(Register-Guard photo), Garden Writer Calls Attention To Native Plants By MARK M. TAYLOR (Salem Garden Writer) A visit to southern Oregon last week served to remind us of ' the wealth of . native plant material growing in . this state that is suitable for use in the home landscaping plan. Perhaps one of the most con spicuous native shrubs .seen growing on the hillsides along the Pacific Highway from Grants Pass to Medford was the fc-ne we commonly call Manzanita but which, to the botanist, is Arctostaphylos Tomentosa. At this time of year its foliage is conspicuous with its unusual ' yellow-green shade and, grow ing profusely among groves of Madrona trees (Arbutus Men ziesii), the effect - was most pleasing. Manzanita, while it does reach a pretty good size is, usually, , compact, well branched and of rounded form. Manzanita is a close relative of Arctostaphylos Uva-ursi, com monly called "Kinnickinnick," a most useful plant as a ground cover. The Madrona .trees were strik ing with their exfoliating bark leaving strips of orange-red, add ing another color tb the inter esting native scene. This ; tree also bears clusters of bright orange berries, in the fall that are most pleasing in appearance. Our visit to this part of the state served to remind "us - that we have right here in Oregon some-of the world's finest native plants but, unfortunately we are so close to them we overlook their ' beauty ' and usefulness in our home plantings. We urge home owners to give consideration to the use of these two beautiful native plants, though we do suggest, purchas ing plants from, your nursery man lest you violate a state law in trying to remove them from their native home. fL Club to Give Skit in Gold Hill Members of FL club, of Olive Rebekah lodge will, plan a skit during a meeting Monday, Feb ruary 13 at ,8 p.m., in the home of Mrs. Lawrence . Parsley is noble grand. .At a. recent meeting of. the lodge', the noble grand and Mrs. Wilmer, Bailey, who were in charge of arrangements for the Mothers march for the March of Dimes', drive, reported that $181.75 was collected. They also expressed appreciation to- per sons of the vicinity who donated and to the Rebekahs who gave their time. The lodge and the Past Noble Grands club added a contribu tion other than the march.
