Med Treasure "3 (m ... - Carvings of Hardwood By Skilled Artists ".As a general rule it is. wise to buy any piece of wood carv ing that is offered at a low price, especially if the wood is hard and heavy. A good part of the reason is. that ususally only skillfull art ists work in such material and therefore the workmanship tends to be good no matter how trite the subject matter may be. Such a combination means a greater likelihood of a good ; price, particularly if the piece is shown to a sizable number of people. -.. Last year the widow of a friend of mine decided to sell the greater part of her furnish-, ings before moving into smaller quarters. Among the' pieces was a teak statue of a sixteenth cent ury Spanish soldier -leaning on a pike. It was a well executed piece of work, but nothing really extraordinary, quite typical, in STATES TOOK MEASURES TO Stamp collectors, owe some thing of a debt to a choice col lection of characters including such pleasant people as "Baby Face" Nelson, Dillinger and various other prominent hoods of the Middle West at the end of the roaring twenties. The reason is that by 1929 losses in post office robberies and burglaries in that section of the country- especially Kansas and Nebraska had reached such proportions that the post office department' felt it had better take fast action on its own rath er than continue to rely ex clusively on the FBI and local police. The type of action taken was protective, of courser designed simply to cut losses, not to cap ture criminals. ' , It consisted of overprinting the abbreviations "Kans." and "Nebr." on regular stamps , of the 1926-1927 series. N The theory was that any crim-. inal who made off with sub stantial ' quantities - of those' stamps would be unable to dis pose of them in any other state. The stamps would be good any where in the country, but if a' . VALUE OF CHAIR OBSCURED "r No matter how often I looked fat it, the chair seemed to bev nothing other than a Victorian atrocity. It was- the horns that did it. I am positive of that. They dominated the piece not only physically but spiritually, too, if you can imagine , such . a thing about a piece of other : wise inanimate furniture. The horns were rather, small ones as those of Texas longhorns go. Just a little, over six . feet from tip to tip, not . quite half 'the -length of the biggest, ones on record. But they had been reshaped a process ol soaking and heating so that in place of the multiple curves they " now had only one, a graceful arc sweeping out and away from the back of the chair to end three or four inches beyond the . front edge of .the seat. But though most people who saw the chair priced at $65, by the way saw primarily "the horns, it wasn't so with Charles, a long-standing acquaintance of mine. He paid as much attention, to the feet and the rest of the piece. More, in fact, so much' I have felt he was putting on 21 -FOR SALE, MISCELLANEOUS , " WESTINGHOUSE RANGE T Automatic, With Clock, Minute. Timer Lamp and Storage. " ' ' I , recalled the piece immed iately on seeing it. I had been with her husband when he had found it some ten years before. He had1 come across it as it lay under a table in a salvage shop, and even though the head of the pike had been broken off, he had been glad to pay $7.50 for the piece which stood under three, feet high. , - ', When auctioned, the piece went quickly with three people bidding it up to a price of $120 and the auctioneer even then complaining that the buyer was getting too much of a bargain. But. only last month I came across the piece again. This time it was pictured in a catalogue, and the price at which the deal er had listed it had gone up again to $275. HAMPER STAMP THIEVES business house in Chicago or New York suddenly, began to use large ' quantities . of stamps with a Kansah or Nebraskan overprint, it would, be quickly evident .' that the stamps had been bought . at a discount as stolen goods. The idea proved to be aston ishingly successful insofar as the theft of stamps was concerned, It had to be an extremely dumb thief not to appreciate the po tentialities of the situation, and most " of them switched their attention to currency exclusively with the result that though the post office gained, the banks suffered. In any event, it was unnecessary for- the government to repeat the overprinting the next year.- ' . . The effect . for collectors is that, any stamp .of the series there are 11 up to the 10 cent denomination has a substantial premium. - ' Most valuable is . a pair of 3-ce.nt,. violet stamps, one of them: overprinted "Kans." or "Nebr."- and the other" plain. It is - catalogued at $100 unused. Cancelled,- it would be worth much more. BY STEER HORN ADORNMENT an act if I hadn't.: known him better and if he hadn't bought it. That, of course, was the pay off. Charles never buys ; any thing ". unless he, is absolutely certain his money's worth. He had seen something in the chair the rest of us hadn't seen. "This is an old corner chair," he said when I asked why he had bought it. "Just try to pic ture it without those horns, with the graceful arms; it originally had. From the positioning of the four legs with their ball and claw feet you can see it was meant to sit right in a corner. "It was probably made in the latter part of the 1700's, and it certainly wasn't made to go with the horns.. Obviously it was al ready old when they were put on." I could see . he was going to remove the horns and restore the piece. He felt he could get maybe $400 or. $500 for it. But the job never got done. Someone liked the horns on it ' and paid him $300 for the, piece as it was. , (Released by McClue Newspaper Syndicate) ' 21-FOR SALE, MISCELLANEOUS W ATKINS products. Ph. 3-3381. 300 chick size.
