Food For the Hungry To the Editor: Half the world k slowly starving, while our government has over 6 billion dollars worth of surplus food in storage. American people are standing helplessly aghast at the heartlessness of this situation, and also over the fact that it is costing our taxpayers more than $700,000 daily for the storage of this food. Why can't we spend, NOW, a portion of that enormous sum, and send this food to needy areas, both at home and abroad? Much less expense would be in volved, and we would be using the strongest weapon possible against Communism the weap on of "Amazing Kindness." Something should be done Im mediately. If every taxpayer would write to Washington, D.C., and make this suggestion to our Secretary of Agriculture and also to our Senators and Repre sentatives, I believe we would get swift action. From the Parable of the Good Samaritan we would conclude that any one In need is our neighbor. We who are longing with un speakable desire to see our be loved country survive the threat of future war are deeply inspired by the words of Jesus, "I was hungry and sick, naked, in pris on and a stranger, and ye took me in. Inasmuch as ye have done It "unto one of the least of these, ye have done it unto me. Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, P. O. Box 1442, Medf ord, pre. Gas Regulation To the Editor: Since you pro fess to be an independent news paper, I hope you will see fit to publicize some of the facts about government regulation of nat ural gas production. a Your editorials and news items on this subject appear generally to favor the socialistic views ex pressed by our "New Deal" pol iticians. C. S. Pope, Rt. 2, Box 435, Medford, Ore. Screens For Ihe Dam To the Editor: A copy of your editorial "Screens for the Dam" published in your Jan. 25 edition was referred to us by our divi sion vice-president, Col. Paul H. Weiland. As you mentioned in this edi torial, the Oregon division of the Izaak Walton League passed a resolution at its 33rd annual con vention relative to the screening of the turbines at the Savage Rapids dam. V e wish to take this opportun ity to commend you and thank you for your very timely edi torial comments,' in support of one of the activities of the Ore gon division. Your support of this particular position is cer tainly a fine contribution to the cause of resource conservation. Allan L. Kelly, Secretary, Oregon Division Izaak Walton League of America, ' ; Portland, Ore. Stand Up To Ivan To the Editor: To ."convince someone against his will who'll be of the same opinion still" is surely a futile and unrewardine task. But the obviously hasty, and critical, letter of Mr. W R. Johnson's in the Feb. 1 M-T contains so much more proof of our people's concern of the Soviet bluff and bluster across the world map that additional comment might help some, for it s worse than foolish to be like sheep who rush to their own destruction when a predator ap pears. We should be ever rirenared and ready to march straight to "the brmk of war" when chal lenged. Like little but coura geous Norwav when Ivan. "scheming mit der brains," in vading .Norway's recognized ter ritorial water, got some 14 "chips" knocked off his shoulder in the way of fishing-boats that include a sizable one of a mother- ship, which are now under Nor wegian guns in Aalesund Fjord, Now this mav trieeer all-out war but mv opinion is otherwise. At least it did not when modern "Ivan The Terrible" in bloody handed Stalin backed off from little Yugoslavia who challenged ! SONOTONE All-Transistor ! HEARING AID WHAT IS IT? In simple terms the Sonotone transistor Hearing Aid is a very small perfectly engineered in strument. It is most economical to operate and easy to wear. The only thing that your friends could possibly notice about it is the marvelous change in your hearing and your entire per sonality. , C. 839 East fl Q Yean 0 -with . Sonorone him at "the brink of war." Stalin lost a lot of face but noth ing like his henchmen, Khrus chev and Bulganin, who recently staged a coyote-grinned baggy pants parade to win the redout able Tito 'back to the Kremlin fold. Had the other now-slave satellite small nations under the Russian heavy yoke displayed the same courage, they would also likely be free and inde pendent people. Don't forget for one moment that the Soviet is watching our every move, even to the letters like Mr. Johnson's and mine, for he must know how bewildered and uncertain we are in order to further his "scheming mit der brains," rather than all-out fighting. For he must remember that little June 17th uprising in East Germany that could spread to fatal proportions if he was engaged all-out otherwise. FDR refused to enter World War II till we were steamed up and united by the Pearl Harbor sneak attack. Napoleon was not defeated by the Russians or Wellington at Waterloo. It was the fading faith of his men and people that halted his world; conquering ambition. F. J. Clifford, 1211 West Main St., Medford, Ore. More About Hospital To the Editor: I, along with hundreds of others in Medford and surrounding areas, wonder why Osteopathic physicians and surgeons are not going to be allowed use of the new hospital? Being that the- large funds donated by Ford Foundation, a thoroughly democratic institu tion, which believes in helping all races, creeds and colors, and as America is supposed to be a country where free enterprise thrives, do you think Henry Ford would like it, if he knew a cer tain click is going to use the fund? I know personally and feel sure many hundreds of people who have and will have Dr. Rutter and his fine staff and hos pital take care of their loved ones know, what a fine doctor he is, and the well run and efficient staff in his hospital can't be duplicated anywhere here. The personal care he and his staff give you is perfect. I fail to find any doctor or hospital that can beat it around here. I work among the public and know their feelings in this thing, as the hospital is supposed to be for good of valley and people therein. Then where does a cer tain click get off, barring their choice of doctors to take patients there. I know Klamath has such a reputation, but I never thought Medford would. I thought people who donate to the hospital would have choice of their personal doc-, tor. I can tell you, there will be mrny more donate if they can use their own doctor. As some of the money, was appropriated by government,, then I feel we should be allowed our choice of doctors, as government is sup posed to be democratic. I don't feel it is fair. I would have been a widow today if it had not been for the immediate care and quick re sponse, when I called of Dr. Rut ter and his wonderful wife. Mrs. Anna Dale, 252 Strawberry lane, Ashland, Ore. Who Is Satan? To the Editor: Many people are perturbed about the evil they see in the world about them. They seek to know the cause They ask, "Why so much sin and crime and war in a world the Creator evidently intended to be a good world?" I don't know all the answers, no one does. But I think I can see some parts of the answer. An important part of the answer to the sin in the world is our human propensity to' shift re sponsibility. We look for some one to blame when things go wrong. So few are willing to stand up and say, "I . am to blame. In the third chapter of Gene sis, the Bible tells of the first sin. It is a story of an attempt to satisfy selfish desire contrary to the will of Grd and unselfish love. When Adam was confront- Medford's Oldest Hearing Aid Institution R. ADAMSON DISTRICT MANAGER Jackson Phone 2-5904 ed with evidence of his sin he quickly said, "The woman gave me to eat." Eve just as quickly added, "The serpent beguiled me." The poor old serpent, un able to find some one else to blame, snuck off into the bush and he has been sneaking ever since. Thus began the human pastime of passing the buck. We may follow the story on through the Bible and through life. Always at the root of sin is the attempt to gratify selfish desire. When the tempter said to Jesus, "Make these stones bread," Jesus rejected the idea. He rejected it not because it is wrong to eat bread to satisfy a legitimate hunger, but He con sidered it wrong to use His divine power to do what human hands and effort are supposed to do. What did Jesus mean by call ing Simon Peter a Satan, Mk. 8:32-33? He did not call Simon Satan. He was speaking to the selfish spirit Simon represented vhen he tried to dissuade Jesus from the way of the cross. Sin, Satan, Selfishness, they all stem from the same root. If you take the selfishness out of a . man you find a saint no matter what nomenclature you apply to the process. As the Holy Spirit is the essence of unselfish love and obedience to God, so Satan, the antithesis of all good, is the essence of. self love and rebellion against God. Who then is Satan but a per sonification of selfishness to the lowest extreme. Sin, Satan, Selfishness, one and the same. You may not agree with me, but 'them's my senti ments. L. G. Weaver, 1453 Poplar Dr., Medford, Ore. Resent Discrimination To the Editor: We were im pressed, but not favorably, by the appeal made by two medical doctors last Tuesday night over KBES-TV for public support, by donations to the Rogue Valley Memorial hospital project. They related how the hospital would be open to everyone and all classes of people; that it would be closed to certain groups, such as osteopathic physicians and surgeons; that to do otherwise would cost the hospital it's recog nition by the American Hospital association, etc. We are wondering how long certain communities, as our own, are going to put up with preju diced and discriminatory tactics because these medical societies refuse to accredit institutions that allow physicians, other than their own societies' mem bers,' to participate in their use. We know that there are a few hospitals in Oregon as well as many more in other states less prejudiced where the two pro fessions share the same commun ity facilities. Beth professions spend the same number of years in their pre-medical and medical train ing, depending on the degree of. specialization desired. The fact that osteopathic doctors of medi cine may have a slightly differ ent or independent approach, should not "outlaw" them.. Con sider the progressive work done by Sister Kenny. According to last June's Ore- gonian, a team of expert medical educators examined the osteo pathic colleges and teaching hospitals, then made a favorable If you're Where you save does make The difference, you'll find, is well worth looking into. No wonder Americans are now putting more of their savings account dollars into insured Savings and Loan Associations than anywhere else ! Investments Made 27 In TKe Day's By FRANK JENKINS As this is written, we have just engaged in ' another diplo matic exchange with Soviet Rus sia. Premier Bulganin proposed to President Eisenhower a year friendship - treaty whose first article reads: "The contracting parties (meaninsr the U.S. and Russia) will develoD and strengthen, in the spirit of sincere cooperation and mutual understanding, friendly relations between the DeoDles of the Soviet Union and the United States of America on the basis of equal rights, mutual respect for state sovereignty and non-interference in internal af fairs." In addition, the treaty pro nosed that the United State and Russia agree, in conformity with the charter of the United .Na tions, "to settle all their inter national disputes by peaceful means" and to contribute to. the development and strengthening of economic, cultural and scien tific cooperation between the two states on the basis of the princi ple of mutual benefit and equal rights." ALL THIS was put on paper and delivered to the Presi dent of the United States with a perfectly straight face by the rulers of the Soviet Union de spite the fact, that for ten years all these. things have been pro. vided by the Charter of the United Nations, which was sign ed by both the United States and Russia, and during all these years of cold war Russia has been VIOLATING THEM! . Can you beat it? TO ALL of this, President Eis enhower replied that "a stroke of the pen cannot bring peace." He asked bluntly . how there can be hope for peace through words, when the SPIRIT has not changed. He reiterated: "We know that it is DEEDS and not WORDS ALONE which count." He added: "Since Geneva the world situation has deteriorated report to the AMA hierarchy, suggesting closer cooperation be tween the two professions. But the politicians of the ruling body, by a close vote, vetoed the recommendations of its own edu cators and examiners, and as sumed, again the attitude of "whole hog or none." We main tain that if such an attitude must prevail here in the Rogue Val ley's "public" hospitals, and if medical societies rather than our local citizens are to dictate the policies that must be followed, then why not make the medical societies build and finance their own hospitals, just as they have made the osteopathic physicians do for years? Then, let us use the truly public hospitals for all the people, and staffed by all the doctors limited only by their state practice rights. We agree that a better , hos pital is imperative. We agree that the ' public should support such a project. But we deplore a policy which calls on the public to build a work shop for just one politically - powerful group of doctors under the- guise of an "all-community" benefit. Loyd C. Morrow, Box 355, Rogue River and 19 others. saving for their college by the 10th of February Earn FIRST FEDERAL Savings & Loan Assn. of Medford North Holly R. F. Kyle, News further because to us it has seemed that your government had, in various areas of the world, embarked upon a course which increases tensions by in tensifying hatreds and animosi ties implicit in historic interna tional disputes." TKE THEN declined to accept the proposed "treaty of friend ship (when the ', Communist rulers have made it crystal, clear by their actions that there IS NO FRIENDSHIP and isn't going to be any friendship so far as they are concerned) because accept ance of such a proposal might work against peace by creating a false illusion of accord. So that's that. Personally, it seems to me that in this latest international sparring exhibition we came out ahead. SPECIALLY so since Presi dent Eisenhower's rejection of this latest Communist offer of sucker bait was phrased in words of the gravest and most thought ful courtesy. ' - He spoke softly, but made it. plain that we carry a big stick which we shall not be afraid to use in defense of right and de cency and international fair deal ing. tyHAT were the Russians up to this time? I wouldn't know But I suppose they were offer ing us this phony "treaty of friendship" ' to see if we would be saps enough to accept it. If we had accepted it, I'm sure they would have said to themselves: "Aha! These Americans are SCARED OF US. Being scared of us, they're still willing to AP PEASE us. "We've got 'em on the run!" IF THE Communists ever be come convinced that we're scared of them, LOOK OUT! The next thing will be bombs on our cities. To Call Bids Soon On Shopping Center .
