County Stockmen Slate Discussion Of Various Items A variety of livestock prob lems will be discussed at the annual meeting of the Jackson County Stockmen's association Monday from 10 ajn. to 4 p.m in the Central Point grange. The president's address by James C. Miller Jr., will open the meeting. Others on the pro gram include Bruce Boldenow, Dixie lane, -who will discuss ex periences in the range summer school sponsored by the North west section of the American So ciety of Range Management; Mark Lawrence, grazing super visor for the bureau of land man agement; Jay F. Grant, Rogue River national forest, who will discuss range reseeding in 1955; and Don Smith, Red Bluff, Calif., range bull classification work. Reports Planned, A report on feeder cattle sae will be made by Gordon Stan ley, Merton Bradshaw, Clayton Charley and Fred Off enbacher, Representatives of the Oregon Cattlemen's association will dis cuss a state beef commission proposal and Dr. A. G. Beagle, Portland, and Henry Owens, chairman of the disease control committee, will discuss progress in disease control. . Mrs. JDave Campbell, Bly, will discuss the Cow. Belle's or ganization and activities for live stock promotion. Luncheon will' be served in the Grange dining rpom follow ing election of officers and di rectors. This year's officers, in addition to Miller, are Warren Bayliss, vice-president; Frank Preston, treasurer; and County Agent W. B. Tucker, secretary. Trichinosis Cases Reported in County Two cases of trichinosis, one each in Medford and Jackson ville, were reported last week to the public health department. The disease is spread from eat ing insufficiently cooked infect ed pork, v , Mumps lead the-communicable diseases in Jackson county dur ing the week ending Feb. 4 Eight cases were reported in Rogue River and one each in Medford and Evans Valley. Volk will open a series of services Feb. 15 at 7:30 pm. at the Medford First Church of the Nazarene, at Holly and. First sts. Rev. Volk has had more than 20 years ex perience in the field of evan gelism. Services will last through next Sunday. Lee Mansveld, Pasadena, Calif.; will be special singer at services. : . CP Collects $1,970 For March of Dimes Central Point The greatest March of Dimes fund collected here in recent years totaled $1, 970.36, Richard Stratton, Cen tral Point March of Dimes chair man reported recently. , The annual January drive in Central Point and vicinity is sposored by the Central Point Lions club. , Crater High school received the Jackson county trophy for the school collecting the most money for the MOD campaign. The school collected $907.76 with its Teens Against Polio drive. Dianne Clark was chair man. The junior class raised a total of $262.21 to win the Cen tral Point Merchant's trophy, awarded to the class raising the highest amount for the MOD drive. ' ." Peck Brothers Robbed Of $1,424 Thursday Cash and checks amounting to $1,424.43 were taken Tuesday night from a filing cabinet of Peck Brothers, tire sales and service firm on Crater Lake highway. ' . Investigating sheriff's depu ties said burglars forced open the cabinet and removed $380 cash and $1,044.48 in checks from a cash box. Nothing else was reported missing. May Establish Mint Control Are Here Establishment of a mint con trol area in Jackson and Jose phine counties to produce certi fied mint planting stock, was discussed here last week by pros pective growers and a represen tative from Oregon State col lege. . Some 400 acres of peppermint is grown on Riverview farms in Josephine county, for com mercial oil production, accord ing to assistant 'county horticul tural agent Don Berry. Several farmers in this area are consid ering the crop, he said. , i A one-fourth acre plot of mint grown last year by Andrew Ste vens, Soutb Pacific highway, showed promise, Berry said. The establishment of a control area here would require growers in the two counties to control and attempt, to eradicate diseases and pests which are confined mainly to the product. Hearings by the state depart ment of agriculture would be required if growers in the two counties decide on the control area. Bank President To f, Speak at Meeting Fred A. Knutseiii new presi dent of the Federal Land bank, will speak at the annual meet ing of the Southern- Oregon Na- 1 ' jit Seek Volunteers For Heart Fund Campaign A request for Heart Fund vol unteers to take part in a house' to-house drive in Medford on the afternoon of Heart Sunday, Feb. 26, was announced Friday by Mrs. Earl B. Bigalow, Heart Sunday chairman. Volunteers will be assigned 15 to 25 homes in his or her imme diate neighborhood, according to Mrs. Helen Apple, and in many instances it will be possible for the assignment to be completed within an hour. Kapers Rehearsals Into Full Swing Rehearsals are now in full swing for the annual Kiwanis Kapers show,. Director Don Han sen of Lassen : Theatrical pro ductions has reported. He said that all talent from outside the Medford . Kiwanis club for the production of mu sic, gags arid, dancing has been cast and that casting of Kiwan ians and their wives is almost completed. Rehearsals are now being conducted afternoons and evenings on a six days per week basis -. The Kapers will be presented Feb. 29 and March 1, 2 and 3 at the senior high auditorium. Theme of this year's mirthful show is "Holiday Review." A number of holidays through the year will be portrayed, includ ing Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays, ' Valentine's day and Easter. There will be a Mexican holiday ' scene ; and an ocean, cruise. Early rehearsals give a bright outlook -for the show,r Hansen stated. He praised the work of the Kiwanis singing chorus around whom much of the show is built this year. Hansen said that the high school girl and "secretary" chorus are working hard in practices. Dr. Taylor illustrated his talk with colored slides, showing por tions of the old trail as it appears today, and the terrain traveled by the pioneers on their way west in wagon trains. Ashland CD Director Submits Resignation ' Ashland Col. H. R. Jordon has resigned as civil df ense di rector for Ashland. His letter of resignation Was submitted to the Ashland city council Tuesday, and became effective Jan. 31.
