found many bright men among them. Our government has just been nasty to the Negro and Indian. I have, heard so many nasty things done to the poor Negro in the south it has been a fright. A real ' master builder and workman, a pal of mine, traveled al through the south many years ago and he could tell some hair-raising stor ies how the whites treated the Negroes. I have had over 100 men working for me at one time, a fine lot of men, good work men. We are not civilized. If we were the terrible things that are going on in the whole world to day would not be. We are sup posed to be reclaimed from sav- Competent Bricklayers To the Editor: A statement in Wednesday's paper attributed to some local builders concerning the lack of. competent brick- masons in the area needs some clarification. In- the Ashland, Medford-, Grants Pass' area there are no less than seven fully qualified masonry contractors, each with a crew competent enough to start and finish any masonry job without delay. Incompetency is a broad charge. A public statement such ' as this isn't likely to prove bene ficial to our craft. Your Medford Bricklayers Lo cal No. 9 guarantees its mem bers work. If you plan to build of brick or block contact a local masonry contractor. For beauty, economy, per manence, build with brick or block! ; James W. Stevens Secretary Local No. 9, Oregon Route 2, Box 158-a Central Point, Ore. Groups and Cliques? .- To the Editor: As long as we have lived in Medford, special interest groups and cliques have been leading the herd around by their noses and making them like it. We have to live in' city limits when we prefer to stay in county, and one thing after an other is done to increase taxes. Now. they. want, to put poison in out wonderful drinking water and make us pay for it. Why must dental caries - in 7f. mi ii ii hi -- - .,. It still is a controversial Question with sosne experts claiming that a percentage will suffer from mal formation of teeth due to the fluorides. ; Everyone is free to add fluor ine to his drinking water if he so desires and there is no valid reason why it should be made a matter of compulsion. Mrs. Dacia Jones, Barnett rd. Medford, Ore. fS ! I I Political Malaikey To the Editor: Hold every thing! The battle is on. Not be tween flesh and blood Democrats and Republicans, but the unseen forces of "creeping socialism" that stems from someplace on high. Colorado's former gover nor Dan Thornton must have gotten into Tom Dewey's 1948 batch of campaign speeches and hauled out one titled "the heavy hand of government." How gul lible can politicians really get? Socialism cannot take root in any country that has a middle class society. How can socialism take root in the United States when we can produce and con sume goods and services of $350 billions annually? How can so cialism become a reality with $7 billions of surplus food, over 15 thousand different businesses operating full tilt, employing 65 million people, which is an av erage of IV2 members of each family working at the highest wage rates that have been known since man has been upon the earth. Where is one single sign of socialism whenever the people of this country pay more money in personal income taxes than the total revenue 4 of any other, country in the world? Sure, there are many things wrong with our system. The most prominent one is that we have far too many people in low income groups. That's why some forms of subsidies and controls are necessary, but that doesn't mean socialism. As long as Amer ican industry is operated for profit and remains in private hands, and as long as we have the consuming power of the 22 millions of middle class families, socialism is about as far off as the. return of the side saddle or the wooden churn. Far too many people listen to political malar key and not ' enough common sense. Earl Allen, '. 176 South Stage rd., Medford, Ore. Sunday, February 12, 1958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE The Old Marilyn Monroe Still Around; Plans To Co-Star With Laurence Olivier New York-JOJ.R) The "nei Marilyn Monroe was unveiled Thursday but another, unsched uled unveiling left little doubt that the old Marilyn Monroe was still around. Miss Monroe, a blooming young actress who wants to do dramatic parts, met the press along with her new associate, Sir Laurence Olivier. For a time everything went along just fine and the "new" Monroe discussed a picture she plans to make with Olivier as photographers . duly recorded the spectacle of a black sheath dress that covered roughly the lower two-thirds of her famous frame. Old Marilyn Busts Out , ' Then, a strap broke and the old Marilyn Monroe busted out all over. There was a near stampede and flash bulbs popped in daz zling profusion. . . Someone (a -woman reporter) produced a safety pin but the ice had broken . along with the strap and things took on the at mosphere of a Mardi Gras. Amidst the assertion of pho tographers that they could die happy, Olivier loudly volunteer ed to take -his coat off, too. No one took up his offer so Chevalier clung to his dignity Democratic Give-Away - 1 To the Editor: While millions of independent liberal voters sadly looked on, the party of Jefferson staged as reasonable a facsimile of a Republican "give away" as one could wish. For on the 7th day of Febru ary," in the year of our Lord 1956, the Democratically con trolled Senate of . the United States, 53 to 38, handed the al ready over-subsidized and under- regulated oil and gas industry a fabulous fortune, thereby setting the stage so the Republican party could neatly turn the tables and place the Democrats in the posi tion of sponsoring a "give away," should the President have cou rage enough to veto the bill. Of course he will not but one cannot help contemplating the immense possibilities in such a veto. Ike, champion of the "little guy" sounds like something out of Arabian Nights. Meanwhile, "The hungry sheep look up and are not fed." Lee Wilmeth Ashland, Ore. Likes Osteopathic To the Editor: Having been recently -for 11 days a patient in the Medford Osteopathic hos pital, I wish to take this oppor tunity to publicly express my sincere and deeply felt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, labora tory, and office staff for their kindly and efficient handling of my case. I. have nothing but good words for the Medford Osteo pathic hospital and its staff. The Rev. H. R. Bulman Route 1, Box 316 A Medford, Ore. Against Fluoridation To the Editor: We are glad that the Jackson County Medical association has openly stated its position regarding fluoridation. We wonder just how much indi vidual investigation has been made by those voting for this resolution. Conflicting articles published" in their own journals ,indicate that there is far from 100 per cent agreement among the pro fession as to whether or not such endorsement is justified. Reference is often made that those who oppose fluoridation are religious fanatics or cite Christian Scientists as. leaders of this opposition. This is not true in Medford. The Mormons op pose the use of any beverage or any substance injurious to the body. Pope Pius XH, speaking to delegates attending the First International Congress on the Histopathology of the Nervous System in 1952 on the theme, "The . Moral Limits of Medical Research and Treatment," said in substance that man has no right to destroy himself. He concluded, "I refer here to the tendency of fluorides to cause abortion. Do you not think the Catholic church, as well as other churches, would object to this result of fluoridation as a sin"? . It should be remembered that chlorine does its work as a bac teria killer and can be aerated Phoenix Church To Honor Boy Scouts Phoenix National Boy Scout Sunday -will be observed in the Phoenix Presbyterian church today during the 11 a.m. service. Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will be guests of honor. - The Rev. E. R. Volkman will give the sermon, "Samson, the Strong Man Who Was Weak." The Men's club will hold a meeting Monday, Feb. 13, pre ceded at 6:30 p.m., by a potluck dinner. William Green, a local revenue officer, will speak. . A meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening, Feb. 14 for teachers of the Sunday school when plans will be made to dis cuss work for -the next few months. All teachers and officers are invited. It is pointed . out that Mrs. Lloyd Schmelzer recently was appointed to assist with work in the primary department. Ear lier it was announced that she was appointed as superinten dent. Mrs. Walter Bolz was su perintendent last year. Report CO Per Cent Of Tax Collections A total of $4,451,484.24, or 80.2 per cent, of county taxes have been collected for the cur rent year, according to County Treasurer Karl Janouch. Of the total, Jackson county received 9.8 percent; state for estry board, .1 per cent; cities, 12.5 per cent; irrigation districts, 4; school funds,- 70.8; and wa ter, sanitary and rural fire dis tricts, 1.9. " Janouch reminded taxpayers who did not pay their taxes in full on or before Nov. 15, 1955 that second quarterly payments are due on Feb. 15. Two more quarterly 'payment - dates re main for the 1956 tax payments after Feb. 15. or boiled out of water; boiling fluoridated water only concen trates fluorine and aeration has no effect whatever. - Proponents refer to fluorides occurring naturally in water. These are calciiyn fluorides and are assimilable by the body in small amounts; while sodium fluoride, which is what is being proposed for use here, is a metal lic, synthetic, inorganic poison, and even in minute amounts it will accumulate in the body and do damage as the concentration increases. Sodium fluoride inhib its the -calcium in our bodies, taking it from the blood stream and bones, and this attraction has been blamed for the increase in cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and kidney ailments. This state ment is a matter of record in test cities, a "number of which have voted fluoridation out after having tested it thoroughly. If fluoridation is desired, why may not the public .health ser vice supply fluorine tablets with proper directions for use to all those who desire that children take them? : Children of all groups, , rural . as well as city, would then have access to what ever beneficial effects might be possible; Expense would be neg ligible, and . good or ill results would be easily determined, thus leaving pure water for those who desire it. I suggest we had better un wrap ourselves from our cloak of smugness and take another look at the problem. Oftentimes, a fighting minority is right. We feel that the public health service has done and is doing a terrific job, but in this instance they are misquided and misin formed. . J. Verne Shangle v .- 1445 Kings Highway Medford, Ore. J until the tumult died down and the strap was pinned up. "No leg pictures of Miss Mon roe, boys" he cautioned photog raphers, "from now on, she's too ethereal." . The news conference reveal ed, among other things, that Miss Monroe has hired Olivier to star in a film, "The Sleeping Prince," being produced by Miss Monroe. She said she will co star, using the new dramatic techniques she has learned in New York's exclusive Actors' studio. Asked if she still wants to do Dostoyevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov," Miss Monroe said: "I don't want to play the broth ers Karamazov. I want to play Grushenka. She's a girl." Brilliant Comedienne Asked his opinion of Miss Monroe's acting ability, Olivier said: 'Miss Monroe is, in my' opinion, a brilliant comedienne and therefore an extremely good actress." "I hope we produce a movie in London. I've never seen. Europe before," Miss Monroe said. "If I go I'll see Dame Edith Sitwell.
