SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE JS1 IIP Growth of lhe Grades The first primitive, effort at .segregation of West Coast lum ber into specific groups of grades was made at the Simpson saw mill, Gardiner, Ore., in 1850 The grades were termed "floor ing," "selects" and "refuse." Tne latter grade term was applied to dunnage lumber for the cargo shiris in Pacific trade of that era - In the period of 1849-1852, the great gold-rush boom brought up a variety of uncontrolled con struction at San Francisco, ana many fires. Five of the fires be came major conflagrations. The last, in 1852, reduced 25 blocks of the new business district to ashes, and burned docks by the mile. Soon lumber was selling at $500 .per thousand board feet. Sailing, ships swarmed . norm from the Golden Gate for the Columbia river and P u g e t Sound." Not a few carried saw mill machinefy in their holds. Muley Sawing By the end of 1853 the popu lation alone the Lower Colum bia and Willamette rivers had increased three fold over the 1849 number. Portland was booming. There were 14 saw mills at work on the shores of Puget Sound, from Bellingham to Tumwater. Four were steam plants. One of these was the Yesler operation around which Seattle grew. Another was that of Pope and Talbot on Gamble Bay now in its 102nd year. Most of the lumber that was dumped from ' the clippers, schooners and barks for the re building of San Francisco in 1853-1855 was a conglomeration of random lengths and widths, shapes and grades, all cut from primitive muley or sash saws, mainly powered by water wheels. ' 'Tapering boards and scant lings, planks with waves that would put the thickness at three inches in the middle and a half Inch at each end, with many rip ples between bulges and tapers, left carpenters fit to be tied. The demand for lumber standards of manufacture that rose from the rebuilding of San Francisco was prolonged. Mississippi valley and Wis consin lumbermen wr,ote a set of grading rules in 1891, and three years later they were re vised and adopted by manufac turers in the white and Norway pines of the Lake States region. The first lumber grade rules publication of the Puget Sound region was an eight-page book let sponsored by the Seattle Lumber, Manufacturers - Ex change in 1902. The main region ( Your Perfect Servant; , - In t's easy JIH STEVENS of American lumber production was then the southern pine re gion but its trend was already- pointing toward the Douglas fir region of Oregon; Washington, northern California and British Columbia. New 'Rule -15' : Lumber is a national product that today streams into 31,000 U.S.A. retail lumber yards from 60,000 sawmills in the nation's comjnercial forest regions. There are about 100 commercial tree species in the United States. Each species has its individual properties and characteristics Through the years these quali ties have been tested in forest products laboratories and in long term use. Herbert Hoover, when Secretary of Commerce, carried through a campaign of product standards, which includ ed the standardization of lum ber sizes. -' Now the West Coast lumber industry, ; through its trade and technical organizations, has started a giant new forward movement in lumber merchan dising -rules and practices that are of - vital concern to consum ers nation-wide. For many years now the great er volume of West Coast lumber production was graded and s61d by number No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4. After March 15, with the publication of new "Rule 15," by the West Coast Lumber In spection bureau, these four grades -will be sold by name: - No. 1 becomes construction. No. 2 becomes standard. No. 3 becomes utility, No. 4 becomes economy. Lumber is to some degree everybody's business in the Pa cific Northwest. You are going to see mbre about' the new look of West Coast' lumber grades in this column. . Get It Right Note it said that the title role in "Salome" was first played here by Mary Garden at the Metropolitan Opera House. That is wrong.. Mary Garden never appeared at the Metropolitan. Olive Fremstead was the first to play "Salome' at the "Met." Olive was very" well endowed with what is referred to as "oomph." She . had more male appeal than Jane Russell, Mari lyn Monroe and Sheree North have together. And, you can add Mamie Van Dor en to that: One critic described Fremstead as she appeared in "Salome" as "a sleek tigress with seduction speaking in every , pose." ' :' Tips . X ;" 'The statement of that 'mani curist that the minimum tip for manicurists should be SI is very amusing,." writes a New Yorker. "Manicurists are notoriously tight and cheap when if is their turn to tip. As a waitress of long experience, I can tell you that the worst tippers are manicur ists, barbers and taxi drivers." Husbands - Excess weight 'shortens life. Of that there is no doubt. Many men are much overweight be cause their wivfe know nothing about diet. That is also why many married1 men suffer unnec essarily from minor ills. A wom an, who really loves her hus band, will make a study of what is good for him to eat, and then see that he eats it.
